The Role

HOST seeks a qualified solicitor to establish and lead its internal legal function. The role requires expertise in UK contract and charity law, applied in an international nonprofit context. The primary jurisdiction will be England and Wales; however, given HOST’s global operations, familiarity with or awareness of the legal systems in the Netherlands, Singapore, and India would be advantageous. You will support hosting, grantmaking, partner support, and global operations, ensuring contracts, due diligence, and legal frameworks are robust, proportionate, and operationally effective.

This role combines hands-on legal review with systems design, risk oversight, and practical guidance for non-legal teams, working closely with the Executive Director and Operations leadership. As this is a newly created position, the scope and priorities of the role will naturally evolve over time in discussion with the Legal Circle. We recognise that establishing effective legal processes, procedures, and documentation will take time, and we value a thoughtful, iterative approach to building the function well.

This is a part-time role (approximately [2–3 days per week / 0.4–0.6 FTE], to be agreed).

Experience working in-house, and experience operating primarily in a remote working environment, would be an advantage.

Key Responsibilities

Legal Oversight & Contracts
Review and approve agreements and maintain standard templates.
Provide clear, practical risk-based advice to internal stakeholders.
Manage legal requests through a structured, auditable intake process.
Engage and liaise with external law firms where specialist advice or jurisdictional expertise is required, managing those relationships appropriately.

Due Diligence & Risk
Assess higher-risk matters (e.g. sanctions, safeguarding, governance, employment, data protection).
Align legal processes with Finance and Operations.
Maintain clear and proportionate risk records.

Legal Systems & Governance
Develop and maintain key policies and template documents.
Embed appropriate legal workflows across the organisation.
Support governance and compliance improvements.

Scope

Will Do:
Lead legal review, maintain templates and policies, deliver accessible legal guidance, oversee a structured and transparent legal workflow, and coordinate external legal support where appropriate.

Will Not Do:
Lead commercial negotiations, manage operational delivery, approve retrospective decisions, or act outside the legal remit of the role.

Support & Resources

You will have access to appropriate online legal research tools and resources, subject to discussion regarding organisational needs and associated costs.

HOST will support Continuing Professional Development (CPD), with scope and funding agreed based on identified needs and budget.

HOST will cover the cost of the annual practising certificate (currently approximately £300–£400 per year).

About You

Requirements:
Practising solicitor in England & Wales, authorised to work in-house.

Skills:
Strong grounding in UK contract and charity law.
Experience drafting and interpreting agreements.
Ability to communicate legal advice clearly and pragmatically to non-legal colleagues.

Desirable:
Experience in data protection, employment law, sanctions, international law, or risk and compliance frameworks.
Previous in-house experience.
Experience working effectively in remote-first or distributed organisations.

Interim Chief Executive Officer – North Surrey Domestic Abuse Service (NSDAS)

Location: Elmbridge, Epsom & Ewell and Spelthorne (hybrid; 2 days per week on-site presence

About North Surrey Domestic Abuse Service (NSDAS)

NSDAS is a specialist, survivor-centred charity formed as an independent Charitable Incorporated Organisation in 2024 following a period hosted by Citizens Advice. We provide confidential practical and emotional support to adults and children affected by domestic abuse across Elmbridge, Epsom & Ewell and Spelthorne, delivering helpline and email advice, advocacy, safety planning, refuge and housing pathways, recovery programmes and targeted work for children and young people. Our practice is trauma-informed and feminist in outlook, foregrounding safety, confidentiality and the lived experience of survivors.

We are a small, specialist organisation with an average headcount of around 18 (approximately 15 frontline staff and three support roles), supported by a committed cohort of volunteers. Since independence our trustees have prioritised governance, compliance and capacity building; in our first independently reported year total income was c.£932k and trustees view the near-term financial position as stable while planning prudently for the medium term. This interim appointment offers the chance to lead NSDAS through consolidation and prepare the charity for its next strategic phase.

As our next Interim Chief Executive Officer, you will:

• Strategy & Impact: Develop and deliver a clear 12-month operational plan, with pragmatic milestones and measurable outcomes that align with trustee priorities and service needs.

• Governance & Finance: Strengthen governance and risk reporting to the Board, maintain oversight of day-to-day financial control and cashflow, and support the Treasurer in preparing budgets and regular management reports.

• Operational Leadership: Provide stable, visible leadership and day-to-day operational management, ensuring continuity and quality of frontline services.

• Income Generation: Lead practical income-generation activity alongside trustees and fundraising staff, identify suitable funding opportunities and support bid development to diversify income and build unrestricted reserves.

• Service Quality & Safeguarding: Ensure survivor-centred practice, robust case recording, up-to-date safeguarding and lone-working protocols, and quality assurance across services.

• People & Wellbeing: Prioritise staff and volunteer wellbeing by embedding clinical supervision, promoting psychological safety and improving supervision and development arrangements.

• Community & Partnerships: Maintain and build constructive relationships with statutory partners (local authorities, police), Surrey Domestic Abuse Partnership members and other key stakeholders; represent NSDAS at multi-agency forums.

• Brand & Profile: Advocate for local service needs, raise NSDAS’s profile within the local ecosystem and support trustee work to communicate impact and local value.

Who you are

• A seasoned senior leader with proven executive experience in a small to medium-sized charity or comparable organisation (c.8–20 staff; turnover circa £0.5m+).

• Demonstrable experience of leading organisations through change or transition while maintaining service continuity.

• Strong people leadership skills with experience managing sensitive HR matters, staff wellbeing and clinical/therapeutic supervision arrangements.

• A track record of successful income generation and relationship management with funders, commissioners and statutory partners.

• Financially competent with experience of budgetary control, reading management accounts and reporting to trustees.

• Excellent communicator, credible at both operational detail and strategic discussion, with highly developed stakeholder engagement skills.

• Knowledge of domestic abuse and trauma-informed approaches is essential (practical experience in the VAWG sector strongly preferred).

• Commitment to equality, diversity and survivor-centred practice and the ability to travel across the boroughs and work flexibly.

About the role

The Senior Business & Resource Planning Manager is a role within Philanthropy & Alumni Engagement, acting as a strategic partner to colleagues and driving key processes and activity in areas such as planning, reporting, project management and operational improvements.  

The postholder will support on operationalising plans and lead on the in-year tracking and management of budgets across P&A, and play a key role in supporting the P&A Leadership Team (LT) in making informed decisions relating to the resourcing of staffing and activity.

This role will also lead and coordinate on key aspects of reporting including internal quarterly reviews and also key accountability sessions for P&A with University leadership. Alongside this, they will lead on strategic projects that align and have been identified as being important to progress P&A and wider institutional goals. 

The role is based within the Advancement Operations section of P&A and will be part of the section leadership team. The postholder will be closely involved in taking forward projects to review and enhance processes to drive improvements and streamlining across Advancement Operations. This area of activity will also link to the postholder’s focus on supporting the Director of Advancement Operations in delivering their agenda. 

This is a full time (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract. 

P&A has a hybrid working approach, with a minimum of 40% of time in the office. Typically, this equates to two days per week, but we’re very happy for colleagues to be in more frequently if they so wish.

About You
