Executive Head of Communications, Marketing and Campaigns
War Child UK
Circa £75,000 per annum
London (Hybrid and flexible working policy)
Reporting to the Director of Fundraising and Engagement, this is a pivotal new role at a defining moment for the organisation, as War Child UK launches a new strategy and refreshed brand.
You will lead a team of experts across marketing, communications, digital, press, content and advocacy, shaping how War Child UK engages supporters, partners and decision-makers. You will oversee the delivery of high impact campaigns and communications on the worst crises affecting children and across a portfolio of bold music, art, gaming and corporate partnerships and events.
You will develop an audience-led communications, brand and marketing strategy that drives engagement, income and influence, ensuring campaigns and advocacy are fully integrated and mutually reinforcing.
This role combines creativity with strategic judgement, providing senior leadership on external positioning and reputational risk and crisis communications advisory – and shaping how War Child UK shows up in the world, while enabling a motivated, ambitious team to perform at its best.
About you
We are looking for an experienced, hands-on leader with:

Strategic communications leader with a proven track record of delivering integrated, audience‑first communications and marketing strategies that drive engagement, income and influence in complex, fast‑moving environments.

Expert in narrative, brand and advocacy, with strong experience shaping external positioning, leading high‑impact campaigns, and using communications to advance political advocacy and public change.

Insight‑led and externally focused, skilled in using audience insight, data and cultural, media and political trends to inform strategy, prioritisation and decision‑making.

Credible senior adviser and collaborator, with strong influencing skills, experience advising leadership on external positioning and reputational risk, and the ability to build effective relationships across teams and with external partners.

Motivational leader and executor, able to build and manage high‑performing teams, deliver high‑quality content and campaigns, balance creativity with discipline, protect workload and wellbeing and uphold best practice in EDI, safeguarding and ethics.

About the Role
As a key member of our Mass Fundraising Marketing Acquisition team, you’ll play a vital role in developing, delivering, and managing customer acquisition strategies in a team that manages a diverse portfolio of income-generating products and propositions. These include our regular giving programme, lottery and raffle activities, legacies, and events and community fundraising.
You'll help drive performance and innovation across your product area. You’ll manage campaigns across a range of media channels including TV, digital, audio, PPC, and social, ensuring we reach and inspire audiences effectively.
You'll be:
- Leading the delivery of high-impact acquisition campaigns across multiple channels
- Collaborating with BHF’s lead creative and media agencies on large-scale and always-on campaigns
- Monitoring and optimising campaign performance to maximise results
- Supporting the development of new propositions and creative approaches to supporter engagement
- This role may require some travel across the U.K. to attend stakeholder and partner meetings.
About you
You have significant direct marketing experience, preferably within the charity sector, and are an excellent campaign manager. You also have knowledge of recurring revenue models and are an experienced project manager. You’re a strong negotiator who has experience managing multiple third-party agencies, has strong interpersonal and communication skills, and is an excellent copywriter.
You are motivated to exceed targets and have experience working in a fast-moving marketing team, which enables you to work at pace and manage a high workload.
As a highly numerate strategic thinker, you can set long-term and short-term objectives, manipulate and analyse data across a variety of media, and use your own initiative to identify opportunities and solve problems.
You’ll also have experience with:
- Working with expenditure budgets
- Insight, data analysis, and reporting
- Managing multiple external agency relationships
- Budget, income and expenditure reporting
- Using CRM systems
- Working with multiple stakeholders
- Paid media, particularly digital marketing
Working arrangements
This is a hybrid role, where your work will be split between your home and at least two days per week, on average, in our London Office. This may vary from time to time, so you will need to work in a flexible way to unlock your best work for our cause.

Role Overview:

This pivotal position involves managing the marketing and promotional activities for a diverse portfolio of events, with a focus on community engagement and fundraising initiatives, ensuring every project enhances the organisation’s mission and reach.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement marketing strategies for a range of community and fundraising events, ensuring alignment with organisational goals.
- Coordinate all aspects of event marketing projects, including content creation, design, external supplier management, and logistics, to meet deadlines and budget requirements.
- Manage communications with external partners such as printers and creative agencies, ensuring high-quality outputs within cost constraints.
- Collaborate across teams to produce engaging content for social media, newsletters, flyers, and other marketing materials, maintaining brand consistency.
- Source imagery, stories, and other resources to promote events through printed and digital channels, including social media campaigns.
- Oversee event photography, liaising with staff and volunteers, and ensuring necessary consents are obtained.
- Maintain and update the organisation’s website and intranet with the latest event information, ensuring content accuracy and relevance.
- Support delivery of digital communications such as email campaigns, e-newsletters, and targeted outreach to maximise engagement.
- Build and sustain positive relationships with external stakeholders and internal teams, ensuring collaborative working and project success.
- Act as the primary contact for all marketing needs related to the organisation’s events, overseeing planning, execution, and post-event analysis.
Person Specification:
- Extensive experience managing marketing for events, particularly within the charity or community sector.
- Proven ability to develop strategic marketing concepts across various channels including digital, print, and social media.
- Strong content creation skills, with experience in writing high-quality materials and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across different teams.
- Knowledge of digital marketing tools, email campaigns, CMS platforms, and social media strategies.
- Well-organised, with the ability to prioritise tasks efficiently under pressure.
- A proactive team player with good communication skills and high personal integrity.
- Willingness to learn about relevant cultural and organisational contexts and adapt accordingly.
- Possession of a driver’s licence and willingness to travel as required.
