GiveDirectly aims to reshape international giving - and millions of lives - by enabling donors to provide capital grants directly to some of the world’s poorest people. GiveDirectly’s cash transfers stand on the shoulders of giants, backed by hundreds of high quality research studies that have documented the myriad positive impacts of cash on peoples’ lives.
GiveDirectly has been at the forefront of this evidence generation effort since we launched a decade ago. Fifteen randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of GiveDirectly’s programs are either ongoing or completed. These have covered diverse, cutting edge research questions including: the macro impact of transfers on local economies, the impact of a universal basic income, and establishing cash as a benchmark that traditional, ‘in kind’ aid interventions should beat in order to be considered cost-effective. We are increasingly seeking to integrate qualitative and quantitative approaches within individual studies to better understand how and why change happens.
These studies do not just sit on dusty shelves -- since 2018, GiveDirectly RCTs have been covered in top media outlets including: Washington Post (twice), New York Times, The Economist, Vox (several times over), Quartz, NPR (twice), DevEx, Fast Company, Axios and Wired. Delivering and disseminating research studies have become a core part of GiveDirectly’s value proposition to donors, and central to our ability to raise the revenue that enables people living in poverty to transform their own lives.
Cash transfers are at a potential inflection point: COVID-19 has amplified the challenges of bulkier in-kind aid models, and governments are deploying cash as their most common tool of assistance to vulnerable populations. This brings new research challenges and opportunities. How do we combine existing research knowledge with recent data to design high-impact programs in a new humanitarian context? How do we evaluate the impact of those programs when in-person data collection is not possible?
GiveDirectly currently operates in multiple African countries: DRC, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Morocco, Rwanda, Togo and Uganda. We have also delivered disaster response programs in the United States and the Bahamas.
About the role
We are seeking a versatile individual who can lead our research function through our next phase of growth: overseeing high quality academic research studies (e.g. managing 11 ongoing RCTs), equipping our team to design evidence-informed programs (e.g. synthesizing existing research on nutrition impacts of different cash designs), and setting the research agenda for the coming years (e.g. what are the highest priority questions to answer?).
This role requires a dynamic leader, who is animated by both the practical problem-solving needed to drive research excellence (e.g. how do we deliver robust impact research at high speed in a humanitarian setting?), and the research uptake challenge of leveraging the evidence base to maximize program impact and grow the global cash movement.
Our team is passionate about shifting the status quo with respect to how and by whom decisions are made in the aid space. We believe elevating recipient choice is critical, as are demonstrably committing to transparency around metrics and evidence. Research oversight

Ensure excellence across all external GD research studies (most of which are RCTs) through proactive project and stakeholder management across academics, research delivery partners, GD Field Operations, Field Technology and Revenue teams and funding partners.

Support the GD Field Operations teams to design and deliver robust internal (non-experimental) monitoring and evaluation of a wide range of projects, leveraging GD’s extensive routine data collection through SMS, USSD and phone surveys.

Drive evidence-informed program design within GD by synthesizing existing data and evidence in accessible formats and championing research uptake during the program design process

The post holder will support the Evolving Communities local Healthwatch teams with the design, analysis and reporting of their public engagement, research, and service evaluation functions. Population Matters (PM) is looking for an independent, self-reliant, and smart researcher to carry out a 4-5 month scoping out contract into the feasibility of developing a virtual[1] Ecological Development Economics Institute[2].
The proposed new entity would exist to develop and promote an intellectual and policy framework to challenge the traditional growth-driven economic theory as being irreconcilable with our planetary future. At its core, would be the premise that achieving a smaller human population globally will benefit people both in developed and developing countries. The Institute would draw on resources of people, intellectual capital, policy development and implementation to provide a practical service for policymakers and leaders globally.
Ending population growth alone will not secure a world in which humanity lives in harmony with nature, but it is a crucial component for reversing the current trends of deteriorating biodiversity, accelerating climate change and escalating insecurity of human communities. Yet population remains a neglected element in public policy.
It is our conclusion that economic arguments will hold greater sway with policy makers. Hence, scoping out the feasibility of a new economics institute offering analysis and advice to policymakers globally. A key principle is that EDEI (name TBC) will not focus solely on developing nations or post-colonial nations – but look in both directions: developing countries (with their issues) and developed countries (with different issues).
NB - The proposed EDEI is not about funding or delivering SRHR family planning directly. That is the role, area of expertise, and responsibility of other agencies and national governments.

ABOUT THE ROLE:
As Campaigner on migrant labour rights, you will lead the development and implementation of campaigning efforts aiming to strengthen the rights of migrant workers in the Gulf, including a focus on labour reforms in Qatar in the run up to the 2022 World Cup, and also in migrants' countries of origin.
You will develop and implement effective campaigns to highlight ongoing labour abuse in Qatar, other countries in the Gulf and migrant workers' countries of origin. You will build partnerships with a range of actors including other non-governmental organisations, trade unions and sporting bodies. You will work internally to mobilise the Amnesty movement and its supporters to take action to promote change. You will be responsible for the delivery of our policy, research and parliamentary work. As part of your role you will gather evidence from our casework and elsewhere to prepare briefings, papers and research reports about the harm caused by immigration detention to alert the Home Office, NHS England, medical professional bodies, parliamentarians, and the courts to ongoing issues.
Influenced by our robust and unique evidence base, our credibility and effectiveness, as well as the expertise of our staff and volunteers, Medical Justice enjoys excellent collaboration with lawyers, other NGO’s in the field, medical professionals and parliamentarians. Medical Justice is the only NGO consulted by NHS England on its Service Specifications for healthcare provision in Immigration Removal Centres (IRCs). In 2019 Medical Justice became the secretariat for the newly formed All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Immigration Detention. In 2020 Medical Justice was granted Core Participant status in the Brook House IRC Public Inquiry which provides what is probably the best prospect there has ever been to expose ongoing systemic failures in immigration detention.

Are you a confident researcher who would like to use your skills to amplify the voices and experience of Deaf and disabled people in Barnet? Do you have your own lived experience of disability (which could include a long term condition or mental health issues)?
We are looking for an enthusiastic self-starter to take on an exciting two year project to understand disabled people’s experience of the social care system. Using surveys and interviews, and supported by a steering group of users who you will work with closely, you will build a picture of how much people feel the support they receive is helping them achieve independence and the outcomes they aspire to. You’ll use that information to build reports and recommendations, culminating in a conference to share learning and hear from other areas about how to build best practice in support and co-production.
A natural relationship builder, you will be able to adjust your communication style to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, from users to senior council staff to other London DDPOs. You’ll also be able to write clearly, persuasively and accessibly, creating reports and information that people want to read. You’ll also be able to advocate effectively for greater co-production and make a positive case for change, sensitive to the perspective of a range of stakeholders but able to find solutions and suggestions that build user involvement.
You’ll hold overall responsibility for our user voice work, overseeing the work of our User Voice Lead and ensuring that there is effective shared learning between different projects. Supervisory experience would therefore be an asset, but we are also open to applications from talented disabled people looking to move into their first management role. Confidence to conduct high-quality research independently with minimal supervision is essential, however.
This is a great opportunity to create a really impactful piece of work and influence thinking on approaches to Adult Social Care. The work is Barnet-based, but we hope it will be influential far beyond the borough. About the role
Crisis is looking for a Senior Evaluation Officer to join the Research and Evaluation team. This is an exciting opportunity to lead on evaluation work as part of a wider strategy to measure the difference Crisis makes towards ending homelessness, and to support the organisation to make evidence-driven decisions. About you
The successful candidate will support a fast paced Research and Evaluation team to further improve the ways in which we monitor and evaluate our services, programmes and activities, including leading on the monitoring and evaluation of Crisis’ grants programmes.
This is a great opportunity for a candidate with extensive experience of conducting, managing and commissioning quantitative and qualitative research or evaluation to join the team and contribute to Crisis’ aim of ending homelessness. The National Housing Federation (NHF) is the voice of housing associations in England. We are the trade body to almost 600 housing associations, who have grown from philanthropic roots to provide 2.6 million homes to around 6 million people.
Housing associations are not for profit social landlords, and are the largest providers of homes for social rents in the country. Housing associations build around a quarter of new homes every year, including almost all new social housing.
We are recruiting two new policy officers to our 11-strong policy team.
In these role you will help policy development and influencing across our broad range of policy priorities. You will work closely with our members - drawing on their frontline expertise and experience - to shape and respond to government policy. You will build relationships with members, external stakeholders and government officials on behalf of the NHF.
You will not necessarily be a policy expert in housing yet, but you will be passionate about social housing and the role of housing associations in helping solve the housing crisis. You will have some experience of policy analysis and development, or be able to demonstrate the skills necessary to deliver this. You will be comfortable representing the NHF to stakeholders in Government, our members and elsewhere. You will be a strong collaborator, able to work with colleagues across the organization to deliver on our policy priorities.
