The Legal Director is a newly created senior leadership role and will lead and shape Release’s legal services, setting the strategic direction and ensuring the delivery of high‑quality, client‑centred representation. The role will expand access to justice through strong legal aid provision, embed harm reduction principles across all legal work, and uphold rigorous regulatory and ethical standards. It will also play a key role in sustaining Release’s commitment to training and developing the next generation of social justice lawyers.

This pivotal post combines oversight of a multidisciplinary legal team with movement‑driven advocacy and strategic litigation. The Legal Director will identify and pursue high‑impact cases to challenge unlawful policies and drive systemic change, while building strong external relationships with affected communities, policymakers, and partners. Working collaboratively, the role will co‑create innovative models of legal support that respond to emerging needs and amplify the voices of people most affected by drug laws and wider structural injustice.

As Legal Director, you will:

Set Strategic Direction: Define and implement strategies to expand legal aid provision, improve access to justice, and embed harm reduction principles across all legal work.

Person Specification

Essential

• Minimum 9 years + post qualified solicitor with a current practising certificate, and
• Minimum 7 years + significant experience in legal aid supervision and regulatory compliance, and

The successful candidate will therefore be instrumental in taking this key income stream forward, add to an exciting portfolio and gain further training and support, working as part of a high-performing and super supportive team, ready for its next development phase.

The Grants, Trusts & Foundations Manager will work closely with and report to the Head of Philanthropy to develop the Trust pipeline, along with instrumental cross-team work on applications and reporting processes for other income streams. Whilst we work towards developing a more diverse funding model and navigate changes to the external Trust environment, sustaining and growing income from Trusts will remain vital.

The post-holder will manage a Philanthropy Officer (Trusts & Major Donors) and, together, they will be instrumental in taking the Trust programme to the next level, establishing lasting relationships with funders, securing new grants, increasing multi-year gifts and improving both quality and volume of applications and reports. They will also support the Philanthropy Officer, and the wider team, to the same end with their respective portfolios.

Purpose of the role

The Senior Legal Officer plays a key role in supporting ILPA’s legal and policy work on immigration, economic migration, asylum and nationality.

Working under the direction of the Legal Director, the post holder will lead detailed legal and policy analysis, support parliamentary and influencing activity and contribute to high-quality information and engagement for ILPA members.

Key responsibilities

1. Legal and policy analysis

a. Produce high-quality analysis of immigration, asylum and nationality law and policy.

b. Monitor developments in legislation, case law and policy, including secondary legislation and guidance.

c. Prepare written briefings, updates and summaries for members, trustees and external stakeholders.

d. Support the Legal Director in the development and delivery of ILPA’s legal strategy.

2.       Parliamentary and influencing work

a. Support ILPA’s parliamentary work, including monitoring legislation and parliamentary business.

b. Draft consultation responses, briefings and evidence submissions.

c. Assist in engagement with parliamentarians, officials, peers and external organisations.

· Monitor, evaluate and report on progress against partnership KPIs, targets, activities and budgets. Identify opportunities for partnership visibility and communications, and where possible employee engagement.

· Support with identifying large scale national partnership opportunities and tracking these via our CRM.

· Manage and develop existing corporate engagement products such as Payroll Giving and various digital giving platforms.

· Create and manage the content for our quarterly corporate e-communication.

· Respond to urgent situations, identifying and responding to fundraising opportunities.

· Work within Heart Research UK’s due diligence guidelines.

· Make effective use of the CRM and deliver excellent standards of supporter experience, ensuring that systems are kept up to date

· Work closely with the wider Heart Research UK fundraising team, supporting colleagues, promoting national fundraising initiatives and proactively contributing ideas and knowledge

· Work closely with the marketing team on promotions, publicity, public relations and advertising in relation to fundraising activities

· Work in line with the Fundraising Code of Practice, and abiding at all times by the rules set out in the GDPR

Essential Attributes

· A track record of stewarding and maximising corporate partnership(s).

· Experience of successful partnership outreach work and examples of new partnerships that ave been secured

· Proven experience of working to financial budgets and operational objectives

· Passionate interest in charity sector, and the drive to further your fundraising knowledge.  

· Experience of using a fundraising database (we use Beacon)

· Experience of working in a multi-stakeholder environment.

· Ability to be proactive and identify new engagement and fundraising opportunities

· Ability to multi task and prioritise/meet deadlines within a collaborative team environment

· Ability to work at pace to demanding targets.

· Excellent attention to detail, strong ability to proof-read and pick up inconsistencies

· Strong presentation, communication and interpersonal skills

· Ability to network confidently with people at senior levels

· Strong Microsoft Word, Excel & PowerPoint skills

· Confident to work independently, as well as to be a team player

Desirable Attributes

· Experience of supporting and/or writing strategic charity partnership applications and delivering pitches.

· Experience of event management and co-ordination to engage corporates and their employees

· Understanding of the third sector, charity law and regulations

· Experience of developing and implementing supporter journeys

· Knowledge of the rules surrounding GDPR, and the Fundraising Code of Practice

· Experience of using a fundraising database (we use Beacon)
