Who we are

What we do: we partner with schools, universities and businesses to run face-to-face and virtual coaching programmes for disadvantaged young people with relatable role models who are just a few years ahead in their life journey, we help raise their confidence, independence, resiliance and attainment. Our coahes are typically undergraduate volunteers or senior pupils in schools who we train and support to become effective coaches. 

The Challenge

By the age of 5, 43% of disadvantaged young people have not reached a good level of literacy and numeracy.

57% of children from disadvantaged backgrounds leave primary schools without reaching the expected standard in reading and maths.

A disadvantaged child is 50% less likely to achieve passes in GCSE English and Maths.

Only 16% of Free School Meal eligible young people attend university, compared to more than 75% of those who attend an independent school.

1 in 3 young people frpm disadvantaged backgrounds are not in any form of sustained education, apprenticship or employment five years after their GCSEs.

1 in 5 undergraduates from disadvantaged backgrounds don't complete their degree, double the rate for the most advantaged.

Those in elite occupations from disadvantaged backgrounds earn £6,400 per year less in the same role, and take 25% longer to gain a promotion.

Our Impact

We have been delivering coaching programmes across England since 2014, supporting over 15,000 young people in that time. We have a small but growing number of programmes directly coaching undergraduates from underrepresented backgrounds (our Lifecycle programme). However, the majority of our work and impact takes place in schools, involving us training undergraduates (our Core programme) or senior pupils (our Peer to Peer programme) to be coaches to younger pupils.

We are proud that our programmes demonstrate consistently strong impact on the outcomes most closely associated with improving social mobility: attainment, social & emotional development, and school attendance.

Our most recent independent evaluation found:

Increases in maths (11.1%) and English (5.1%) attainment.

Significant improvements (min 8%) in metacognition, self-efficacy, and motivation.

Persistently absent pupils’ school attendance increased by 11%!

We are a small but mighty team, with a mixture of experiences including youth work, teaching, music, finance, social work and many others. Role description

In the 25/26 academic year, we will be expanding our work significantly, supporting close to 3,000 young people from Cornwall to Northumberland. The majority of this growth will be through a one-year project we are running in partnership with the Education Endowment Foundation.

This project is a randomised control trial (RCT) of our Peer to Peer coaching programme, where we will be working with an additional 50 new secondary schools. We have seen consistently strong impact from this programme on the attainment, social & emotional development, and school attendance of disadvantaged young people for many years. This EEF supported RCT now gives us the opportunity to test this impact at significant scale, specifically on the maths attainment, maths self-efficacy, and school attendance of disadvantaged Y10 and Y7 pupils (see here for more details). 

To support with this delivery, we are looking to recruit additional fixed-term (October 2025 - July 2026) Programme Managers, both full and part time, in the following regions:

1. South West (including Cornwall and Plymouth) Part time, 2-3 days per week

2. South East England (including Greater London, Hampshire, Sussex, Kent, Berkshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, and Milton Keynes) Full time

3. North West (including Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and Cheshire) Part time, 3-4 days per week

4. North East (including Northumberland, Newcastle, Tyneside and Teesside) Part time, 2-3 days per week

You will have end-to-end ownership of your own allocation of programmes, which may involve a mixture of Peer to Peer, Core and Lifecycle programmes. Whilst delivering our programmes you will be required to build excellent relationships with our school and university partners, support with training and developing our undergraduate volunteers, use our evaluation frameworks to assess impact, and lead on conversations related to retention and expansion.

Candidates should be able to cover all locations in the given region they are applying for, so access to a car would be an advantage, but is not essential. At times team members may be asked to travel to a location outside of their region, but this will be rare and sufficient notice and TOIL will be given where appropriate.

All roles are on fixed term contracts starting Monday 6th October 2025 and finishing 31st July 2026. The majority of direct delivery in schools will begin early November. The first few weeks in the role will combine a mixture of induction, training, programme observations, programme set up, and volunteer recruitment for our Core programmes.

Whilst there is the potential for a permanent role beyond the length of this project, this will be based on our levels of school retention and business development, and so cannot be guaranteed.

Role details

Managing and delivering programmes

• Coordinate and run multiple in-school and online programmes, typically requiring travel to schools most working days.

• Set timelines for programme start and finish dates. 

• Oversee programme quality and communicate with school staff weekly to provide feedback after sessions. 

• Facilitate in-school or digital workshops for groups of pupils (KS1-5). 

• Plan and organise graduation trips to a local university for pupils on the programme.

• Collect data for monitoring and evaluation purposes, such as pre and post programme questionnaires, attendance records, and pupil and coach feedback.

• Report regularly to the Programmes Team Leader on key performance indicators and programme updates.

• Build and maintain high quality relationships with pupils, schools, and universities..

• Collect data and write impact reports and case studies for each programme.

Recruiting and managing undergraduate volunteers (in regions with Core programmes):

• Recruit and retain volunteer undergraduate coaches.

• Coordinate and allocate undergraduate coaches to Core school programmes, communicating with them weekly and when needed arranging transport for them to schools.

• Deliver training to volunteers both in-person and online. 

• Develop and maintain relationships with universities, particularly access, outreach, and widening participation teams.

Expanding our reach and impact:

• Ensure retention of schools and universities within the region by delivering high quality programmes, and leading retention, renewal, and expansion conversations with partners.

• Support the growth of our network of schools, Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs), Local Education Authorities, and universities in your region.

• Contribute to programme design, take part in a working group and whole team meetings.

• Gather and create content for social media and marketing materials. 

• Running pupil and school leader focus groups.

• Carry out other tasks that are within the scope and spirit of the role.

Person Specification

Essential characteristics and experience

Below are the key attributes candidates will need to be confident of demonstrating.

 

• Passion for social mobility. We have big aims and are looking for those who share our desire to make education fairer in the UK.

• Ability to think on your feet. Delivering programmes with young people can be unpredictable, so you will need to be comfortable working reactively to solve challenges at short notice.

• Programme or project management experience. In particular the ability to be organised, plan ahead, and manage competing priorities and timelines.

• Experience with young people. Comfortable running a session or delivering a workshop with a group of young people from age 8-18. (Please note, the vast majority of our programmes are at secondary phase).

• Relationship building and facilitating. This is a public-facing role so you will be involved in communicating and delivering workshops to groups as well as communicating our mission to a wide range of stakeholders (business leaders, senior members of MATs, universities etc.).

• Excellent communication skills, particularly public speaking. You should be comfortable talking to groups of 5 or 500.

• Ability to make quick and clear decisions.

Desired characteristics and experience

• Understanding of the specific barriers to social mobility, both nationally and regionally, and the context for the young people we work with.

We’re looking for someone to coordinate our complex casework, supporting the individuals involved, seeking out, organising and creating relevant documentation, and liaising with other people and organisations involved in the case.

Your work will be primarily based within our Advocacy Service, where you’ll work with people who have been discriminated against because they stammer. The individuals seeking support from this service are often distressed by what has happened to them and need emotional support. Alongside that emotional support, to work out how best to help them and to effectively challenge what has happened, you will need to get detailed descriptions of what has happened, evidence and documentation, follow up with the person and relevant organisations regularly, and liaise with our team of legal advisors. You will also need to lead or attend occasional meetings with representatives from other organisations.

BACKGROUND

STAMMA is a forward thinking, innovative and mission-led charity punching above its weight, with a forensic focus on realigning attitudes and understanding of stammering, so that a stammer is accepted simply as a difference. We’ve a new strategic plan, supported by the National Lottery, so now couldn’t be a better time to join.

The aim of the caseworker role work is to support individuals in effectively challenging instances of discrimination. Further, the Advocacy Service seeks to use these instances as a route to working with systems and organisations to create ways of working that are more inclusive for employees, service users and customers who stammer.

The Advocacy Service is coordinated by Kirsten Howells, STAMMA’s Director of Services, and supported by a small team of dedicated volunteers.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

• Working knowledge of the Equality Act (2010) in relation to disability and the Disability Discrimination Act (1995, NI).
• Good understanding of stammering and the barriers people who stammer face in society.
• Good comprehension skills in written English, and ability to read long complex documentation.
• Ability to represent complex information in a simpler way.
• Attention to detail.
• Tenacity and ability to follow-up with individuals regularly.
• Experience of providing emotional support to individuals.
• Sufficiently comfortable to work via email, online meetings and to use the phone (so that you can use the communication route which is most comfortable or appropriate for service users).

Desirable

• It would be brilliant if you stammer, but not essential.
• It would be useful if you are a speech and language therapist with experience working with children and adults who stammer, but not essential.
• Demonstrable history working in a similar role within the charity/NGO sector.

DUTIES

Case management

• Be the initial point of contact for new cases coming into the Advocacy Service.
• Gather detailed case information and documentation
• Support and develop the volunteer team in becoming key points of contact for individuals in straightforward cases.
• Be the primary point of contact for individuals in complex cases.
• Review complex documentation and prepare case summaries for our legal team.
• Liaise with our team of legal advisors to seek guidance in relevant cases.
• Attend case-related online meetings with service users.
•  Advocate for service users in meetings with employers or other organisations.
• Present pros and cons of different actions and support service users to make informed choices about what actions they want to take in their case.
• Take on complex cases in STAMMA’s Employment and Helpline Services when required.

Reporting & tracking

• Work with Director of Services to create tracking and reporting systems for cases.
• Gather feedback from service users.
• Monitor and analyse service performance, to support a culture of improvement. 
• Develop 4 ‘impact stories’ highlighting the difference the Advocacy Service has made to service users and organisations. 

Ongoing

• Work with Communication & Content Lead to promote the Advocacy Service to STAMMA’s membership.

STAMMA offers a flexible working environment, with an office near Covent Garden, or you may work from home, and time off in lieu is available for those working extra hours.  The charity matches up to 8% towards a Pension Scheme.  All staff are required to attend six-weekly team meetings at the London office.

Holiday entitlement
Attractive holiday package totalling 28 days pa, including Christmas closure, plus Bank Holidays.  Pro rata for part time staff. We close from Christmas to the New Year for all staff.

Flexible working
We have an office in London which you can work from full or part time.  Otherwise, staff meet virtually at noon on Thursdays, and physically every 6-8 weeks or so in London.  Occasionally, you may be asked to work weekends and evenings to attend online or in person events but will be offered time off in lieu.

Our kitchen chef will prepare and cook meals for residents according to agreed menus. Oversees the service kitchen by managing any other members of the food preparation team, deciding what dishes to serve and adjusting orders to meet client's requests. The Community Energy Adviser will deliver energy support sessions in local communities, empowering individuals and families through workshops and one-to-one support. The focus will be on assisting those facing challenges with their energy needs by providing practical advice, support, and advocacy on energy conservation, switching providers, and accessing grants or benefits. 

Fixed term until March 2026.

Part time - 20 hours a week 

The hours for this role will be varied over shift patterns from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and may also include some Saturdays.

Location: Scope's London office and remote working is offered around meetings and workshops.

The role will require travelling in London and the surrounding area. 

The Role

In this role you will be:

• Planning and delivering engaging and informative energy support workshops within local communities, tailoring content to meet the diverse needs of attendees. 
• Providing one-to-one support to individuals requiring more in-depth assistance, including conducting home energy assessments and offering tailored advice. 
• Collaborating with local organisations and stakeholders to identify and reach out to communities and individuals who would benefit most from energy advice and support. 
• Developing and distributing educational materials on energy saving, bill management, and the benefits of renewable energy sources. 
• Tracking and evaluating the impact of community sessions and one-to-one interventions, adjusting strategies to improve outreach and support effectiveness. 
• Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of energy sector developments, including changes in legislation, available grants, and best practices in energy conservation.

• It is essential that you have a good working knowledge of IT including Microsoft Office Products 
• You will bring drive and enthusiasm to your role and can demonstrate that you care passionately about improving the lives of disabled people and their families. It is desirable that you have a good knowledge of Energy and Utilities advice.

Reporting to the Head of Finance, you will be managing one Finance Assistant. Working closely with the Head of Finance overseeing all processes and controls that feed into management accounts preparation, you will also be business partnering with the Senior Leadership Team, and budget holders.

Key duties and responsibilities will include:

• Oversee day-to-day financial operations, working with Finance Assistant to ensure all financial transactions are recorded accurately.
• Lead the completion of month-end processes including preparation and posting of journals, balance sheet reconciliations including restricted fund reconciliations, and maintenance of control accounts.
• Assist the Head of Finance on drafting management accounts and cashflow

• Support the Head of Finance in the preparation of year-end financial statements in line with the Charity SORP and statutory requirements.
• Act as the lead point of contact for the annual audit process, liaising with external auditors and preparing audit schedules and documentation as required.
• Act as a key contact for the charity's banking, payment platforms (Stripe, CAF, Paypal etc) and financial systems (Sage).
• Monitor bank accounts, oversee and authorise payment uploads, and ensure accurate reporting via banking platforms.
• Provide reconciliations for fundraising between CRM (Beacon) and Financial System (Sage).
• Lead and empower the Finance Assistant

Candidates applying for this role must have the following:

• Qualified by Experience (QBE), a recognised CCAB qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA) or working towards a recognised Finance qualification
• Producing monthly or quarterly management accounts and providing suitable narrative as required
• Supporting or leading on aspects of the year-end processes and/ or the annual audit, including producing year-end schedules, accounts and liaising with the auditors
• Ability to build strong relationships with budget holders and being able to challenge them in a compassionate and respectful manner

WMUK is looking for a passionate and experienced nurse to bring their specialist haematology expertise to our small but ambitious charity team.
You’ll have a background in caring for people living with blood cancer, and ideally, experience or knowledge of supporting those with Waldenstrom’s macroglobulinaemia (WM).

As the only UK charity who solely focus on WM, we have big plans to expand and evolve our support services. Reporting to our Chief Nursing Officer, and working closely with our Community Support Navigator, you will play a central role in evolving and delivering a support programme that meets the clinical and holistic needs of WM patients, their families, and friends.

A key part to this role will be managing the UK’s only dedicated support line for people affected by WM. You’ll provide guidance, emotional support, and practical help to the 4,000 people living with WM and their loved ones – helping them understand their diagnosis, prepare for appointments, and ultimately feel empowered to live well with their condition.

You will also be leading the development and launch of The WMUK Support centre, an innovative new online service, bringing WM specialists together to offer tailored, holistic support across the UK.
