About the role

UK Feminista is looking for people committed to feminism and women’s equality to join our volunteer Board of Directors.

Founded in 2010, UK Feminista is a charitable organisation working for a society free from sexism and violence against women and girls. We campaign for systemic change so that women can enjoy their rights as enshrined in the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. We exist to tackle the root causes of sex inequality. Our core programmes are combating commercial sexual exploitation; and tackling sexism and sexual harassment in education. Please read more about our programmes of work on our website.

The role of the Board of Directors is to:  

• Take legal and financial responsibility in order to safeguard the assets and the continuity of UK Feminista.  

• Be satisfied that financial information is accurate and that financial management systems and controls are robust and defensible.  

• Ensure that UK Feminista complies with its Articles of Association, company law and other relevant legislation and regulations.  

• Ensure that the policies and practices of UK Feminista meets the organisation’s needs, are in keeping with its charitable objects and strive to achieve best practise.

• Further the charitable objects of UK Feminista.  

In carrying out the collective responsibilities of the Board, the role of the individual Director is to:  

• Follow UK Feminista’s Code of Conduct at all times.  

• Declare conflicts of interest and exercise confidentiality and independent judgement at all times.  

• Contribute relevant knowledge and expertise to the organisation’s activities at the request of the Director.  

• Be a proactive advocate for UK Feminista.  

• Act as an ambassador to UK Feminista, including building the profile of the organisation; seeking relevant fundraising connections and support; and representing the organisation at meetings and acting as spokesperson when requested by the Director.  

• Contribute to the development of the organisational strategy through providing support, constructive challenge and ideas, in collaboration with the Director.

• Strong commitment to the aims of UK Feminista.  

• Strong understanding of sex inequality and commercial sexual exploitation.  

• An ability to work effectively as part of a team.  

• An ability and willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to complete Board Member duties. 

• An ability to think strategically and exercise good judgement.  

• An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of being a Board Member. 

• An understanding of and commitment to upholding the Board’s governance role as distinct from the operational role of staff.  

• Knowledge, skills and experience in a field or practice of relevance to UK Feminista’s activities.

We are seeking particular expertise in these areas: 

• Data protection 

• Finance and fundraising – in particular, fundraising areas outside of grants, and strategic partnership development

Level of commitment 

UK Feminista is a small organisation, so this is a hands-on Board Member role. As well as four 90-minute online board meetings a year and attending an annual in-person Away Day in London, Board Members attend additional adhoc meetings, events and provide organisational support as needed. 

UK Feminista is a non-profit company limited by guarantee. No one on the Board of Directors is personally liable.

We’re looking for friendly and welcoming volunteers to join us, who are enthusiastic and excited to help our clients and supporters. Whether you’re a confident communicator who wants to engage with your local community or a reliable and honest volunteer looking to help us sort our donations, we’d love to have you on board as a Donation Support Volunteer!

Donation Support Volunteers will volunteer within the BCWA Fundraising Team, assisting with their day-to-day activity, whether that’s helping sort our valuable donations, tidying and keeping our donation cupboards clean, supporting the team with tasks or helping with collections in the community.  Fundraising at BCWA can be a busy, high-pressure environment – our volunteers are integral at our busiest times of the year to ensure our clients and services get the support they need.

Volunteering with our Fundraising Team might look like:

• Supporting with processing donations – including moving and handling and carrying a variety of items.
• Helping keep our storage areas for donations clean and tidy.
• Getting involved with your local community and coming up with creative new ideas for fundraising drives.
• Assisting with collections if you are comfortable and have a valid UK Driving License.
• Being an advocate for BCWA!

To keep everyone informed, supported, and working towards shared goals, all fundraising volunteers are invited to join our quarterly team meeting. These sessions will:

• Share upcoming events and new fundraising opportunities
• Give updates on current projects and campaign progress
• Offer a clear focus for the months ahead
• Provide space for volunteers to share ideas, feedback, and experiences
• Strengthen team connection and celebrate achievements

You’ll always know what we’re aiming for and how your contribution fits into the bigger picture.

As a BCWA Donation Support Volunteer, you’ll get:

References

If offered a volunteer role, we will seek 2 references. Ideally, one of these should be your current or last employer, however we understand this isn’t always possible. We ask that one of your referees has known you at least a year.

Examples of references could include:

• a professional from your centre of study, for instance a teacher, lecturer or headteacher
• GP or health visitor
• a character reference from a person who knows you (so familial relations or partners)
• a civil servant from a government agency
• a bank manager

DBS

All volunteer roles are subject to DBS checks at the relevant level.

A women led grassroots charity in southern India is seeking a volunteer accountant to strengthen accounting systems, reporting, budgeting and finance team confidence.

The organisation works with women, children and marginalised communities through programmes focused on empowerment, health advocacy, childcare, education and residential care for children affected by HIV/AIDS.

Much of the organisation’s accounting remains manual and paper based, and financial reports are generally prepared only when requested by donors.

The volunteer will review current finance processes, assess use of accounting software, support budgeting and cashflow tools, introduce simple monthly management accounts, improve donor reporting and provide mentoring to the local finance team.

This would suit a supportive, hands on volunteer who enjoys working closely with smaller grassroots organisations.

Free accommodation, weekday breakfast and lunch, and airport transfers from Madurai Airport can be arranged.
