The purpose of your role

We are looking for a proactive policy and corporate affairs professional to join the Police Now team and play a key role in shaping understanding of our programmes, build support amongst stakeholders, and lead the conversation on police reform and culture change. 

Police Now’s mission is to transform communities, reduce crime and increase public confidence in policing.  You will be instrumental in identifying and offering great opportunities to showcase the best of Police Now's work with Ministers, officials, MPs, Peers, committees, All-Party Parliamentary Groups, and other policy stakeholders and influencers.  You will use your skills in advocacy and effective communication to increase awareness of and support for what we deliver, and be an effective partner to the Government demonstrating delivery of their 13,000 neighbourhood policing pledge and the difference good local policing makes to communities.

What you’ll do – the key responsibilities

•Establish yourself within Police Now as a source of expert political advice and guidance in handling sensitive issues and relationships, working to protect and enhance our reputation. 

•Be curious about police reform, be actively contributing on external thinking about this and ensure PN colleagues are kept abreast of key developments.

•Maintain the day to day relationship with the Home Office including organising meetings, submissions, paperwork and evaluations.

•Provide expert policy advice to officials at the Home Office, other Government Departments, and Parliamentarians on the work of Police Now through contributions to White Papers and Committee Investigations. 

•Be proactive in looking for opportunities for Police Now such as organising visits, participating in roundtables, and playing an active role in relevant conferences.

•Ensure that Police Now fulfils its obligations to Government in return for public investment and is responsive to the needs of the Home Office and other organisations. You will provide accurate information for answers to Parliamentary Questions in a timely manner, input for Ministerial briefings and correspondence, and advice on police and skills policy issues to the Government as appropriate.

What you’ll need – the person specification

•Experience of influencing and advocating within a policy and public affairs environment, you will be confident in communicating with senior stakeholders.

•Engage Ministers, MPs, Mayors, Police and Crime Commissioners and their teams in a way that enhances Police Nows reputation as an expert, insight-led organisation with a strong record of delivery that represents excellent value-for-money.

•You will have a strong understanding of Westminster, Whitehall and the Mayoralities and build good working relationships with key decision-makers.  Some experience of media handling around public policy issues is desirable as you will work closely with the Media and Communications team at Police Now.

•Essential skills are the ability to write well, communicate effectively and be confident in engaging senior stakeholders.  A demonstrable interest or background in policing or related public services would be of assistance in working with internal stakeholders.

•Above all, you must demonstrate for a passion the Police Now mission, be proactive in identifying opportunities to share Police Now's impact, and be a great team player.

General Overview of Role

The post-holder will be responsible for writing bid applications within Combat Stress. This will include:

• Support the development and delivery of Combat Stress's bid writing under the leadership of the Director of Fundraising (DoF) and Head of Trusts and Foundations (HTF), in order to support our role as a specialist UK-wide provider of mental health services to veterans with complex mental health needs.
• With guidance and support from DoF and HoTF contribute to the various stages of a bid or tender process.
• Support the team in managing service contracts.
• Ensure compliance with the business development framework and governance processes - with support from DoF and HoTF.

Main Duties and Key Responsibilities

• Complete bid writing in support of the business development agenda of Combat Stress, working with all departments in promoting our services to attract new business and supporting cost-effective service delivery.
• Contribute to our revenue generation agenda by owning and contributing to bid documents such as mobilisation or communication plans.
• Support the assessment of the healthcare market within which we operate, to ensure we are best placed to achieve growth and have the appropriate strategies to mitigate risks
• Support the development, monitoring and delivery of business developments plans, systems and processes in line with our strategy and targets
• Work across departments in order to adhere to the full service specification of the bid or tender.
• Work with the DoF to develop existing partnership arrangements and to develop the case to support new service and business partnerships, commercial ventures, and creative contract solutions to further our strategic aims.
• Manage the "bid/no bid" process to lead our responses to ITTs, lead on bid writing and project management of bid submissions
• Produce reports and proposals, including spreadsheets, involve bids for additional funding from commissioners.
• Review and refine all business development processes and templates to maintain "fit for purpose"

Contract Management

• Assist with the development, monitoring, management, and review of contracts.

Communication

• Contribute to the communication strategy within and external to the Charity
• Support the team on any other projects as requested by the DoF

General responsibilities

• Ensure data collection in general is kept up to date, in accordance with legislation and the policies of the Charity, and incident reports are completed in accordance with the policies of the Charity.

We are looking for a permanent and full-time member of staff to help develop and manage RSTMH’s profile within tropical medicine and global health. We need a passionate and creative communicator who can play a key role in meeting our communications objectives. This role is office-based in central London, with the option to work from home on Mondays.

RSTMH is a membership society formed in 1907, with around 1,800 members and Fellows in over 100 countries. We work to improve tropical medicine and global health by enabling and promoting research, sharing knowledge and convening networks through our members and Fellows and beyond. The Communications Manager will have the opportunity to develop and enhance RSTMH’s reputation as a credible and trusted voice in tropical medicine and global health.

This is a wide-ranging and exciting role. You will lead on implementing the organisation’s communications strategy, working with the leadership team to ensure it meets the aims of the wider RSTMH strategy. You’ll maintain and further develop the website and social media platforms, build links with media contacts, and source, commission and develop content. You’ll manage relationships with key suppliers, including website developers, strategic partners, digital media and creative agencies. You’ll also be responsible for delivering RSTMH’s newsletters to our members and Fellows, and global network of supporters.

We’re looking for someone ambitious and solutions-focused with a passion for communications to deliver creative and innovative content. You’ll have the ability to engage people in the technical areas of our work as well as the nature of the societal problems and context we’re seeking to improve, and establish analytical systems to monitor our progress.

The Role

• Implement RSTMH’s communications strategy, in line with the wider organisational goals
• Full ownership of the website, including content updating and monitoring for consistency and currency, managing any development work and integration with other systems
• Manage social media channels for RSTMH, and develop strategies to engage wider networks
• Accountable for our joint venture website, grow: including developing a strategy for updating and maintaining the listings and income generation through advertising and/or sponsored posts
• Commission, source, write, edit and proofread engaging and relevant content for the website and social media channels, providing editorial support as required and building a network of expert contributors
• Track engagement across media channels and email marketing, and produce monthly reports for leadership team showing activity

Essential experience

• 5 years’ experience within a digital communication role
• 3 years’ experience developing and maintaining websites and social media for a campaign, cause or organisation
• Proven experience working in an editorial capacity, developing compelling copy for online audiences, with a varied portfolio of written work
• Experience of digital content creation, commissioning and management
• Proficiency in HTML newsletter creation, working to tight deadlines, collaborating with other departments, and using mail clients
• Experience of managing suppliers, partners and contributors
• Familiarity with design software for creating digital assets, such as Canva
• Knowledge of CRM databases
