The main purpose of the role is to prepare individuals to move on to independent living in the community. Service users may step down from the intensive support service to high, medium or lower needs before moving into the community.

From the outset of an individual's tenancy the focus of the support is on preparing them for their journey of recovery and independence over an agreed period. Our support service is provided 24 hours a day 365 days per year with tailored flexible support delivered in accordance with need. ​

You will have sound knowledge of mental health legislation, including CPA processes, and be skilled in crisis management, communication, and providing dignified, person-centred support. A good awareness of health and safety and safeguarding is essential, as is the ability to work flexibly across early and late shifts, weekends, and bank holidays to meet 24-hour service needs. You will also bring strong IT, literacy, and numeracy skills, with the ability to produce clear written correspondence and maintain accurate records.

Finance Assistant & Receptionist

The role at a glance

• Hours: 15 hours per week, split as:
  • Finance Assistant – 7.5 hours/week (flexible across the week, ideally Tuesday and/or Wednesday; not the reception day)
  • Receptionist – 7.5 hours/week (one day, ideally Friday)

What you’ll be doing

Finance (7.5 hrs/week)

• Enter invoices and payments accurately in Xero, analyse by department and fund
• Keep records spotless: scan and upload documents, reconcile petty cash monthly
• Prepare cash allowances for a small number of service users
• Process staff/trustee expenses and occasional card payments
• Record and bank cash/cheques, file everything properly, draft fee invoices

Reception (1 day/week, ideally Friday)

• Be the first warm welcome: phones, door, inbox - logging enquiries and passing to the right person
• Keep the reception and shared spaces tidy and friendly
• Sort and distribute post (and take mail to the Post Office, including special deliveries)
• Support small admin tasks, make external calls, and help keep the office running (incl. lights/CCTV on/off)
• Top up staff refreshments (small things, big impact!)

Our aim is to reduce distress, help people feel heard, and support them to regain stability in the moment.

Caseworker - Sexual Violence

Location: Aylesbury (Hybrid)

Role Description

To provide holistic support to anyone who has experienced sexual violence and to identify and engage with these individuals on a one-to-one basis, enabling them to access services and make positive, empowering choices. 

Responsibilities:

• To provide support to service users who have experienced sexual violence.
• To provide support to the facilitation of group work within the service.
• To provide group work interventions on a 1-2-1 basis where the service user is unable to access groups.
• To lead on providing service users information sessions and informal group activities / events.
• To independently manage a small caseload of adult client cases, providing practical and emotional support.
• To conduct risk assessments, do case management and safety planning in partnership with other key agencies.
• To advocate in a range of settings on behalf of the service user and working towards them being their own best advocate.
• To help service users to make informed choices about their future options.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Essential:

• Experience of direct support work with victims or other vulnerable people including providing emotional and practical support.
• Excellent Caseworker with good assessment, motivational and empowerment skills.
• Organising, prioritising, risk management and problem-solving skills.
• Experience of working cooperatively and effectively in a team.
• Willingness to be able to work flexible hours when necessary and be part of an on-call rota.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including presentation skills.
• PC literate (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Compassionate towards the individuals the service supports.
• A driving licence and own transport.
• Sensitivity to cultural differences and the ability to work in diverse settings and with people with diverse needs.
• Good knowledge of a full range of civil, criminal and practical options available to service users.
• Good knowledge of restorative interventions or ability to learn them and make use of them with appropriate service users.

• A clear understanding of the gendered nature of some crime types, and a clear understanding of how different crime types disproportionately affect different groups of people.

Desirable:

• Ability to determine strategies, outcomes and opportunities to develop the role.

Role

You will provide pro–active emotional, practical and advocacy support for male and non-binary survivors who have experienced any form of sexual violence and are engaging (or considering engaging) with the criminal justice system. 

Our ISVAs work with clients currently residing in any London borough, or if the abuse was committed in any London borough. Some travel to London will be expected.

An ISVA qualification or relevant degree is desirable, but not essential. We consider people from a wide range of educational backgrounds and work experience. What matters is that you are empathetic and will support the specific needs of our clients.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with a professional telephone manner to join us as Tele-Fundraising Intern. You will help promote Shelter and enhance our ability to retain our supporters. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key part in standing up to the housing emergency.

About the role

You will be the first point of contact for supporters seeking information about Shelter’s work, so will need excellent communication and administrative skills, a real interest in housing issues, as well as an understanding of how the Outbound Supporter Services Team impacts supporter retention. Your day to day work will include calling supporters to welcome them to the organisation and thank them for choosing to support us, undertaking quality control surveys and ensuring supporter data is accurate.

You will promote Shelter, raise awareness of housing and homelessness issues and enhance our ability to retain our supporters. You will respond to enquiries about Shelter’s work and action supporter requests. You will maintain accurate supporter records and liaise with other departments to ensure changes are actioned, as well as handling complaints about services and fundraising activity.

There will be on the job training, support and supervision and you will have access to Shelter’s Employee Assistance Programme. We can also offer flexible hours, with some office working.

About you

The role is open to anyone who has have lived experience of disadvantage, such as homelessness, housing issues, the criminal justice system, mental ill-health, money and debt issues or other disadvantages. You will have good customer service skills, are able to communicate effectively on the telephone and have good attention to detail, with the ability to capture data accurately. You also have an understanding of Microsoft Office applications.

Our services provide 24‑hour supported housing for young people aged 16–25, offering high‑level, medium‑level and transitional housing options. We take a trauma‑informed and psychologically informed approach, supporting residents to build essential life skills, identify personal goals, and work towards their aspirations, enabling them to move on to fully independent living.

What you will be doing

In this mobile role, you will travel between supported housing sites across Crawley and Horsham throughout the night, ensuring each service remains safe, secure and welcoming. You will carry out routine checks of unstaffed properties—including communal areas, gardens and external spaces—to ensure they are quiet, well‑maintained and compliant with health and safety standards.

You will provide responsive assistance to residents who may need help, and act quickly when concerns arise. You will respond to calls from the on‑call manager and attend sites where an incident, accident or potential risk has been reported, completing thorough checks and taking appropriate action.

When required, you will work alongside the on‑site Night Workers at Crawley Foyer and Horsham Y Centre, helping to maintain a safe and secure environment. This will include monitoring CCTV, completing building checks and keeping accurate records of night‑time activity. You will also take a proactive approach to preventing anti‑social behaviour, work closely with support staff, and carry out one‑to‑one interventions with young people who may be experiencing a mental health crisis or require medical assistance.

This role involves lone working, so you will need to be confident in decision‑making and in following procedures. However, before joining the rota, you will have the opportunity to get to know the team and services, take part in a full induction, complete the required training, and undertake shadow shifts to ensure you feel confident, supported, and well prepared.

Main purpose of the role
