Job description

The Finance function consists of five members of staff, led by the Finance Manager and including a Finance role in Ireland.  The function as a whole reports into the Head of Finance & Services who in turn reports directly to the Executive Director and the Board of MSF UK.

The Finance function provides a key support function to all the other departments within both MSF UK and MSF Ireland. This includes financial reporting and analysis to relevant stakeholders, assistance with budgeting and planning, organisational internal controls, and procurement/payment processing.  We also have reporting responsibilities to the Management Team, the Board of Trustees, and to the wider MSF movement.  The function is a small, but dynamic team with exciting ambitions on how we would meet both the current and future needs of MSF UK and MSF Ireland given their rapid growth in income and associated complexity.

As a critical part of those ambitions, we are currently undergoing a large Finance process and system change project (“Project Eureka”) across both MSF UK and MSF IE, with the aim to go live from 1 January 2021.  As well as a dedicated Project Manager, we are planning to resource this project using our existing staff team, particularly our Finance Manager and Management Accountant.  This role has therefore been created to cover aspects of both roles in order to free up resource for Project Eureka.

Our current financial management systems include our in-house Purchase Order system, our automated payments system (V1) and our accounting package (PS Financials)

The Senior Accountant role essentially assists the Finance Manager in the smooth running of the day to day Finance functions in MSF UK and MSF Ireland.  We are seeing this role as leading particularly on the budgeting and reforecasting process, the production and analysis of the management accounts, as well as playing a leading role with the financial statements and year end audits.

However, this is a broad role with the ultimate aim to support the finance function as a whole.  What is therefore required most of all is an understanding of the overall responsibilities of the Finance function, and the desire and flexibility to work as an integral member of the team to ensure we are able to carry out those responsibilities.

This would be an ideal role for a fully qualified and experienced charity finance professional motivated by an interesting and varied workload, as well as working with a team to contribute tangible impact to an organisation during a critical period of change.

Qualifications and experience

  • Fully qualified accountant - CIMA, ACA, ACCA or other generally recognised accountancy qualification
  • Experience working in a similar role and in a similar sized organisation.
  • Proven significant experience of using automated accounting packages and purchase ledger systems. Excellent working knowledge and experience of using Microsoft Office (in particular using Excel at a high to advanced level)
  • Knowledge of financial procedures and processes and familiarity with the use of management information systems for financial management
  • Experience with financial statements in accordance with UK GAAP and the Charity SORP (FRS102). Experience of playing significant role in the statutory audit process of a similar sized UK charity.

Personal qualities

  • Ability to work mainly unsupervised to deliver against agreed priorities within broad guidelines and make decisions/recommendations that have implications beyond Finance.
  • Team player with the interpersonal skills and flexibility necessary to work within a small team and thereby contribute to the achievement of team objectives during a period of significant change.  Ability to proactively plan workload around others, as well as be adaptable where necessary.
  • Ability to communicate technical information, adapting style to target audiences, to develop shared understanding of main issues. Ability to initiate, develop and maintain a range of professional relationship both within and outside MSF UK.
  • Keen eye for detail and a high level of accuracy
  • Proven ability and willingness to work under pressure to process high volume of work while meeting tight deadlines
  • A systematic and organised approach with an ability to follow things through
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Commitment to the aims and values of Médecins Sans Frontières
