Role

Sexual violence in prisons has long been ignored, leaving men without adequate support. Over the past year we have been part of a committee with HM Prison Service, Metropolitan Police and NHS England to create a Service on responding to serious sexual assaults within prisons in London. We want to raise awareness amongst prison staff of the appropriate responses to sexual violence and gather information about the needs of male survivors in prison to inform future service provision.

The Work Rights Centre is looking for a motivated employment law expert to  lead  our growing training programme, and support the wider development of the charity.

Role Overview

Our Location

Payroll is outsourced, but this role is very much hands-on. You’ll be the expert voice in the room, the bridge between People & Culture, Finance, and our payroll provider, and the lead on shaping better, smarter systems for the future.

What you’ll be doing

• Owning the end-to-end payroll process, ensuring accuracy, timelines, and full UK statutory compliance

• Acting as the internal payroll specialist, confidently reviewing calculations, deductions, pensions, and statutory payments

• Managing payroll inputs for variable hours and timesheet-based staff

• Building a strong, effective relationship with our outsourced payroll provider and holding service standards high

• Spotting risks, fixing inefficiencies, and reducing manual workarounds through better processes and cleaner data

• Acting as system owner post-implementation, ensuring controls, optimisation, and user confidence

• Producing meaningful payroll and people data reports that support financial planning and decision-making

• Working closely with People Operations, Finance, and managers to make sure changes are processed smoothly and on time

You’ll bring:

• Strong, practical UK payroll expertise and a forensic eye for detail

• Experience managing payroll across multiple employment types and variable pay

• Confidence working with outsourced payroll providers and challenging when things aren’t right

• A track record of improving payroll or HR systems and documenting clear, resilient processes

• Experience leading or supporting HR/payroll system implementations

• The ability to explain payroll and systems clearly to non-specialists

• A collaborative, calm approach, even when deadlines loom

Right now, we are looking for a Volunteer Coordinator - Mental Health to play a pivotal role in our Volunteering Service in London

Sounds great, what will I be doing?

As a Volunteer Coordinator with Hestia's vibrant and supportive Volunteering Team, you'll play a key part in creating meaningful opportunities that empower individuals and strengthen our communities. You'll recruit, train, and inspire volunteers who work alongside people experiencing severe mental health challenges across our drop‑in community and crisis services. With collaboration, creativity, and empowerment at the heart of everything we do, you'll shape safe, inclusive, and uplifting environments that help individuals build confidence, improve wellbeing, and reduce social isolation. Working closely with colleagues across Hestia, you'll ensure volunteers feel valued, and service users receive tailored support, and every project delivers real impact.

In this role, you'll take a proactive lead in shaping high‑quality volunteer involvement across our mental health services. Working closely with the Area Manager, Service Managers, NHS Trust partners and Experts by Experience, you'll identify emerging needs and design volunteer roles that genuinely enhance clinical and support pathways. You'll champion a whole‑person approach supporting physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing, while inspiring staff teams to think creatively about how volunteers can add meaningful value. From recruiting and training volunteers to delivering befriending and activity programmes, to supervising their day‑to‑day involvement, you'll ensure every volunteer feels confident, supported and aligned with service priorities. You'll build strong relationships across Hestia, particularly within our crisis alternative services, and offer expert guidance to colleagues to ensure best practice. With responsibility for maintaining accurate records and contributing to the smooth running of the Volunteering Programme, you'll play a vital role in ensuring our services remain responsive, compassionate and impactful. What do I need to bring with me?

You'll need to be able to demonstrate the core skills this role requires as well as match our values and mission. You don't have to tick all the boxes right away; the important thing is that you're willing to learn. This role calls for someone with exceptional organisational and project‑management abilities, capable of guiding and empowering volunteers, colleagues and service users with professionalism, warmth and confidence; someone who brings strong interpersonal skills, the ability to build trusting relationships across diverse communities and partner organisations, and a sensitive awareness of the cultural, social and health issues affecting people who use our mental health services. You'll need solid IT proficiency across Microsoft Office, strong literacy and numeracy, a thoughtful approach to evaluation, and a clear understanding of safeguarding principles, along with the confidence to address concerns appropriately. While experience supervising volunteers is an advantage, what truly matters is your ability to engage people in a friendly, supportive manner and create an environment where volunteers feel valued, informed and able to thrive.

This is a hybrid role with three days spent on site across our London services, including regular visits to our Aldgate head office, and two days worked remotely each week.
