The Task Ahead: Finance Manager
As The Difference moves from its early start-up phase into the delivery of our 2025-30 strategy, our programmes and sector-influencing work are expanding to reach more schools and to deepen our impact. Alongside this growth, our team - and the operational function which supports them - is also growing.
As Finance Manager, you will be a key member of the Finance & Operations team. You will hold end-to-end responsibility for the finance function, from reconciliations to budgeting. You will decide where and how our existing processes could be improved, as well as developing new systems that will underpin our work as a larger and more established charity. You will be supported by the Director of People, Finance & Operations, as well as our external auditors.
The Difference is still a small and growing charity. This means that our work is fast-paced, our roles are broad, and there is a culture of being reactive and flexible, as the needs of the organisation evolve. Areas of Responsibility
The Difference is looking for a Finance Manager to lead our finance function in the following ways:

Oversee our internal bookkeeping, payment, and accounting processes, and improve these systems ongoingly.

Lead on budgeting and forecasting across the organisation, supporting teams to predict income and expenditure and make sound financial decisions.

Lead on the production of management accounting information, including internal monthly management accounts, quarterly reports for Trustees, and financial reports for investors.

Lead on The Difference’s audit process, with external auditors.

Work with the Development & Impact Manager to update fundraising pipelines, and ensure the availability of high quality income projections for Trustees.

Support accurate budgeting and reporting for grant funding, including tracking spend of restricted funds.

Support business planning by working with teams to model potential future work - e.g. costs of expansion of an existing programme; modelling potential new programmes.

Why Work for The Difference?
Schooling isn’t working for the children who need it most. Every week in England 109 children – equivalent to three full classrooms – are permanently excluded. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Since the pandemic, school suspensions have risen significantly, as has persistent absenteeism. 1 in 5 children are missing more than 10% of their time in school. Children who are excluded or persistently absent are much more likely to already be experiencing vulnerability or disadvantage. They are more likely to live in poverty, have additional learning needs, suffer mental health challenges, or experience a lack of safety outside school. Certain ethnicities are also disproportionately affected, notably Gypsy Roma Traveller and black Caribbean children.
Exclusion and high rates of absence can have a dramatic effect on life chances. These young people are more likely to drop out of education or employment, become vulnerable to long-term mental ill health, or be at risk of criminal exploitation. The Difference believes that children and young people deserve better and that the education system has to change.
Our Organisation
The Difference is a young education charity, founded to change the story on lost learning. By 2030, we want rates of exclusion and absence to be falling nationally and for schools to be better equipped to support all children, including those who may be vulnerable. The Difference was born out of a year of research into school exclusions with think-tank IPPR. This research identified a lack of inclusion expertise in schools and proposed a new leadership development programme to fill this gap. In 2018, Difference founder Kiran hired the team who took this idea from concept to reality, beginning work with our first schools.
The Difference is now a 22-strong team delivering multiple school leadership programmes, alongside a growing research and policy arm. The team is supported by our Youth Advisory Board, made up of young people who have experienced exclusion and who provide their expertise and insights on how school inclusion work should be done. This work is needed more than ever. Effects of COVID-19, coupled with the spiralling cost of living, have substantially increased levels of vulnerability. Schools serving excluded pupils face under-funding. The Difference has had excellent early impact but there is work ahead to capture this, share learning with schools and policy-makers, and grow our capacity to lower exclusions across England.

In the role, you’ll be:
- You’ll be building relationships with a wide range of individuals, community supporters, networks and local groups to fundraise and build awareness of Stonewall Housing’s mission, with a particular focus on Birmingham-based individuals and organisations.
- Working with the Development Officer and Community and Events Fundraising Specialist on community fundraiser stewardship, where you’ll be providing support to individuals and groups fundraising for Stonewall Housing through their own events or running and challenge activities.

Rowan Alba works to end homelessness in Edinburgh by providing permanent supported homes and building relationships with individuals in crisis. We also work in our communities with volunteers who provide vital support to the most vulnerable in an attempt to prevent homelessness. We are seeking an enthusiastic and confident communicator for the new role of Corporate and Community Fundraising Manager to increase awareness of our work and develop new funding streams from individual, community and corporate partnerships.

Role Purpose
The purpose of the Fundraiser role is primarily to raise funds from UK trusts, foundations and statutory funders and to identify, generate, grow and maintain this vital income stream. Some engagement to support other strands of fundraising will be required.
Context
The post-holder will work to the Chief Financial Officer and closely with the Chief Operating Officer and other managers of Cathedral teams. Southwark Cathedral has been a place of Christian worship for over 1400 years. Now it stands on the vibrant and exciting regenerated south bank of the Thames surrounded by cultural venues such as Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe and Borough Market, the offices of major companies as well as schools and diverse residential communities. The Cathedral’s mission, ministry and musical tradition are core to its life as a Cathedral and a parish church serving the community. It also relies on the valuable financial contribution made by its income generating activities such as its shop, café, conference rooms, corporate events and concerts. It is a very busy place, attracting 200,000 visitors a year to the Cathedral, its churchyard, shop and café. The Cathedral relies on a small but dedicated team to be inclusive and welcoming to all. Job Description
Job Title: Fundraiser (Grants and Trusts)
Reports to: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Salary: £38,000-£40,000 per annum

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Research and Identification of Funders
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of our research projects and research funding plans, including in response to requests from Heads of Department and Senior Management Team;
- Research, identify and prioritise potential grants, personal & institutional trusts and statutory funders and funding opportunities, including keeping up to date with new fundraising opportunities in the faith and heritage sectors and in London;
- Undertake research on funders and grant making bodies to assess their potential for funding opportunities;
- Gather information and budgetary information from cathedral colleagues as required by potential funders;
- Develop and write high quality, compelling fundraising proposals and applications which communicate Southwark Cathedral’s funding needs clearly and concisely;
- Work with the Marketing & Communications Manager to develop a compelling case for support documents and other donor materials to attract support for our research projects;
- Develop and maintain a pipeline of applications to trusts & foundations.
Fundraising
- Secure funding from UK trusts, foundations and statutory funding bodies to meet Budgetary targets and support proposed future projects at the Cathedral;
- Support the implementation of a trusts and foundations programme, with a view to increasing funding for flagship projects alongside core unrestricted funding;
- Assist with the organisation of fundraising events as required;
- Ensure approaches to trusts and other donors are streamlined and targeted.
Contact and Liaison
- Manage the Cathedral’s donor records including gift aid declarations, personal information and legacy pledges and other non-financial information provided by donors - adhering to data protection best practice at all times;
- Liaise with the Marketing & Communications Manager to analyse the existing donor communications and suggest improved methods of engagement;
- Liaise with the Marketing & Communications Manager to arrange for the creation and maintenance of pages on the Cathedral website that highlight the fundraising activity and communicate successes achieved;
- Act as the primary point of contact for all existing and potential trust and grants funders, directing enquiries as appropriate;
- Develop a network of strong relationships with existing and prospective grant, trust and statutory funders;
- Organise meetings and events for prospective supporters and provide briefings for colleagues.
Information Management, Monitoring and Evaluation
- Maintain the Cathedral’s fundraising database, ensuring all records are updated and maintained correctly in accordance with the Cathedral’s data protection policy;
- Manage the reporting, recording and administration progress of existing grants, advising relevant members of the team well in advance of reporting deadlines;
- Work with others to develop and implement effective evaluation, monitoring and reporting processes for funders, and ensure reporting requirements are fulfilled and activities remain outcome and impact focused;
- Manage and maintain records and monitor progress of applications and relationships, including working to agreed KPIs;
- Prepare regular progress reports on fundraising and activities for SMT and the Chapter as required;
- Use the Cathedral’s fundraising database to analyse the success rates to support fundraising strategy and individual projects;
- Work with the Finance team to ensure that all funding is quickly and correctly processed and acknowledged and that financial reports are available in the appropriate format;
- Work with the Governance & Committees Manager and Finance Team to support reporting requirements and compliance with the relevant legislation and codes of conduct;
- Work with the COO and Marketing & Communications Manager to create appropriate evaluation and legacy documentation.
Other
- Manage the relevant administration that accompanies this role, including booking meetings and taking minutes as required;
- Play an active role as a member of the Cathedral team, supporting each other as required;
- Be an ambassador for the Cathedral and assist the Fundraising Advisory Panel in developing positive relationships with the Cathedral’s key stakeholders.

Knowledge/Experience

Terms and Conditions
Working Hours
The working hours shall be 35 hours per week (exclusive of meal breaks). Some out of hours working will be required to support meetings and events and this will be notified in advance. Time off in lieu will be awarded in line with Southwark Cathedral’s policy.
Annual Leave
25 days per annum as well as statutory bank holidays, with an additional 5 days (pro-rata) after 10 years service.
Probation
The appointment is subject to the satisfactory completion of a six-month probationary period.
Season Ticket Loan
Once the probationary period has been completed satisfactorily, the person appointed will be eligible to take out a season ticket loan.
Pension

Role Particulars
Working Pattern: Full time working hours, including weekly in-person team meetings in London: monthly all-staff meetings on Tuesdays twice a month, and weekly on Wednesdays twice a month. Job Title: Alumni and fundraising development officer

Salary: NJC scale point 14 – 17. Actual Salary: £23,615 – 24,856 (FTE: £27,334 – 28,770)
Purpose of Job:
The postholder plays a key role in managing the alumni network, with a specific emphasis on events and volunteer management, to actively engage alumni and stakeholders with Queen Mary’s Grammar School. The goal is to continuously enhance the value and contributions from stakeholders in alignment with Queen Mary’s Grammar School’s strategic priorities.
Ultimately, this role is designed to support the school’s strategic plan by delivering philanthropic income and other forms of financial and non-financial support from alumni and other stakeholders. This is achieved by developing and strengthening relationships with important constituents and identifying shared areas of interest and activities to enable lifelong relationships to form.
Main responsibilities:

To work with the Headmaster in developing links with the alumni network through the Queen Mary’s Club (QMC) for the purpose of school promotion, school career programme development and fundraising.

To assist with other whole school fundraising projects
-
To oversee the financial and administrative function of school donations and the Queen Mary’s Association (QMA) as a parental fundraising body within the school.
It is expected that the role will be self-funding, as a result of the income brought into the school. This may include funds raised through alumni, grant applications and bequests from former pupils, as well as a contribution towards other fundraising projects.
JOB DESCRIPTION The duties include:

Actively enhance engagement opportunities with former students and other stakeholders. Contribute to development of methods of engaging with alumni and strengthening their relationship with Queen Mary’s Grammar School and each other;

Maintenance and continuity of QMC database using Raiser’s Edge; leading initiatives to grow and populate the database.

Management of the website, including creating new content;
-
Use a range of social media channels to engage alumni and other relevant stakeholders, such as Linked-in and Mail Chimp.
-
Recruitment of upper sixth students to the QMC; Actively contribute to engagement with current students to raise the profile of the QMC and the opportunities afforded by Queen Mary’s alumni network.

Assistance with fundraising for specific projects; putting in bids for funds and making Gift Aid claims where appropriate; creating new initiatives for fund raising and bequests.

Stewardship, retention and recognition of volunteers and donors, ensuring they have a rewarding and impactful experience.

Liaison with Old Marians, including a quarterly digital ‘From All Quarters’ update newsletter, creation of regular email campaigns, preparation of the annual Chairman’s letter and other social media/website updates;

Researching the School’s Archives for materials to assist in fundraising, events and content creation;

Management of QMC merchandise, including sales and stock replenishment

Organisation and set up of the Old Marians’ dinner in September of each year (including liaison with the guest speaker, caterers and QMA bar committee);

Organisation of the annual July Wreath Laying ceremony in London and surrounding activities.

Organisation of alumni gatherings in Walsall, Birmingham, London and any ad-hoc events as required.

Liaison with the School’s CEIAG co-ordinator to organise alumni careers events and procure former students for the programme. Guiding and supporting volunteers during the careers week.

Be mindful of the diversity of alumni and stakeholders – promote equality and inclusivity in all activities and processes.

Planning, promotion, co-ordination and impact evaluation of all events.

Attending of all QMC committee meetings and preparation of papers for Dinner sub-committee;
-
Liaison with the Old Boys’ Scholarship Fund (OBSF) arm of the QMC with reference to fundraising and the support of projects;
-
Support the Headmaster in shaping and delivering campaigns, supporting key priorities, and monitoring targets. Use stakeholder research and data analysis to make suggestions, monitor performance, and drive future plans and activity.

Receive, record and reconcile termly donations for the School donations fund; liaison with the Mercian Trust over the transfer and use of such donations;

Submitting Gift Aid claims to HMRC;
-
Treasurer for the QMA, including production of simple accounts and financial records

Assist with recruitment of QMA volunteers and allocation to committees;
-
Oversight of the Charity Commission status of the QMA and management of the bank account;

Attend QMA management committee and trustee meetings;
-
Provision of information for the QMA trustees;
-
Being aware of, and complying with, policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and data protection (GDPR), reporting all concerns to an appropriate person;

Attending and participating in other meetings, as required;

Co-ordination of activities, when required, across the Mercian Multi Academy Trust;

Contributing to the overall ethos of the School;

Carrying out any other duties as may reasonably be requested by the Headmaster, other members of the Senior Leadership Team or the Head of Sixth Form.
