The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is looking to recruit a Communications and Media Officer to join our small and driven team supporting young people aged 8-24, who are living through and beyond cancer.
Use your storytelling, editorial, copywriting and creative skills to help inspire young people to join our lifechanging trips and generate the fundraising support we need so the door is open for more young people to benefit from our adventures.
No sailing experience or knowledge is required, just a passion for applying your talents to make a real difference in young people believing in their brighter future after treatment for cancer.
You might be a graduate journalist, PR account executive, communications assistant, or someone with equivalent experience who is ready to take your next step in a varied and rewarding role with one of the country’s leading young people’s cancer charities.
What you will do
A year-in-the-life of our Largs-based Communications and Media Officer has two distinct parts. October to April - where it’s all about getting the word out there to support fundraising and encouraging young people to sign up for our life-changing adventures. Then it’s the summer - May to September - when the magic happens and you’re around the trips, interviewing young people and telling their stories. You can go sailing on the trips too!
You will be responsible for identifying story opportunities year-round, and writing press releases, media advisories or editorial content to pitch those stories to a range of media outlets, from local newspapers and regional broadcasters to national, charity, marine and other specialist publications, and facilitating inbound requests for interviews or other profile-raising opportunities.
You will serve as our go-to copywriter for print, online and digital marketing materials as well as writing other articles and feature content as requested. This includes responsibility for writing and overseeing the production of our annual in-house publication, Inspire.
You will also work closely with the social media team, gathering (and if you have the experience, producing) multimedia content for our digital and online platforms. There will be wider responsibilities across the communications team too.
Key responsibilities and duties
Copywriting
- All editorial and copy creation (internal and external requirements/requests).
- Organisation-wide marketing collateral process management and copy support.
- Inspire – content planning, writing and overseeing production (Sept-Apr).
- Trust News (monthly e-newsletter) stories.
- Website – regular news stories and copy updates as required and/or requested.
- Internal copy oversight and/or proofreading, including but not limited to young person onboarding and
fundraising communications.
Media & PR
- Identifying cross-organisation year-round storytelling and profile-raising opportunities and proactive media outreach (local/regional/specialist/marine).
- Facilitate all inbound interview and other media requests including setting up interviews and briefing
interviewees. - Facilitate Largs-based PR and/or experiential requests.
- Media monitoring, recording and reporting (Google Alerts).
- Onclusive PR & media platform – relationship and media list management.
Trip season (all of the above plus...)
- Interviewing young people and seasonal team (volunteers, skippers and trip leads) to gather stories and content for PR and/or social media.
- For Largs-organised trips…
- photo management (sort, uploading and image tagging)
- media phone management
- Social media posts (including photos and/or short-form video) in liaison with the Senior Digital and
Social Media Lead. - Wider Largs team support.
Wider comms function
- Year-round story management including case studies and website updates.
- Campaigns – ideas generation and support with delivery (with comms team)
- Sad News process management – ensuring respectful use of photos/videos.
- Largs office/marina branding – organisation and coordination as required.
- Crisis comms - part of incident response media team.
- Looking for new opportunities/platforms to raise our profile.

This is a senior strategic fundraising position, with responsibility for securing high value, transformational corporate partnerships that deliver significant long term income and wider strategic value.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the acquisition of strategically significant and transformational corporate partnerships.
- Identify, develop and convert high-value opportunities with national, regional and high-potential organisations.
- Build and manage a strong pipeline focused on substantial, multi-year income growth.
- Develop bespoke and commercially compelling partnership propositions aligned with both corporate and charity objectives.
- Build and influence relationships with C-suite executives, senior decision makers and corporate stakeholders.
- Lead complex partnership negotiations to secure significant financial and strategic commitments.
- Secure and develop six and seven figure corporate partnerships and multi-year strategic collaborations.
- Represent the charity as a senior ambassador at corporate meetings, sector events and networking opportunities.
- Use market intelligence, sector insight and competitor awareness to identify emerging opportunities.
- Provide strategic support and guidance across the wider corporate partnerships function where appropriate.
- Manage high value opportunities, forecasting, pipeline development and financial reporting.
You will have:
- A demonstrable track record of securing six figure and multi year corporate partnerships, contracts or strategic relationships.
- Experience engaging, influencing and negotiating with senior executives, C-suite leaders and corporate decision makers.
- Strong business development, prospecting and relationship management skills, with a proven ability to convert opportunities into long term partnerships.
- Experience developing and delivering compelling pitches, proposals and presentations to senior audiences.
- Excellent influencing, networking, negotiation and communication skills.
- Experience creating bespoke partnership propositions and leading complex negotiations.
- Strong commercial acumen and the ability to identify market opportunities and translate them into sustainable income.
- Experience developing high value pipelines, forecasting income and managing opportunities through to conversion.
- The ability to work strategically and independently in a target driven, high performance environment.
- Confidence and credibility when representing an organisation externally at a senior level.
- A proactive, motivated and results focused approach.
Experience within corporate fundraising, strategic partnerships, sponsorship, sales, business development or commercial relationship management would be highly desirable, as would experience working with national brands or large corporate organisations and an understanding of CSR, ESG or purpose led partnerships.
Salary & Benefits

- Performance-related bonus: £3,000 per annum, linked to agreed income and programme milestones

About the role
You will be playing a pivotal role in the senior leadership of the fundraising directorate, working alongside the Head of Relationship Fundraising and Partnerships. You will help to shape the ambitious future for fundraising at East Anglian Air Ambulance, delivering the Future Proofed Giving strategy, growing income, and developing a brilliant team of fundraisers, stewardship specialists and engagement experts.
Key responsibilities include:
Building a brand-new engagement, stewardship, retention and development function for the fundraising directorate including; building the team, embedding the function across the fundraising and wider teams; This function will be the beating heart of the fundraising team and ensure we can deliver our ambitious strategy.
You will specifically lead on the strategic direction of key income streams including; community fundraising, events, individual giving, prize led fundraising (lottery), in memory fundraising, gift aid and gifts in wills.
You will lead and develop, a great team who are delivering exceptional stewardship activity to retain supporters for longer and targeted marketing activity, uplift and conversion campaigns and giving the supporter a great experience.
You and the team will be planning and implementing new product, activity, events testing – from development through to implementation. Stewardship journey mapping, development, implementation and monitoring for all income streams in your remit and providing stewardship support to other fundraising functions.
You’ll bring:
Significant experience of developing successful fundraising strategies and leading and developing fundraising departments, and teams.
You will have an excellent understanding of the different fundraising disciplines you will be responsible for and one or two you might even be an expert in.
You will have been using data and insights to inform plans and activity and recent experience of using marketing techniques and channels, ideally in a fundraising setting, to engage with specific audiences.
Giving supporters a great experience will drive you and being a fan of yellow and helicopters will probably be essential.

This role will be worked a minimum of 3 days a week from our Norwich or Cambridge office and up to 2 days a week from home. The exact days worked in the office will be agreed with the successful candidate, but you must live within a commutable distance of Norwich or Cambridge.
