The Sociological Review Foundation, a registered charity that exists to advance public education on the subject of sociology and related disciplines, is looking to appoint an individual to join the Board of Trustees during an exciting time of organisational growth and development.
Our work is partly supported by Gift Aid donations from The Sociological Review journal. As publishing models change and royalty income declines, the Foundation is working to diversify its income through donations and other sources of support so that it can continue delivering its charitable work.
We have therefore developed a range of income-generating initiatives, including a ticketed annual public lecture, paid podcast production and hosting packages, and specialist training workshops. These initiatives are intended to supplement our Gift Aid income and help ensure that we can continue to offer most of our activities and resources free of charge.
What We’re Looking For
We are inviting expressions of interest from individuals with experience in marketing and communications who can help us reach and engage existing and new audiences across our work. This will include advising on the promotion of our income-generating events, training workshops and other initiatives.
As a very small charity, we are looking for a trustee who understands the practical realities of working with limited staff time and resources. The successful candidate will provide strategic guidance and, where appropriate, practical insight into areas such as market positioning, audience engagement and effective, proportionate communications.
Your responsibilities as a trustee will include the following:
This is not a paid position; however, travel and any childcare expenses while on trustee business will be covered in line with our expenses claim policy.
Previous experience as a charity trustee is desirable but not essential. You will receive training on the duties and responsibilities of trustees at the beginning of your appointment.
To apply, please send your CV and a one-page covering letter to Operations Director Attila Szanto, outlining your interest in the role and what you would bring to it. The deadline for expressions of interest is the 24th of August 2026.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to get involved in an impactful charity making a tangible difference to the lives of refugees here in the UK.
Our work is simple – we refurbish unwanted bikes and donate them to refugees and people seeking asylum, many living on less than £7 a day, giving them freedom and independence whilst they rebuild their lives.
A bike makes a huge difference – not only is it a practical tool for tackling poverty, those who receive bikes from us report they are more connected in their community, happier and healthier as a result:
91% of people use their bikes weekly for essential journeys
84% of people are better able to access legal and other vital support services
93% report better physical and/or mental health
Alongside our core Bike Donations Programme, we support refugee women to learn to cycle through our Pedal Power Programme; provide ongoing support with bike maintenance through our Repair or Replace Programme; and offer the opportunity for connection and friendship through our volunteer-matching Bike Buddy Programme.
“The Bike Project has given me so much more than just a bicycle — it has given me confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging. Receiving a bike as a gift allowed me to feel free in society, explore my community, and even join a cycling group where I’ve met wonderful people.
Thank you again for everything you do. Your work changes lives, including mine.”
Ladan, Bike Recipient
About You and the Role
You don’t need to have experience of being on a Board, in fact the role would be ideal for someone considering taking on their first role as a trustee. We will work with you to understand your duties and support you.
You will, however, have an excellent understanding of charity finance and understand the unique set of challenges charities of our size face in delivering impact and ensuring financial resilience. You will be an excellent communicator – able to provide constructive feedback and scrutiny at the same time as helping the team to articulate financial information to others who may not have a finance background.
You will be joining a highly committed group of trustees who give their time, expertise and contacts to support the charity. Our trustees are critical in enabling us to thrive and this role plays a key role in supporting the wider board to fulfil its financial responsibilities.
You will work together with the board and wider staff team to set our strategic direction and improve our work with refugees. At the heart of everything we do is the real and immediate impact a bike makes to the lives of those who have been through so much. You will be part of us achieving that.
The time commitment for a trustee generally totals approximately 8 hours per month. Please see the role description for further details.
We particularly encourage applications from people with lived experience of the asylum process, women, people of colour / people of the global majority, and people with disabilities.

The Lifescape Project is a quickly growing UK-registered charity whose mission is to protect and restore wild, natural landscapes. We use the skills and expertise of our multi-disciplinary team (spanning science, law, economics, technology and culture) to develop projects that pursue this mission.
We use the approach of combining disciplines to design and deliver our work because the biodiversity crisis is driven and impacted by social, economic, legal and other complex factors. It is increasingly recognised that the urgent transformative change needed for a sustainable future on our planet is most effectively achieved through this approach. The Lifescape Project has a unique ability to apply these diverse areas of expertise to our mission whilst maintaining the agility of a smaller organisation in delivering our work.
Working in pursuit of our 2020-2026 strategy, the Lifescape Project has seen rapid growth in its impact, team and revenue since commencing work in 2020. Our annual revenue has increased from £265,000 in FY 2020/2021 to £1.3m in FY 2025/2026, with further growth expected in the current FY. Our team has grown from just one to a team which will number 23 at the time of the new trustees joining.
Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that the Lifescape Project ("Lifescape") achieves its purpose. Trustees oversee the management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that Lifescape has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision: We want to live in a world rich in wild landscapes, providing a sustainable future for life on earth.
Just as importantly, trustees support and challenge the executive team to enable Lifescape to grow and thrive, to achieve our mission of catalysing the creation, restoration and protection of wild landscapes by through building and employing our expertise in science, technology, law, economics, and culture.
Duties include:
Support and provide advice on Lifescape’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
Approve operational strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
Oversee Lifescape’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress.
Review and approve Lifescape’s financial statements.
Keep abreast of changes in Lifescape's operating environment, and ensure that key risks are identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
Provide support and challenge to Lifescape’s CEO .
Contribute to regular reviews of Lifescape's own governance. Attend Board meetings, prepared to contribute to discussions.
Apply your expertise and knowledge and make use of your professional networks to contribute to the promotion of Lifescape's objects and aims, and to enhance the charity’s reputation..
As a small charity, there are times when trustees need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may include assisting with recruitment, developing internal policies, ad-hoc reviews of strategic decisions or providing guidance to the executive team on specific subject areas within your expertise.
What we are looking for
We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role.
Prior experience of working or volunteering for, or acting as trustee of, an NGO would be an advantage but is not required. We will provide a full induction and training.
For this round of trustee recruitment, we welcome interest from all candidates who believe they have something to offer. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in the following areas:
Planning and delivering conservation or rewilding programmes in Europe, or in Eastern or Southern Africa; or having relevant professional networks in those geographies.
Environmental economics / natural capital accounting.
Major donor or grant fundraising for charities.
Strategic communications.
Personal skills and qualities
Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a board member.
Effective communication skills and willingness to participate actively in discussion.
A strong personal commitment to our mission to protect and restore wild landscapes globally.
A strong personal commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
We are happy to consider trustees based in any geographic location.
We are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds and perspectives, and are keen to broaden the diversity of thinking on our board. Prior experience of serving on a board is not required, and you don't need to meet every single requirement listed in order to apply.
Our top priority is finding someone who is as passionate about Lifescape's mission and vision as we are and has time to commit to it
Terms of appointment
Terms of office
Trustees are appointed for a three-year term of office, subject to renewal at a designated board meeting.
This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
Time commitment
Trustees attend quarterly board meetings which last approximately two hours. These are usually scheduled towards the end of the UK working day (e.g. 5pm – 7pm) but timings can be varied if required.
Board meetings are usually held virtually, with one in-person meeting a year (see below).
An agenda and pack of supporting materials will be circulated in advance of the meeting. We would normally recommend allowing at least an hour to read these and prepare for the meeting.
In addition, we may call ad hoc meetings of the board as needed, e.g. to discuss strategy or where an urgent board approval is required.
Lifescape is a remote organisation and relies on periodic in-person meetings to bring team members together. The trustees are asked to attend an annual offsite, which may be held in the UK or abroad. Travel, accommodation and meals are paid for and organised by Lifescape. The length of the annual offsite varies depending on location but is usually four days, requiring trustees to spend at least three nights away from home.
Committee membership
The board delegates certain functions to committees. We currently have a Governance Committee and a Finance & HR Committee. There may be new committees in future. These committees meet approximately once a month, and the timing of the meetings is flexible to suit the availability of participants.
If you would like to see the Terms of Reference for either committee, then please let us know. We would be delighted if new trustees were keen to get involved in our committee work.
How to apply
To apply, please send your CV (max two pages) and a statement of no more than 500 words explaining your interest in and suitability for the role.
Applications close at the end of 31st July 2026, although we may close applications earlier if we receive a sufficient number of qualified candidates before this date.
There will be at least one interview for candidates who pass the first stage of review.
If you have any questions about the role or the application process, please contact us. If you require any information in a different format, please let us know.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.

The Coroners' Courts Support Service (CCSS) is a registered Charity whose trained volunteers give emotional and practical support to bereaved families and other witnesses attending an inquest.
This opportunity will be at both Crook and Durham so volunteers need to be willing to volunteer at both sites.
We need volunteers to provide emotional support and practical help to bereaved families, witnesses and others attending Inquests at Coroners' Court. Our volunteers at court also provide help and assistance to the Coroners' Officers, as and when required.
We are looking for reliable, supportive people with excellent communication skills. A mature and calm attitude is needed in order to be able to talk to people during a sometimes bewildering and emotional experience. Volunteers must be willing to undergo a period of observations and shadowing, as well as attend a 3 day training course. A minimum commitment of one day (9:00am - 5:00pm) per fortnight is asked for. Training and mentoring is provided and travel expenses to the court are reimbursed.
New volunteers should possess good communication and listening skills and the ability to empathise with people they support.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.

The National Flood Forum (NFF) supports and empowers people and communities at risk of flooding and helps those who flood to recover from the material and emotional trauma that flooding causes. With 24 years on the ground experience, we are the only national charity dedicated to supporting flood risk communities.
At the NFF, we give emotional and practical help and creating the right package of support for the long-term. Flooding can be a devastating experience with lasting economic, practical and emotional consequences and for many people the recovery process is as traumatic, or even more stressful, than the flood itself.
We pride ourselves on being there at every stage of the flood recovery process, working hand in hand with the people and communities we help. We also provide a powerful and independent voice for these communities, advocating for them with local and national government as well as the insurance industry and other corporate sectors.
We are seeking new Trustees to bring new insights, experience and skills to our Board. As a Trustee, you’ll help ensure the financial sustainability and governance of NFF.
As a Trustee you will have a commitment to supporting our values and approach to supporting communities at risk or who have flooded and you will advocate and be an ambassador for our work.
We’re especially interested in applications from you if you have:
· Experienced flooding or live with the threat of flooding.
· Fundraising, marketing or communications skills or experience
We particularly welcome applications from women, people from ethnic minority backgrounds, and residents of the North of England, East Anglia, or Wales, who are currently under-represented on our Board.
