About the role:
As the Rural Housing & Infrastructure Enabler, you’ll work closely with local communities, parish councils and partners to enable the delivery of rural affordable housing and essential infrastructure that supports resilient, thriving villages. From initial engagement to project completion, you’ll provide expert advice, build strong partnerships and advocate for the needs of rural residents.
Your role includes conducting housing needs surveys, guiding stakeholders through the affordable housing development process, delivering training, raising awareness, and applying for grants to support infrastructure projects such as sustainability, connectivity and community transport.

- Experience working with communities or in rural housing/development roles.

Big Issue Changing Lives CIC is looking for an Support and Outreach Assistant to support the direct the direct delivery of services to individuals participating in Big Issue enterprises, including selling the Big Issue magazine. The core of the role is facilitating access for members of our Roma Communities to the Hand Up Service and other local services, resources and networks required to address the barriers they are facing to moving forwards out of poverty. Where local services and resources are not available you will also support the Outreach Team with the delivery of information, guidance and some direct interventions, such as training sessions, directly.
This is self-starter role in which you’ll be responsible for connecting with potential service users within the Roma community, introducing the service to them, sharing information from our Hand Up plus services and supporting them to engage with the core Hand Up service. You’ll be working within a small team of Outreach workers and will work to maintain a set of Service Standards which help maintain the quality of the service nationally.
The role is highly flexible and no two days are the same. You’ll bring your own experience and knowledge to the role, as well as your ability to speak Romanian. We will support you to build on that through an ongoing training and development programme which aims to ensure all Hand Up Service Team members have up to date, relevant, knowledge in key areas including housing, benefits, debt, immigration and more. In the course of a day, you’ll usually be working with service users across multiple of these issues and supporting engagement with a wide range of external agencies such as health services, local authorities, charities and more, to get access to services for those you are supporting.
Your main roles and responsibilities will be:
- Undertake phone and in person outreach to introduce the Hand Up service to Roma Big Issues vendors
- Delivery of direct intervention to Roma vendors using guidance and resources provided
- Join meetings with Roma Vendors and Outreach Workers to support with action planning and provision of support and guidance
- Support with translation and interpretation within your local team to enable accessibility of the service for Roma vendors
- Support the local Hand Up Service to build current knowledge of local and national agencies that can support Roma vendors
- Support the organisation and delivery with Roma Vendors of 1-2-1 and group training sessions and drop-ins
- Ensure that your work meets service standards and targets and complete surveys with vendors as required
- Involving Roma service users in the service design and delivery as local and national opportunities arise
- Adhere to all required policies and procedures including with regards to safeguarding, lone and safe working, case work management and expenses and finances
- Undertake any other duties as required by your manager (within reasonable expectations)
You need to be:
- Passionate about and committed to supporting those living in poverty
- Confident communicator face to face and on the phone in both Romanian and English, with ability to convey information clearly
- Able to build rapport with diverse individuals from the Roma community
- Knowledge and understanding of the challenges and inequalities that individuals from the Roma community may face in the UK
- Excellent time management and very organised, with the ability to complete tasks by agreed deadlines
- Good data entry skills
- Able to represent the organisation to other professionals and partner agencies
- Able to work with individuals in both one to one and group formats
- Able to follow guidelines and work within policies, seeking support from line manager as needed
- Willing to work in flexible locations including our community office, as well as visiting vendors at pitches and attending community meetings. This role is not suitable for home- based working.

This role will play a crucial part in supporting individuals, families and children through the family court process as part of the Pathfinder programme. The Housing First Support Worker will be responsible for coordinating and providing a person centred, strength-based support service to create long term sustainable tenancies by empowering customers, increasing independence, and maximising connectivity with the local community.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Delivering wrap-around intensive, trauma informed support to people with multiple and complex issues within their own independent tenancies in the community.
2. Working with Housing First participants to help them articulate their goals and aspirations offering personalised support and promoting choice and wellbeing. Supporting Housing First participants to access community resources, to develop positive peer networks and meaningful leisure opportunities.
3. Maintaining accurate up to date records on the Inform case management system of progress against individual support plans, safety plans and outcomes information.
4. Regularly review the person-centred support plan to update, record and monitor progress of customer caseload.
5. Develop, maintain and co-ordinate effective working relationships with external partners and agencies, promoting effective communication with Housing First residents. Ensuring Connected Housing First is widely known and promoted in Mendip and Somerset.
6. Liaise with landlords to assist the person living in accommodation of their choice; including practical help with furniture; benefits advice and accompanied visits.
7. With the agreement of Housing First participants, to liaise with other agencies to facilitate support including substance misuse and recovery, offending and criminal justice, mental health, Adult social care, debt, domestic abuse, welfare and housing benefits, employment and training.
8. Promote, and actively encourage peer involvement within the service.
9. Complete dynamic risk assessments and maintain own safety by following lone working procedures.
10. Adhere to good practice safeguarding procedures with a positive risk-taking approach to ensure the wellbeing of vulnerable people.
11. To identify barriers of accommodation and managing tenancies, providing support including practical help with benefits, budgeting, furniture, neighbour relations, and liaising with landlords.
12. To contribute to regular reports on the service evaluation project as required.
13. To participate in reflective practice to support and enhance wellbeing in the workplace and personal development.
14. Record all petty cash and other expenditure of project monies in line with Connect Centre policy.
15. Work within the Connect Centre Lone Working Policy and other Connect Centre Health and Safety Policies as appropriate at all times

You will be co-located in Women’s Hubs in Southwark and Lewisham, providing support to women in the community and those leaving custody, and assisting them to access wider-borough services. By providing 1:1 advocacy for your clients, you will assist the organisation in transforming the lives of the most disadvantaged people in our community.

Main Responsibilities:
- Client Care: Provide advocacy, emotional and practical support to women referred to our services.
- Communication: Use a variety of strategies to communicate effectively with service-users, prison and probation staff, external organisations, and the general public.
- Administration: Maintain accurate, confidential service-user records of interaction, interventions, and contact details.

Over the past 8 years, Friends of the Earth has run a successful campaign leadership building programme with diverse young people in Further Education colleges and youth work settings across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The programme, My World My Home, recruits and supports teams of young people to take their first steps in building power in their community and leading their own environmental justice campaigns.
The young people we work with often face marginalisation and they are all new to campaigning and learning about environmental justice. Following our one-year programme our alumni have gone on to become spokespeople in national media, the Welsh Government and the UK Parliament, they have led their own campaigns, and they have become involved with national youth movements for environmental justice.
Key Skills and Attributes:
As a Youth Campaign Coach you will be responsible for delivering our programme in two locations in south Wales, leading face-to-face training and workshops with young people and supporting them as a group and 1-2-1 to build their skills and deliver their campaign actions. It is an exciting time to start this role as we are looking for new partnerships with youth organisations and are exploring embedding My World My Home into Friends of the Earth Cymru community campaigns. We especially welcome candidates who are well networked within south Wales communities to support these new groups.
A background in Youth Work or youth campaigning and a working understanding of the causes and impact of marginalisation (particularly that experienced by racialised, working class and disabled youth) will be essential for this role. Knowledge of community organising approaches would also be helpful.
This role is based in Cardiff to allow for travel via public transport to the My World My Home groups two days a week. However, applications from those living outside the Cardiff area will be considered for the right candidate. We welcome hybrid working and you are able to work both from the Cardiff Friends of the Earth office and from home. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.

This role sits in the Youth and Families team, whose vision is a thriving, powerful and leaderful network of young campaigners with marginalised identities, strongly connected with likeminded partner organisations and other young people, who campaign together for environmental justice, bringing joy, leadership, resilience and impact to the wider movement.
This role will also work closely with the Friends of the Earth Cymru team, who support a unique network of local groups who campaign in communities across Wales.
