I’m Tom, Chair of the Board of Trustees for We The Curious.
We are looking for individuals with specific skills to join our trustee board who are passionate about creating a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable future through science and creative experiences.
Following a prolonged closure due to Covid and then a fire in our venue, We The Curious reopened to the public in July of 2024. One year later we have newfound opportunities and challenges ahead and we need people with fresh perspectives and particular skills to help us continue to grow.
Finance – we are looking someone who is a chartered accountant and who has financial experience and expertise that they can bring to our board, as well as our Finance & Risk Assurance Committee
Legal – we are looking for a qualified lawyer to bring strategic legal and compliance expertise to our board and our Finance and Risk Assurance Committee.
Fundraising – we are looking for someone with fundraising and development experience to join our board, and either our Purpose or Finance and Risk Assurance Committee.
Education – we are looking for someone with experience in primary or secondary education

What is a trustee?
Trustees have overall control of a charity and are responsible for making sure it’s doing what it was set up to do. They may be known by other titles, such as: Directors, board members, governors, committee members
Whatever they are called, trustees are the people who work with our experienced leadership team to provide support, encouragement, challenge when needed and help to decide how the charity is run. Being a trustee means making decisions that will impact on people’s lives. As part of the board of trustees at We the Curious you will be making a difference to the community in Bristol and the surrounding area and helping us to connect and empower people through science. Trustees use their skills and experience to support their charities, helping them achieve their aims. Trustees also often learn new skills during their time on the board.

What will you do in this role?
As a trustee you will provide advice, knowledge and support to the leadership team at We The Curious.
With the steer of the Chair, the board of trustees ensures we pursue our purpose responsibly, are compliant with our governing documents, charity law and other relevant legislation. The board will review and advise on best practice and appropriate policies and procedures and uphold excellent governance.
Below are some of the key areas of work generally as a trustee.
As a trustee you will:
_Contribute individual skills and knowledge in support of the vision and strategic delivery

_Act as ambassadors locally, nationally and internationally
_Assist with the evaluation and review of the policies, goals and targets of the organisation

_Contribute to working groups for specific focus on projects
All Trustees should use their specific skills, knowledge or experience to help the Board of Trustees reach informed decisions in the best interest of We The Curious.
This will involve scrutinising Board papers, leading discussion and providing guidance as requested by the Board on new initiatives or other issues relevant to the area of our work in which the trustee has expertise.
Finance - as a trustee with strategic financial experience you will:
_Help to provide financial oversight for the charity, ensuring resources are used, invested and spent in line with legal requirements
_Ensure the charity complies with charity law and financial governance requirements
_Advise the board and leadership team on when to seek external financial advice for complex matters
_Join our finance and risk assurance committee and regularly monitor the management accounts and financial reporting with a view to becoming chair of the committee
We are looking for qualified accountants with practical up-to-date knowledge of management accounting principles, financial reporting and charity finances, analytical skills and strategic thinking.
Legal - as a trustee with legal expertise you will:
_Contribute strategic advice to the board on the legal implications of our plans and initiatives
_Advise the board and leadership team on when to seek external legal advice for complex matters
_Ensure the charity complies with its governing document, charity law and other relevant legislation
_Join our finance and risk assurance committee and work to manage any legal risks, ensuring policies and procedures align with best legal practices
We are looking for qualified lawyers with strong knowledge of company and charity law, analytical skills and strategic thinking.
Fundraising - as a trustee with fundraising and development expertise you will:
_Contribute strategic advice to the board around fundraising and development strategy
_Advise the board and leadership team on potential funding streams
_Join either our finance and risk assurance committee or our purpose committee
We are looking for people with strong background in fundraising and strategic thinking.
Education - as a trustee with primary or secondary education expertise you will:
_Contribute strategic advice to the board around education of school aged children (key stages 1 to 4)
_Advise the board and leadership team on issues around education – which could include curriculum and traditional education, alternative education, CME or SEND provision
_Join either our finance and risk assurance committee or our purpose committee
We are looking for people who are passionate and knowledgeable around the education of young people and share our commitment to equitable education for all.
Time commitment
_We hold quarterly board meetings, typically from 4pm to 7pm. Trustees are expected to attend and contribute to all meetings either in person or by joining virtually.
_Papers for the board meetings are sent one week prior and from time-to-time will include specific asks or requests for information and input from trustees.
_ You will also be asked to take part in one of our quarterly committee meetings which take place virtually two weeks prior to the board meeting, typically from 4pm to 6pm.
_We hold one annual board away day, typically from 10am to 5pm which takes place in person.
_ Board Meetings are located at the We The Curious offices within the science centre in central Bristol, and our away days take place at an alternate venue in Bristol once a year.
_ You may also be called upon for advice or assistance by the leadership team, for example to give input on areas related to your specialism, attend additional meetings or to be present at We The Curious events.
Remuneration
This is a voluntary role. Reasonable travel expenses will be covered. Refreshments are provided at Board meetings and lunch is provided at the annual strategy away day.

Terms of appointment
_Trustees are appointed to an initial three-year term of service (including a 12-month probationary period).
_Trustees can serve a maximum of six years with a reappointment after the first term of three years unless the trustee holds an office, such as Chair or Deputy Chair, in which case they would be eligible for a further three-year term. The maximum term of office is nine years.

This post is subject to a 12-month probationary period.

I’ve never been a trustee before, should I apply?
Yes! If you feel you connect with these values or have the skills/knowledge we are looking for, then we’d love to hear from you.
You just need to be at least 18 years old. You don’t need formal qualifications, or previous trustee experience or a science background. We’ll give you training on good governance and opportunities for mentorship.

Supporting you
Training
If you join the board, you will have an induction and onboarding experience to support you with your role and get you connected with the rest of the organisation.
If you are a first-time trustee or want a refresher, we will provide you with training on good governance and other topics related to your role. We will also provide you with mentorship from other members of the board.

Do you have what it takes to be the new lead for our Lay Advisory Group?
Kidney Research UK’s Lay Advisory Group are currently looking for a new lead. In this vital and rewarding role, you would help ensure that people affected by kidney disease influence all aspects of our work. As lead of the Lay Advisory Group, you would have a key role within the charity championing the involvement of patients to transform kidney health and presenting patient views at our trustee board meetings.
The Lay Advisory Group helps drive and strengthen patient and public involvement (PPI) within Kidney Research UK and provides opportunities to influence change externally to help transform kidney health. This is a senior volunteer role and will provide effective leadership for the Lay Advisory Group and its work.
After leading the group for five successful years, the current lead is stepping down, so we are looking to appoint a new lead.

StreetVet is a fast-growing national charity, committed to providing free vet care to the pets of those experiencing homelessness and to keeping pets and owners together to maintain the human-animal bond. Our Top Priorities
We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Fundraising Trustee to work with the staff and Board to develop and build the existing fundraising strategy and capability of this small but rapidly growing national charity to the next step in realising our ambition, whilst embedding good governance, and strengthening the charity’s financial position. As a young charity we still need practical, hands on support from the trustees in their area of expertise while we work to mature into an organisation where the trustees can focus on a purely governance role.
Broad Description of Role
· Contribute actively as a member of the Board of Trustees to provide strategic direction, set overall strategy and policy, set targets and evaluate performance.
· Oversee all fundraising and ensure it is undertaken legally, honestly and accountably. Adhering to the Fundraising Regulator guidelines.
· Work with the CEO, Head of Marketing & Fundraising, Fundraising Manager and Board of Trustees to develop and implement a fundraising strategy for the charity to strengthen our financial sustainability, including maintaining existing donors and developing new funding streams.
· Use pre-existing networks to identify funding opportunities and facilitate introductions as well as strengthening relationships with existing donors and supporters.
· Support the development of a HNW network which will take some creativity in the current climate.
· Oversee the development and use of campaigns, social media and celebrity engagement so support income generation.
· Ensure donor reporting and compliance with fundraising legislation.
Who we’re looking for - knowledge and experience
· Demonstrable experience of fundraising at a senior level within the Third Sector.
· A thorough understanding of the Third Sector, Charity Commission legislation, charity governance and the Fundraising Regulator’s guidelines.
· Awareness of the challenges a small charity can face in developing long term funding streams.
· Experience of donor cultivation and journey.
· Experience of a diverse range of funding streams such as trust and foundations, corporate giving, HNW, individual giving and commercial income generation.
· Excellent networking, influencing and communication skills.
· Active support of fundraising programme.
· Help to create a culture of philanthropy.
Input and Time Commitment:
· A time commitment of 2-4 hours a month would be expected.
· Trustees are expected to be available for regular consultation and input on a range of issues in between meetings, usually via email.
· Attend at least one outreach a year.
· Attend virtual quarterly board meetings, held on third Tuesday of January, April, July, October at 6pm. Meetings duration approx 1 – 2 hours.
o Papers for the meeting are sent the week prior and Trustees must ensure they have read and understood all the information in advance in order to participate fully.
· Attend annual conference – usually 2 days in London.
· Attend in-person annual strategic review, usually half a day, in London.
· Training will be provided to give a good understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, liabilities and responsibilities of trustees.

Key Responsibilities:

Purpose of the role:

Tell My Truth and Shame the Devil C.I.C. is seeking a dedicated Technical Systems & Platform Liaison to join our founding volunteer team. This role is pivotal in connecting our technical infrastructure with the operational and community-facing needs of the organisation, ensuring our open-source membership platform and systems function seamlessly to support survivors, marginalised communities and emerging leaders.
About the role:
As the Technical Systems & Platform Liaison, you will act as the bridge between the CIC’s technical teams, leadership, and community members. You will ensure that digital systems are effectively implemented, maintained, and optimised to serve our mission. This is a hands-on, multi-faceted role combining strategic coordination, operational oversight, and community engagement, providing you with unique experience in systems management and collaborative leadership.
Experience Qualification and Requirements
Essential Technical Competencies:
- Experience in digital platform management, IT operations, systems administration or similar roles where platform functionality and user support were key responsibilities.
- Ability to monitor system performance, identify issues and implement improvements to ensure reliability, scalability and security.
- Act as a liaison between technical teams and end-users to communicate requirements, issues and solutions effectively.
- Ensure that technical systems and platforms operate efficiently, securely and meet organisational needs.
- Maintain the integrity, reliability and performance of organisational platforms and systems.
- Provide guidance, training and documentation to staff, volunteers and community members to improve platform adoption and utilisation.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose technical issues and propose practical solutions.
- Ability to plan, prioritise and manage multiple tasks, projects and deadlines simultaneously.
- Work closely with developers, IT staff and platform users to ensure system requirements and issues are clearly communicated.
- Degrees, diplomas, or certifications in IT, systems management, computer science or related fields are desirable but not essential.
Desirable / Can Be Developed:
- Experience or interest in working with technical systems, digital platforms or IT support environments.
- Ability to act as a bridge between technical teams and non-technical stakeholders.

- Provide guidance to staff and volunteers on safe data handling, secure system use and adherence to organisational policies.
- Collaborate with leadership, technical teams and stakeholders to define long-term goals and priorities for digital platforms and systems.
- Ensure that proposed developments align with organisational strategy, community needs and compliance requirements.
- Provide advice and practical support to users to minimise downtime and optimise platform use.

1. Background
ActionAid’s Red and Orange Alert protocols are designed to guide communications in humanitarian emergencies, ensuring timely, accurate, and coordinated outputs across the global federation. These protocols play a critical role in mobilising public attention, fundraising, and shaping narratives. However, questions have emerged around efficiency, resourcing, wellbeing, integration with wider organisational work, and alignment with ActionAid UK’s 2025–2028 strategy and ActionAid’s international strategic framework (SIF 3).
This review will assess the current Red and Orange Alert communications protocols, identify strengths, challenges and key successes, and recommend revisions to strengthen their effectiveness, sustainability, and alignment with organisational priorities.
2. Objectives
- Review the existing Red and Orange Alert communications protocols to assess their relevance, effectiveness, and unintended consequences.
- Make recommendations for a revised protocol, including clearer structures for delegated authority, risk/crisis communications, staff wellbeing, and integration with wider organisational priorities.
3. Scope of work
ActionAid is looking for a qualified consultant or company to undertake a review of ActionAid’s communications work in humanitarian emergencies
The review will:
- Use our existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as a starting point.
- Examine how ActionAid's existing “Red and Orange” Alert protocols function in practice across ActionAid UK and the Global Secretariat.
- Assess the resources required to activate alerts, including staff time, budget, and outputs, and analyse the value generated for the organisation particularly against ActionAid UK’s new strategy and SIF 3.
- Explore the unintended consequences of the protocols, including:
- Impact on staff wellbeing and risk of burnout.
- The extent to which Red Alerts are siloed or disconnected from other organisational priorities.
- Investigate gaps in managing reputational risk during highly volatile and politicised humanitarian crises
- Who is responsible for risk and how is authority currently delegated
- What processes currently exist.
- What risks does AAUK face, internally and externally
- Recommendations for a clear and sustainable reputational risk framework
4. Methodology
The review team will:
- Gain an understanding of AA's wider organisational work, to ensure the reviews alignment with ActionAid UK’s 2025–2028 strategy and ActionAid’s international strategic framework (SIF 3).
- Conduct document analysis of the existing MOU, alert protocols, and sample case studies of recent alerts.
- Carry out interviews or focus groups with key stakeholders, including:
- ActionAid UK Red Alert staff.
- Global Secretariat Orange Alert staff.
- Fundraising colleagues.
- Other relevant ActionAid staff who engage in emergency communications.
- Collect and analyse data on staff time, budget allocations, outputs, and outcomes linked to past alerts.
- Synthesize findings into a diagnostic report with recommendations.

The review is expected to run over a period of 14 weeks starting on as soon as possible, although there is some flexibility on the timetable. A detailed timeline will be agreed during inception.

You will be directly shaping the systems that enable vulnerable and marginalised communities to access resources, engage safely and participate in transformative personal development.
Purpose of the role:
The Volunteer Open-Source Platform Engineer contributes to the development, maintenance and improvement of open-source software platforms that support the organisation’s mission. This role involves collaborating with developers, contributors and stakeholders to build scalable, reliable and efficient solutions while ensuring code quality, security and accessibility.
About the Role:
As our Open-Source Platform Engineer, you will design, develop, and maintain the core technology stack for our membership platform, ensuring it is secure, scalable, and aligned with open-source principles. You will work closely with the Membership Director, Technical Systems Liaison, and other team members to integrate community-facing tools, data systems, and collaborative features that support our anti-capitalist, values-led mission. This is a hands-on, impact-driven role where your technical expertise directly enables social change.
Experience Qualification and Requirements
Essential Technical Competencies:
- Experience designing, integrating and maintaining APIs, as well as managing secure authentication and data practices.
- Familiarity with cloud-hosted and on-premises system environments, including deployment and maintenance.
- Proven experience in open-source development, software engineering or systems architecture.
- Ability to clearly document technical processes, system workflows and platform architecture.
- Skilled at communicating complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Contributing to open-source projects or collaborative software development initiatives.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities to debug code, optimise performance and implement improvements.
Desirable / Can Be Developed:
- Basic understanding of open-source software principles and collaborative development practices.
- Familiarity with at least one programming or scripting language (e.g. Python, JavaScript, Bash or similar).

- Build scalable, secure and accessible systems that facilitate user registration, content management and interactive community features.
- Build robust content management systems (CMS) to enable efficient creation, organisation, publishing and retrieval of digital content for community members and volunteers.
- Integrate third-party tools, APIs and plug-ins to extend platform functionality in alignment with organisational goals and requirements.
- Collaborate with technical and non-technical team members to understand community and organisational needs, translating them into functional and user-friendly systems.
- Provide technical guidance and insights to inform strategic decisions around system architecture, integrations, platform design and development priorities.
- Monitor platform performance and troubleshoot issues, proactively identifying and resolving technical problems to ensure smooth operation.
- Ensure documentation supports compliance and best practices, including data protection, accessibility standards and organisational policies.
