About the role

This role within our external affairs team focuses on securing impact for our work through the management and delivery of effective communications, events, campaigns and public affairs work.

This varied role involves management of L&W’s digital communications, press and media work, stakeholder relations and events throughout the year. The role also involves supporting the delivery of L&W’s flagship campaign, Get the Nation Learning, and supporting L&W’s public affairs work. The postholder will work closely with the senior management and research and development teams to develop and deliver effective communications and influencing strategies, and to support fundraising through sponsorship of our events and other communications activities. The role involves working with our team in Wales who lead on campaigns and activities in Wales.

Duties and Responsibilities

Communications

• Secure press and media coverage for L&W’s work, including proactively identifying opportunities to promote our work, responding to press and media enquiries, and working with colleagues to launch research reports and other outputs.
•  Lead the development of regular and ad-hoc external communications, including press releases, newsletters and marketing communications.
•  Manage our social media channels and website, producing regular, high-quality content.
•  Ensure all activities are monitored and evaluated to assess impact and to inform future work.

Events

• Manage the planning and delivery of L&W’s in-person and online events, including our annual Employment and Skills Convention.
• Work with internal and external colleagues to develop content for L&W’s events, including securing high-profile speakers.

• Ensure all activities are monitored and evaluated to assess impact and to inform future work.

Campaigns

• Support the delivery of Get the Nation Learning, including national awards, Get the Nation Learning Week, and regional adult learning awards.

• Support the planning and delivery of L&W’s public affairs activities, with a focus on UK Parliament, UK Government, Mayoral Combined Authorities, and local government in England, in order to raise our profile and deliver impact.
• Undertake regular public affairs activities, including: horizon scanning and planning for upcoming parliamentary activity; writing to Ministers and MPs; coordinating parliamentary briefings, parliamentary questions and consultation responses; and other policy influencing opportunities.

About the role 

The Campaign & Programme Lead: Climate & Health supports health workers to campaign for just and proportionate action on climate change, working closely with our Movement Organiser and other colleagues. Currently our work focuses on the intersection of climate and housing, working to end the public health crisis of fuel poverty and poor-quality homes. In particular this role is responsible for national advocacy and campaigning on fuel poverty and housing, supporting members to organise in their local communities, and being a key part in the Homes for Health campaign team.

The role involves holding Medact’s key knowledge base on climate and health issues. You will build relationships across the health community and wider climate movement, from establishment institutions to frontline workers and grassroots groups. 

About you

This is a skilled role but you don’t need to have had a job in an NGO before or be a professional campaigner to be right for it. You might have worked with your local community to campaign on a social justice or health issue that you care about. Or, you might be a health worker who has seen the impact of these issues on your patients and wants to challenge the systems that drive inequity and marginalisation. 

You’ll have a strong understanding of power and how to work with others to create pressure for change. You need to be a great communicator, able to build trusting relationships with Medact members, academics, partner organisations and community groups. You’ll have an understanding of how digital communications compliment campaigning and an eye for a good media story.

About you and the role

This is a pivotal role, at a pivotal moment for us. We are entering a critical growth phase, which includes rapidly expanding our own operations and managing significant external partnership. As Head of Finance & Systems, you will be accountable for ensuring we have the right systems and structures in place to grow at pace without detriment to good governance.

The purpose of this role is to lead on our finance strategy, and ensure all of our systems, reporting and processes are helping to drive forward the charity and deliver on our objectives at scale. You will work closely with the Chief Executive and Directors to ensure that financial planning is effective and supported by accurate data analysis. You will report directly to Trustees as required and ensure that the highest standards of transparency and probity are maintained. 

You will be joining the team during a period of growth in the size and complexity of our delivery. We currently have 24 employees and anticipate growing significantly in the next twelve months. You will have a crucial role in shaping our systems and processes to ensure we can scale effectively, both our existing programmes and a new membership-based programme that is in development. We’re looking for an experienced finance professional with an interest in effectively using technology and systems to drive efficiency, without compromising on accuracy or compliance. 

You will oversee all financial administration, ensuring this is carried out proficiently and in line with all legal and regulatory requirements, including ultimate responsibility for ensuring that all statutory filings are made accurately and on time. Your role will also encompass ensuring that we operate within legal & regulatory frameworks and stay up to date with changes in relevant legislation.

Key responsibilities:

• Developing a comprehensive financial strategy that supports the delivery of the charity’s objectives and activities

• Developing our systems strategy, including reviewing suitability of our current systems (Quickbooks for accountancy, Beacon CRM, PLEO for expenses management, Survey Monkey for data collection etc. ) and ensuring optimal use of systems, maximising automation, and using AI where appropriate.

• Constantly seeking to develop and improve the organisation’s financial systems, policies and procedures to promote dynamic, best practice and up-to-date application of tools, systems and approaches

• Leading and developing the Finance and Office Manager and ensuring effective support from the external book-keeping team.

• Lead on creation of the annual budget, working closely with Directors.

• Advising the Chief Executive, team and Trustees, ensuring that benefits and risks of decisions are fully considered and fit with the overall financial strategy

• Oversee sound financial administration, management and governance across the organisation, ensuring robust financial controls in place and operating effectively.

• Provide leadership and guidance to all things finance related, providing mentoring and support to the team, and coaching on financial awareness. 

• Accountability for monitoring that the organisation’s services are, and will, run to budget, supporting budget holders and reporting promptly on risks 

• Have ultimate oversight of the external audit and production of the statutory accounts, supported in delivery of this by the Finance & Office Manager

• Oversee production of management accounts and bespoke financial reports, including accurate forecasting, incisive analysis and accessible narrative commentary, ensuring decision-makers have the information they need. 

• Forecasting cash flow and managing the treasury position.

• Support the Partnerships & Impact team and Programme Managers with financial inputs to funding proposals and ensure restricted funds are used in compliance with grant conditions.

• Oversight of finance, governance and basic HR administration, supporting the Finance and Office Manager with high profile or complex queries, seeking specialist advice on financial or compliance matters as required

• Ensuring GDPR compliance across the organisation

• Leading an effective risk management process.

• Ensuring the organisation’s compliance with charity law, in accordance with the Charity Commission in England & Wales and all financial reporting requirements.

Skills & experience:

• You have interest and belief in our mission, to improve kids’ health through improving food and food education in schools

• You have full or partial qualification through an accredited accountancy body 

• You have experience in a senior finance role (e.g., Director, Head of) in any sector, and some experience within a finance function in the 3rd sector (in particular familiarity with Charities SORP and experience of administering restricted funds).

We are looking for an Individual Giving Manager for a 10 month maternity cover role starting from September 2025 until July 2026, to take responsibility for the operational planning and delivery of public fundraising programmes in line with agreed strategic fundraising goals, to grow individual giving income and the number of individual supporters.

The Role

This role will be responsible for leading & managing fundraising data, and strategic oversight of fundraising data systems and processes, managing a team to employ process efficiencies and improve data quality ensuring seamless integration between CRM systems and external platforms to drive income generation across the full spectrum of the donor data landscape and deliver fundraising operations. About the Role

We are looking for a highly motivated, organised and experienced sports and challenge fundraiser, to deliver a review of our sports and challenge events programme, identifying new opportunities to grow our income.

Working closely with the Head of Individual Giving and Fundraising Campaigns, you will develop strategies and bring new ideas to grow and develop this programme, potentially including community events – to deliver significant growth in income over the next 5 years.

In this feasibility review, you will analyse our past performance including in well-established, externally organised activities such as marathons and third-party challenge events, and our partner events such as the Terry Fox Runs. You will also assess the feasibility of developing and launching our own-branded events.

During the review, you will line-manage the Sports and Challenge Events Officer to maintain and deliver our current successful events programme and work together on the feasibility review to identify new opportunities for innovation and ways to increase participation. 

You will build key relationships across the department and work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation, to identify and work through new ways to grow participation and increase fundraising income.

At the end of the review, you will present your findings, making recommendations on the key components for a future sports and challenge programme that reflect our ambitions for growth, with plans to deliver it.

This is initially a fixed term project contract. There is potential for the role to become permanent dependent on the direction and outcomes of the review.

Key Responsibilities

In this role you will lead a review of our sports and challenge events programme, including third-party activities such as marathons and challenge events, using data to analyse past performance (income and ROI) and assess the feasibility for developing our own-brand sports, challenge or community events – whilst maintaining the success our current programme of activities.

You will:

• Review, develop and prepare plans to deliver a profitable, engaging and effective annual programmes of sports, challenge and community event opportunities.
• Be responsible for managing the annual available sports marketing budget and contributing to annual budget planning.
• Create innovative new sports and challenge events, designed to attract and retain supporters and develop plans to launch these on time, and to budget.
• Work with Communications and Digital teams to develop comprehensive marketing plans to promote our events, secure participants and increase levels of engagement.
• Work with your team to set targets and monitor progress of fundraisers – and manage their participation in cost-effective ways, to maximise return on investment.
• Support your team to provide excellent stewardship and supporter experience, with pre and post event contact, to encourage repeat participation.
• Collaborate with Development teams to cross sell and identify leads for fundraisers from other areas of fundraising, such as major gifts, corporate, appeals and legacies.
• Be responsible for managing and the personal development of your team, to deliver their campaigns and activities, to agreed objectives and KPIs.

The Campaigns By You platform is the part of 38 Degrees where the general public and partner organisations can use our free software to run campaigns on anything from saving their local community spaces to major national issues.
