General Manager Jobs

This permanent post is ideal for someone who is keen to develop their policy skills as well as build external affairs and communications experience. The role provides opportunity to join a small agile team at the Council of Deans of Health, the representative body for the UK’s university faculties engaged in education and research for nursing, midwifery and the allied health professions.

We are looking for someone with a broad skill set including experience in developing policy, strong interpersonal skills, good organisation, and clear written communication. The successful candidate will be able to balance varied tasks and provide support to colleagues in the Council of Deans of Health team.

Main responsibilities:

• Support the development of Council policy with a particular focus on equality, diversity and inclusion.
• Monitor, analyse and evaluate policy developments, producing briefings, position papers and consultation responses.
• Liaise with members on both a formal and informal basis to develop and test policy priorities and positions.
• Represent the Council of Deans of Health to external stakeholders, building effective working relationships with a range of organisations.
• Contribute to the effective external communication of the Council’s policy work, including working with the Council’s communications lead to draft press releases and political positions.
• Help facilitate the meetings of nation, regional and strategic policy groups online and offline including travel across the UK.
• Contribute to other areas of the Council’s work as appropriate including project coordination and cross-team working.
• Undertake any other such duties or general tasks and hours of work as may reasonably be required.

The Council has an office in Woburn House, central London although all staff are currently working in a mixed home/office working model. The postholder should therefore be able to attend the office as required. The salary for this post is £30,305 – £36,575 depending on experience. The Council offers a 10% pension contribution, flexible approaches to working, travelling opportunities and continued development.

Overview

The National Paralympic Heritage Trust (NPHT) has embarked on a new exciting five-year strategy – ‘Becoming Seamlessly Inclusive 2023-2028’. To help us on this journey, this is an exciting opportunity to join our team as the Trust’s ‘Volunteer and Trainee Support Officer’, a key role within our organisation. We are looking for someone who would enjoy supporting our volunteers and trainees and who can demonstrate good administration skills.

The NPHT is a young dynamic and diverse organisation and a leader in accessible heritage. Background

The NPHT was formed in 2015 with the core purpose to ‘enlighten and inspire future generations by celebrating, cherishing and bringing the Paralympic heritage and its stories of human endeavour to life’ and in doing so, to challenge negative perceptions of disability. Our purpose is to celebrate, cherish and bring the heritage to life, in a compelling and evocative way, securing a legacy, feeding a growing public interest since London 2012, changing attitudes, and instilling national pride.

In our role as caretakers of one of the World’s most important disability history collections, the Paralympic movement, we aim to become, and help others become seamlessly inclusive. From 2023 to 2028 for every £2 we spend, we aim to positively broaden somebody’s understanding of disability and transcend heritage access.

In our first 5 years 2017 to 2022 we have reached over half a million people across the UK, and overseas (over 50% of our website visitors are from abroad representing 195 different nations), establishing an accredited museum and collection of international importance.  Our learning programmes and digital engagement are recognised as providing ground-breaking access to D/deaf and disabled audiences.

Our purpose and moral responsibility is to continue to bring this unique British heritage to life, building awareness of Paralympic history, sport and the individuals involved in its development.

We seek to do this in a compelling and evocative way that pushes the boundaries of access for all, changing attitudes, serving national inclusion agendas, and instilling national pride.

Role of the Volunteer and Trainee Support Officer:

1. Overall

1.1 To support and develop the volunteer and work placement programmes.

1.2 To practically support two of our trainees with neurodiversity.

2. Key Responsibilities

2.1 To oversee the volunteer programme with support from the Head of Programmes.

2.2 To manage the ‘access to work’ programmes.

2.3 To act as a work coach to the trainees, helping them deliver their work plans.

2.4 To support the ‘Learning Manager and Collections Engagement Officer’ with the provision of volunteers for their programmes of work.

2.5 To support the work placement’s programme and individuals completing them, by planning out the work in liaison across the team and helping the ‘Head of Programmes’ carry out the work.

2.6 To support the Trust’s community liaison.

2.7 To support other programmes of work as directed.

3. Meetings and reporting

3.1 The ‘Volunteer and Trainee Support Officer’will be employed by the National Paralympic Heritage Trust and be responsible to the Board of Trustees.

3.2 The ‘Volunteer and Trainee Support Officer’ will report to, be managed and supported by the ‘Head of Programmes’.

3.3 The ‘Volunteer and Trainee Support Officer will have monthly meetings with the ‘Head of Programmes reporting on progress and raising any areas of concern.

4. Period of Contract

4.1 May 2024 to the end of April 2026.

5. Contract fee/Pay

5.1 The proposed fee is £25,000 a year pro-rata - three days a week (24 hours).

5.2 In addition to the payment outlined above the ‘Volunteer and Trainee Support Officer’ will be paid reasonable agreed expenses incurred subject to the supply of receipts/travel expense claim. The post holder will also be eligible for a stakeholder pension.

The Role 

This is a newly created opportunity for you to support all aspects of bid writing, grant applications, and responding to tenders at Best Beginnings. This will include collaborating with colleagues and partners to develop and execute engaging applications to a range of funders to support our work. 

You will be a confident writer, able to communicate the value of our work clearly and succinctly, ideally with previous experience writing and/or assisting with grant and bid proposals. Experience in the charity sector is not essential but highly desired. 

Working with the Head of Fundraising, you will focus on identifying new funding opportunities, planning approaches, gathering information, and writing high quality, compelling applications, to generate additional income for us to further develop our services. 

You will also be identifying appropriate funding sources for organisations we support, providing them with guidance on writing high quality applications, planning their year, and developing a suite of resources with the communications team to enable this. 

You will need experience of writing content and developing applications to large and small funding bodies. You will be able to evidence securing income and be skilled in presenting complex project information in a clear and engaging way. 

With exceptional communication skills (both written and verbal), a mind for collaboration in a team, scoping project potential, and facilitating team conversations to turn ideas into specific, actionable pathways for new and existing projects.

We're Hiring! Green Space for Health Programme Director (Maternity Cover)

This is an exciting senior role for an environmentally committed leader to cover maternity leave. We are looking for someone who can take strategic oversight of our Green Space for Health programme and provide effective management of the project and its staff.

• Home-based with monthly travel to Oxford (expenses covered)
•  Full time (37.5 hours per week)

About the role

This is an exciting senior role for an environmentally committed leader to cover maternity leave. We are looking for someone who can take strategic oversight of our Green Space for Health programme and provide effective management of the project and its staff.

Our Green Space for Health programme helps to realise the value of green space for physical and mental health, both at healthcare sites and in the wider community. Our flagship project, the NHS Forest, promotes tree planting and woodland creation at NHS sites, supporting and encouraging sites to plant and maintain trees through offering free trees and advice. We support NHS sites to develop their greenspace for the benefits of patients, health staff and communities, while improving biodiversity and combatting climate change. We do this by encouraging green space enhancements such as meadow areas, vegetable growing, orchards and therapeutic gardens, as well as supporting the delivery of nature-based interventions for health.

The Green Space for Health Director will oversee the development of the NHS Forest and other Green Space for Health projects, delivering the programme strategy. This will include managing the Green Space for Health team, overseeing the delivery of our funded projects including budget management, coordinating reports to funders and trustees, and taking a strategic lead on the development and funding of the Green Space for Health programme in consultation with other stakeholders. The Green Space for Health Director will deliver our programme strategy through fulfilling the following responsibilities:

• Provide line management for the Green Space for Health Team’s 5 staff members. This will include one-to-one meetings, appraisals and regular team meetings.
• Oversee the delivery of the Green Space for Health funded projects, including NHS Forest tree planting projects and our Nature Recovery Ranger programme.
• Raise income for, monitor and oversee the programme budget in consultation with CSH’s fundraising and finance team.

In this role, you will support the development and implementation of Picker's policy influencing strategy to make person centred health and social care a reality for everyone. Climate Change Adaptation Officer
Salary: £31,000 - £35,000

As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) sixth assessment report laid out in March 2023, we are now on the brink of irrevocable damage from climate change; this is our ‘final warning’ and the time is now for action to address this crisis.

The report highlighted that restoring nature was one of the key actions needed to address this issue. Somerset Wildlife Trust are at the forefront of this work in Somerset and are fully committed to this path through our Wilder Somerset 2030 Strategy and to delivering a vision whereby we reverse biodiversity loss and tackle the climate crisis.

Developing and further embedding the ‘Act to Adapt’ process, through our ‘Adapting Somerset’ and ‘Somerset’s Wilder Coast’ projects to support communities and to develop plans to adapt their local areas to the impacts of climate change.

Responsibility 1: Providing leadership and technical expertise

Being proactive and nurture strong relationships by:

• Providing leadership on SWT Climate Change Nature Adaptation work.
• Working closely with the Local Nature Partnership Coordinator and Advocacy Manager, and wider project team from partner organisations, to develop and deliver a programme of online and in-person communications, meetings and workshops. This is designed to foster climate change adaptation in the county supporting nature’s recovery and community resilience, and therefore involves working closely with farmers and landowners, all layers of local council, infrastructure experts, academics and the general public, including communities already impacted by flooding.
• Providing line management to the Climate Adaptation Assistant.
• Continuing developing the RAD approach for priority habitats, alongside the Landscape Recovery team, which will contribute to managing land within internationally important wetlands.
• Keeping abreast of national and international climate change developments and relate these to Somerset.

Responsibility 2: Engagement with Communities and Creating Robust Partnerships

Lead engagement efforts by:

• Contributing to discussions and workstreams developing climate change adaptation pathways at a county level, and in specific local areas relating to flooding, drought and wildfire.
• Developing information for a lay audience regarding the role of nature in reducing the impacts of climate change, including: sea-level rise; predicted changes in land use; warming, etc. and to help people understand what the future may bring especially in Somerset’s more vulnerable nature habitats.
• Supporting people’s wider understanding of the role of nature to mitigate climate change through carbon sequestration and storage.
• Continuing the rollout of the Act to Adapt process in local communities, organising events and workshops and using the Climate Adaptation Toolkit to explain the process of developing community and nature based solutions to the big issues of climate change.

Lead and support projects and reporting by:

• Working with the Somerset Local Nature Recovery Strategy team to incorporate climate adaptation and vulnerability principles to these priorities.
• Assisting with work to share information and project developments with project partners in the UK.
• Developing and implement a communications plan that raises awareness of the project and its impact; garners support; and highlights Somerset as a place at the frontline for climate change. This will include engagement through social media and the production of awareness materials in printed and online formats.
• Managing the budget of the Adapting Somerset project and keep track of time contributions to the ELM’s Landscape Recovery and Somerset’s Wilder Coast projects.
• Monitoring and evaluating progress and impact, meeting project milestones and reporting to funders.
• Representing SWT externally in meetings, in the media and by giving presentations to various audiences.

Key responsibilities ​

Reporting to the Executive Director, you will:​​

• Work on the development of technical frameworks, guidelines, standards, certification or audit processes relevant for implementing regulation for children’s rights in the digital environment at international, EU and UK levels. This includes representing 5Rights in technical meetings and working groups, such as at the IEEE and CEN-CENELEC.​

• Work to promote and support the uptake of these standards by the tech industry, including by working with industry associations, chambers of commerce and tech companies directly.​

• Lead our work to gather technical evidence on company compliance with regulation for children in the UK and EU.​

• Identify cases of non-compliance, develop argumentation and engage with companies and regulators for remedy, with legal support as necessary.​

• Work to promote compliance, by supporting public accountability for non-compliance and positive visibility of best practice.​

• Lead our work to raise awareness and stimulate action of industry stakeholders, notably advertisers and investors.​

• Liaise with technologists and experts around the world, exchanging knowledge and staying up to date on the latest developments, research and emerging issues.​

Person specification​

You’ll be a confident and skilled researcher, a clear, fresh thinker, and an excellent writer. High attention to detail, an eye for nuance, and the ability to digest complex information quickly and communicate it coherently are all musts. A background in technology issues or children’s rights is preferable, but not essential. In October 2022 Salford City Council commissioned Salford CVS to undertake research into the strengths of the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector as part of their Joint Needs and Strengths Assessment.

Every three years since 2008, Salford CVS leads on State of the VCSE Sector research in Salford and also across Greater Manchester. Working with other local infrastructure organisations, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the VCSE sector. Our last research report was published in 2021 and we have started planning for the research to be conducted this year.

In August 2023 we further developed our VCSE sector research and insight work with the commencement of our Salford 99 longitudinal study. This research project is designed to understand the issues affecting the VCSE sector in Salford and aims to track 99 VCSE organisations every six months for a three-year period, so that we gain ‘live’ insight in between our three-yearly State of the VCSE sector large research project. Alongside this work we conduct a Pulse Check survey with a variety of VCSE organisations to get a snapshot of what is changing for them each quarter.

This exciting VCS Research and Insight role involves a combination of VCSE engagement and insight work across Salford.

Job Description

The Head of Advocacy and Policy will be responsible for developing an excellent Advice Service and Retention Team to support and advise students effectively to enable excellent student experience and satisfaction.

This role will lead on the development of effective insights, representation and support initiatives/campaigns for students, across our three campuses at Greenwich, Avery Hill and Medway.

This role will enhance work with the diverse student population of the University of Greenwich and lead a dynamic team to ensure students have consistent and accessible services that contribute to positive student experience.

This role sits within the wider Membership Services department, together with other key areas consisting of; Activities, Sport, Academic Communities, Representation and Democracy, we provide a high-quality service for students, that they can shape, steer and be at the heart of.

This postholder will be part of the GSU Senior Leadership Team and will be expected to contribute to department and organisation wide strategic development.

The post holder will:

• Have expert knowledge in areas of in relation to Advice and Retention and policies and legislation relating to such activity
• Support and develop strong student-led communities and campaigns in areas of: Advice, wellbeing and retention so that members can thrive
• Provide line management support to staff so that the team have up to date, specialist advice skills, knowledge and understanding of University regulations, policies and procedures that may affect the work of the Advice service and oversee engagement across Greenwich’s 3 campuses
• Undertake casework and provide expert advice for the team on all aspects of Advice
• Lead on the project management of wellbeing/health promotion campaigns and initiatives throughout the year, as well as any external bids through bodies such as OfS
• Oversee the Retention and Wellbeing Project work, and other relevant projects with external partners
• Lead on insights work relating to retention, wellbeing and support
• Lead on responses to external consultation and enquiry responses, including but not limited to OfS, Department for Education, OIA and Universities UK
• Support elected officers to deliver on campaigning priorities
• Ensure the Advice service has the skills and is equipped to support the diverse needs of students at Greenwich and Kent at Medway.
• Provide regular insights and reports on the GSU Membership to inform our strategy and service provision
• Work with other Heads to develop relevant and modern Front of House services for each GSU campus ensuring ease of access and consistency for all members.

Strategic Development

• Contribute to the strategic objectives of GSU, with a particular focus on advice, support and wellbeing in relation to the student experience
• Develop and oversee a new and innovative approach to proactive health and wellbeing campaigns that empower students to look after themselves and each other, as well as seeking support
• Lead on Access and Participation Plan Engagement, acting as the key contact on this area with the University.
• Build and maintain strong working relationships with relevant senior UoG staff and departments including Student Academic Services, Faculties and our partners at Kent Unio
• Develop and oversee the Advice service to support advocacy initiatives at multiple levels within the University, ensuring both students and University stakeholders view GSU as a credible and reliable source of information on the needs of students.

Monitoring and Evaluation

• Develop and oversee a structured approach to gathering, analysing and reporting on data relating to engagement of students with our services and to student views on key issues relating to retention and success
• Develop and oversee processes of collecting quantitative and qualitative data from casework to analyse trends and inform feedback for the SU and university
• Ensure evaluation mechanism are embedded in the teams working practises and that findings are shared and used to implement learnings with the goal of improving services
• Support Officers by preparing information, statistics and trends about key services to be shared within the University committee cycle
• Be responsible for the implementation of service standards for the Advocacy and Policy Team and to monitor and report on adherence to these standards
• Prepare materials to apply for any relevant quality mark accreditations for the service.

Budget and Financial Management

• Manage a budget relating to Advocacy and Policy including any restricted funds.
• Be responsible for the teams resources, ensuring these are effectively allocated, managed and controlled
• Review and establish processes, systems, polices and where appropriate standard procedures to maximise efficiency ensure deadlines are met and a positive return on investment
• Review and provide narrative for scrutiny at monthly management meetings with the Finance Team

Stakeholder management

• Collaborate with GSU colleagues, particularly the Student Voice and Engagement Teams to ensure we have a consistent approach to how we work with and support students
• Work with students through our representative structures and forums to ensure we shape services students want and need, taking into consideration the varying campus priorities
• Maintain strong relationships with key university staff to develop, deliver and evaluate collaborative projects and interventions supporting advice and retention
• Attend meetings relating to Advocacy and Policy as well as associated areas at both GSU, the University and externally, included, but not limited to regional networks

GMYN is looking for a new Grants & Trusts Fundraiser to join our team, and support our exciting youth charity to apply to a range of trusts/grant giving bodies to generate income.

The role:

As an integral part of the Fundraising and Development team, you will work closely with the rest of our team to secure financial income enabling GMYN to meet its income generation targets. The Grants and Trust Fundraiser will bring their own ideas to seek new grant providers and apply accordingly for delivery and core funding for the charity.

You don't have to have worked in the voluntary youth sector previously. Our aim is to find a suitable candidate that can meet the selection criteria below. This can be from a past/current income generation/bid writer role, or a role with transferable skills.

More importantly we are looking for someone with genuine passion for working for a youth charity. Someone who can join our fundraising team and make a big impression, helping us to achieve our income generation goals.

We want to hire an enthusiastic person who can maintain positive working relationships with various supporters, delivery partners and all stakeholders.

Essential Criteria:

• Proven experience of bid writing or other similar income generation work with demonstrable transferable skills.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken with the ability to present confidently.
• Ability to self-manage, work independently to targets but also join up your work with the rest of the fundraising team.
• Ability to manage multiple deadlines and workstreams with a “can do” attitude in order to produce positive results.
• Experience and/or understanding of producing impact reports and reporting to various audiences, ideally funders.
• Motivation to work towards the charitable purpose of the organisation.
• Ability to effectively steward existing funder relationships to generate continuation funding.
• Competent in Microsoft office.

Desirable Criteria:

• Knowledge and understanding of fundraising methods and changing trends in the funding environment.
• Experience of researching trusts and grant funders to identify suitable income opportunities for both programme related and unrestricted core costs.
• Knowledge of the Voluntary and Community Sector and wider fundraising environment.
• Experience of using customer relationship management data bases.
