As a charity, our Trustees are the governing body of our organisation. They fulfil a vital role and help ensure that the Mayor’s Fund for London delivers on its mission and purpose and uses its resources effectively. Much more than that, they help set and shape the strategy of the Charity, they live its values, and they are ambassadors on its behalf.
We are currently recruiting for 3 new Trustees.
As a charity that supports and champions better outcomes for young people in London, we are especially interested in recruiting some new trustees aged 24-30. This may be through direct experience of the challenges young Londoners are facing, through experience and knowledge of our programmes and activities, and/or a desire to take a step into a strategic governance role with a charity whose mission matters to them.
The Board already has a wide range of diversity, experience and expertise, and we are keen to continue to broaden that experience through this recruitment. In particular, we are looking for some knowledge in:
- Charity Finance
- Data and Technology
- Funding and Income Generation
At the Mayor’s Fund for London, we want our Trustees to feel part of our team. To bring insights and experience into our organisation, and to be prepared to work collaboratively with staff and young people, to shape opportunities for the future.
The Board meets four times per year (March, July, September, and December), and has one sub-committee covering Finance, Audit and Risk (FAR), which meets two weeks before the Board. Trustees are expected to attend all full Board meetings, and those nominated to join the FAR Committee are expected to attend those meetings too. All of our meetings are currently online to allow flexibility, and there is an expectation that, from time to time, Trustees will engage with the staff team and be present at our events.

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is one of the world’s leading public health universities. LSHTM was established in 1899 and is incorporated under a Royal Charter granted in 1924. The Charter establishes its Council as the “supreme governing body” of LSHTM. Council is responsible for the strategic direction of LSHTM and approves major developments and receives regular reports from Executive Officers on the operations of its business, in accordance with the Financial Memorandum between LSHTM and the Office for Students (OfS).
Council is also responsible for its governance, control and supervision in accordance with the LSHTM’s Charter and relevant external regulations. These external requirements are set out in the Financial Memorandum between LSHTM and the OfS. The Council comprises a majority of lay members, as well as staff members and a student member. The roles of Chair and Deputy Chair of the Council are separated from the role of LSHTM’s Chief Executive, the Director.
Council has two vacancies for the role of independent member of Council. LSHTM has identified a number of areas where relevant expertise from any new Council members would be welcomed:
- Finance, Accounting and Investment Management
- Business, Enterprise, SMEs and start-ups
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Digital
Amongst the desirable attributes sought from members of Council and its Committees are:
- A strong personal commitment to the mission and objectives of LSHTM;
- Collaborative skills and the ability to work as a member of a team, including with other Council and Committee members, students and academic and professional services staff;
- Tact and diplomacy, with the ability to listen and engage effectively;
- Ability to contribute to constructive and rigorous challenge;
- Strong networking capabilities that can be utilised for the benefit of LSHTM;
- A demonstrable commitment to equity and diversity.
Time Commitment
The nature of the role requires a commitment of time to prepare, attend and actively participate in Council and Committee meetings. Council meets four times a year and its Committees meet between three and six times a year depending on the Committee.
Remuneration
This is a non-remunerated role that does not attract a salary or honorarium. Independent members of Council and Committees will be able to claim reasonable travel and subsistence expenses incurred in the course of LSHTM business.

About the role
UK Feminista is looking for people committed to feminism and women’s equality to join our volunteer Board of Directors.
Founded in 2010, UK Feminista is a charitable organisation working for a society free from sexism and violence against women and girls. We campaign for systemic change so that women can enjoy their rights as enshrined in the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. We exist to tackle the root causes of sex inequality. Our core programmes are combating commercial sexual exploitation; and tackling sexism and sexual harassment in education. The role of the Board of Directors is to:

Take legal and financial responsibility in order to safeguard the assets and the continuity of UK Feminista.

Be satisfied that financial information is accurate and that financial management systems and controls are robust and defensible.

Ensure that UK Feminista complies with its Articles of Association, company law and other relevant legislation and regulations.

Ensure that the policies and practices of UK Feminista meets the organisation’s needs, are in keeping with its charitable objects and strive to achieve best practise.

Further the charitable objects of UK Feminista.
In carrying out the collective responsibilities of the Board, the role of the individual Director is to:

Follow UK Feminista’s Code of Conduct at all times.

Declare conflicts of interest and exercise confidentiality and independent judgement at all times.

Contribute relevant knowledge and expertise to the organisation’s activities at the request of the Director.

Be a proactive advocate for UK Feminista.

Act as an ambassador to UK Feminista, including building the profile of the organisation; seeking relevant fundraising connections and support; and representing the organisation at meetings and acting as spokesperson when requested by the Director.

Contribute to the development of the organisational strategy through providing support, constructive challenge and ideas, in collaboration with the Director.

Level of commitment
UK Feminista is a small organisation, so this is a hands-on Board Member role. As well as four 90-minute online board meetings a year and attending an annual in-person Away Day in London, Board Members attend additional adhoc meetings, events and provide organisational support as needed.
