Project Yananai is seeking an exceptional, hands‑on communications leader to join our Global Executive Leadership Team as Director of Communications. The Role

As Director of Communications, you will be the architect and hands‑on executor of Project Yananai’s global communications strategy. You will ensure that our brand, our story, and our impact are communicated with clarity, consistency, and creativity across all channels - from donor communications and funding proposals to social media, press relations, and internal team updates.

This is not a purely strategic role; you will be expected to lead by doing. You will draft high‑value communications materials yourself, manage digital platforms, and produce content that resonates with diverse audiences - donors, partners, governments, and the communities we serve. You will work closely with the Chief Advancement Officer, the Director of Strategic Partnerships, Director of Funding, the Deputy Chief Advancement Officer, and National Management Teams to ensure that our communications are aligned with fundraising priorities and partnership objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Communications Strategy & Brand Management

• Develop and execute a comprehensive global communications strategy that supports Project Yananai’s mission, Theory of Change, and growth objectives.
• Establish and maintain a strong, consistent brand identity across all channels and materials, ensuring alignment with organisational values and visual identity guidelines.
• Lead the creation of key messaging frameworks, ensuring that our story is compelling, authentic, and tailored to diverse audiences.

Hands‑On Content Creation & Production

• Personally draft and edit high‑value communications materials, including:
  • Funding proposals and donor impact reports
  • Press releases, media statements, and op‑eds
  • Website copy, blog posts, and case studies
  • Newsletters, email campaigns, and stewardship communications
  • Social media content (LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
  • Internal communications (team updates, newsletters, leadership messages)
• Design and produce visual content using design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva) to create compelling graphics, infographics, and presentation materials.
• Manage the production of multimedia content, including videos, photography, and audio, in collaboration with program teams and external partners as needed.

Digital Platforms & Tools

• Oversee the organisation’s digital presence, including the website, social media channels, and email marketing platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Salesforce Marketing Cloud).
• Manage and optimise content management systems, ensuring that the website is up‑to‑date, user‑friendly, and aligned with SEO best practices.
• Use analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, social media insights) to monitor performance, measure engagement, and inform strategy.

Donor & Partner Communications

• Work closely with the Advancement team to develop compelling communications that support fundraising, partnership development, and donor stewardship.
• Lead the production of high‑quality donor reports, proposals, and pitch decks that articulate impact and build trust.
• Ensure that all donor‑facing materials are consistent, professional, and aligned with regulatory requirements (including Fundraising Regulator standards).

Media Relations & Public Affairs

• Build and maintain relationships with key journalists, media outlets, and sector influencers.
• Draft and distribute press releases, manage media inquiries, and coordinate interviews with senior leadership.
• Identify opportunities for thought leadership, including speaking engagements, conference presentations, and contributed articles.

Internal Communications

• Develop and implement an internal communications strategy that keeps our global team informed, engaged, and aligned with organisational priorities.
• Draft and distribute regular internal updates, including leadership messages, team newsletters, and operational announcements.
• Ensure that National Management Teams have the communications tools and support they need to share local stories and coordinate messaging.

Team Leadership & Capacity Building

• Build and lead a growing communications function, including recruiting, managing, and mentoring staff and volunteers as the team expands.
• Provide training and guidance to colleagues across the organisation on communications best practices, brand consistency, and storytelling.

Compliance & Governance

• Ensure that all communications comply with UK charity law, Fundraising Regulator requirements, data protection regulations (UK GDPR), and local laws in our focus countries.
• Maintain accurate records of communications activities and materials.

About You

Essential Experience & Track Record

• Minimum 10 years’ experience in communications, public relations, or marketing, with at least 3 years in a senior leadership role.
• Proven track record of developing and executing communications strategies for international organisations, preferably in the non‑profit or development sector.
• Exceptional writing and editing skills, with demonstrated ability to craft compelling narratives for diverse audiences (donors, media, internal teams).
• Hands‑on experience with design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva) and content management systems (e.g., WordPress, Drupal).
• Proficiency with email marketing platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Salesforce) and social media management tools.
• Experience managing media relations and building relationships with journalists and influencers.

Qualifications

• 91% of people use their bikes weekly for essential journeys

• 84% of people are better able to access legal and other vital support services

Alongside our core Bike Donations Programme, we support refugee women to learn to cycle through our Pedal Power Programme; provide ongoing support with bike maintenance through our Repair or Replace Programme; and offer the opportunity for connection and friendship through our volunteer-matching Bike Buddy Programme.

About You and the Role  

You don’t need to have experience of being on a Board. In fact, the role would be ideal for someone considering taking on their first role as a trustee. We will work with you to understand your duties as a trustee and support you.

You will, however, have experience of one of more of priority areas we are looking for:

• Personal experience of our programmes and/or the UK asylum system
• Press and PR
• Charity governance
• Public, philanthropy and/or high-net worth giving
• Sector experience and/or contacts relevant to the work of The Bike Project

You will be joining a highly committed group of trustees who give their time, expertise and contacts to support the charity. Our trustees are critical in enabling us to thrive and this role plays a key role in supporting the wider board to fulfil its financial responsibilities.

You will work together with the wider staff team to set our strategic direction and improve our work with refugees. At the heart of everything we do is the real and immediate impact a bike makes to the lives of those who have been through so much. You will be part of us achieving that.

We are looking for exceptional people from a variety of backgrounds, to join AvMA’s Board of Trustees at an important point in our development, this being the midpoint of implementing our 5-year strategy.

AvMA is the UK charity for patient safety and justice. We provide free advice and support to thousands of people each year who have been affected by avoidable harm in healthcare, and we work to influence improvements in patient safety and to see people treated fairly when things go wrong. We also provide an accreditation scheme for lawyers specialising in clinical negligence work and a competence scheme for more junior lawyers, recognising that this is a highly complex area of law requiring strong specialist knowledge.

We are now seeking to appoint up to three new Trustees and/or Associate Trustees. Each appointment will strengthen the Board by bringing a particular area of specialist expertise alongside the wider skills, judgement and commitment expected of all Trustees.

About the roles:

AvMA is governed by a Board of Trustees who come from a range of backgrounds and bring different experiences. This recruitment is intended to strengthen the Board further by bringing in new specialist expertise alongside strong governance capability.

Important application instruction - Applicants must make clear in their covering letter which of the three specialist skill sets they are applying for and whether they are applying as a Trustee or as an Associate Trustee.

• Trustee: a full member of the Board, taking on the legal and governance responsibilities of trusteeship and contributing to collective decision-making.

The three specialist skill sets we are seeking:

1. Clinical negligence law

We are seeking someone with senior-level expertise in clinical negligence law, ideally with experience on the claimant side.

• Ideally claimant-side experience with clinical negligence accreditation.

• Understanding of access to justice issues affecting injured patients and families.

• Insight into Alternative Dispute Resolution practices including mediation.

• Ability to support strategic thinking about AvMA’s public-facing services, policy influence and accreditation work.

• Awareness of the importance of managing conflicts of interest carefully.

2. Senior charity fundraising/income generation expertise

• We are seeking someone with senior-level charity fundraising or income generation expertise.

• Understanding of fundraising strategy and income diversification.

• Knowledge of individual giving, trusts and foundations, corporate partnerships, major donor fundraising, legacy fundraising or supporter engagement.

• Ability to advise strategically on fundraising opportunities and risks.

• Understanding of ethical fundraising and donor stewardship.

• Ability to support AvMA in widening its reach, profile and supporter base.

3. IT/digital expertise for a growing charity

We are seeking someone with IT, digital, data or technology expertise relevant to a growing charity.

• Senior experience in IT, digital, data, systems or technology strategy.

• Understanding of digital transformation in small or medium-sized organisations.

• Ability to advise on systems, data quality, knowledge management, cyber security and digital risk.

• Appreciation of how technology can improve service delivery, governance and organisational effectiveness.

• Understanding of how AI can be exploited whilst maintaining safety, confidentiality and ethical principles.

Trustee role description

Governance and oversight: ensure AvMA operates in accordance with its governing document, policies, charity law and relevant legislation or regulation; oversee implementation of AvMA’s strategy; provide accountability; and ensure resources are managed responsibly.

Strategic leadership: contribute to development and implementation of AvMA’s strategy, including setting objectives and monitoring progress against them.

Financial stewardship: monitor AvMA’s financial health; ensure sound financial controls and systems are in place; review and approve annual budgets, management accounts and annual reports; and ensure funds are used effectively.

Risk management: identify and assess risks facing AvMA and ensure appropriate systems, policies and procedures are in place, including for safeguarding and data protection.

Advocacy and ambassadorship: act as an ambassador for AvMA, promote its values and mission externally and use networks and contacts, where appropriate, to support AvMA’s work.

Board meetings and committees: attend and actively participate in Board meetings, committees and other relevant meetings; read papers in advance and contribute to discussion and decision-making.

Governors for Schools recruits and matches volunteers with school governing boards and provides ongoing support.

What’s involved?

There are governor vacancies across England and Wales. Some schools are also looking for remote governors who don't need to live near the school they support.

Governors volunteer at board level to set the strategic vision for their school. This involves constructively challenging current processes, using your unique skills to support senior leaders, and overseeing school finances. You’ll be involved in areas such as monitoring, budget management, and data analysis. As well as putting your expertise to good use, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your professional skills. Ultimately, you’ll work towards facilitating the delivery of a broad and exciting curriculum and oversee wellbeing and inclusion initiatives. Governance represents a fantastic opportunity to develop yourself while making a real impact on the education of children and young people.

Governors work collaboratively with the headteacher and other members of the board, including parents and school staff. In most schools, full board meetings are held termly, as are committee meetings. Many governors will sit on a committee linked to their expertise or interests, such as teaching and learning or finance and resources. In addition to attending meetings, governors will need to read the papers in advance, complete training courses, and occasionally visit their school.

Governors usually support schools for a period of four years and with an estimated time commitment of 7 hours per month. During these hours, you will attend meetings, read papers, attend training sessions, and make occasional visits to school.

Who can be a governor?

The most important part of being a governor is the ability to ask questions, provide support and have the best interests of the school at heart. You don't have to be a parent or have experience in education to become a governor. Schools seek a  wide range of skills to support the board, including finance, HR, and data analysis.

Boards also need governors with a diversity of backgrounds and lived experiences to ensure a range of perspectives are considered during board meetings.

Schools welcome professional experience, as well as community insight and experience of working collaboratively.

You need to be aged 18 or above and there are certain criminal convictions that would exclude you from the role. A Disclosure and Barring Service check will be carried out by the school.

What’s the process?

You can find out more about the school governor role by attending one of our recruitment webinars.

You can complete your online profile on the website, including your motivation to take on the role, your skills and your school preferences. Your regional Partnership Manager will then look at vacancies that match your requirements. Once a school is identified, you will have the opportunity to discuss the role with them in more detail, visit the school, and observe a meeting. If appointed, a DBS check will take place and, in some cases, the school will seek references.

Ongoing support

Governors for Schools isn’t just a matching service. We want to help you thrive in your role through bespoke and ongoing support. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to get involved in an impactful charity making a tangible difference to the lives of refugees here in the UK.

Our work is simple – we refurbish unwanted bikes and donate them to refugees and people seeking asylum, many living on less than £7 a day, giving them freedom and independence whilst they rebuild their lives.

A bike makes a huge difference – not only is it a practical tool for tackling poverty, those who receive bikes from us report they are more connected in their community, happier and healthier as a result:

• 91% of people use their bikes weekly for essential journeys

• 84% of people are better able to access legal and other vital support services 

• 93% report better physical and/or mental health

Alongside our core Bike Donations Programme, we support refugee women to learn to cycle through our Pedal Power Programme; provide ongoing support with bike maintenance through our Repair or Replace Programme; and offer the opportunity for connection and friendship through our volunteer-matching Bike Buddy Programme.

About You and the Role  

You don’t need to have experience of being on a Board, in fact the role would be ideal for someone considering taking on their first role as a trustee. We will work with you to understand your duties and support you.

You will, however, have an excellent understanding of charity finance and understand the unique set of challenges charities of our size face in delivering impact and ensuring financial resilience. You will be an excellent communicator – able to provide constructive feedback and scrutiny at the same time as helping the team to articulate financial information to others who may not have a finance background.
 
You will be joining a highly committed group of trustees who give their time, expertise and contacts to support the charity. Our trustees are critical in enabling us to thrive and this role plays a key role in supporting the wider board to fulfil its financial responsibilities.

You will work together with the board and wider staff team to set our strategic direction and improve our work with refugees. At the heart of everything we do is the real and immediate impact a bike makes to the lives of those who have been through so much. You will be part of us achieving that.
 
The time commitment for a trustee generally totals approximately 8 hours per month. Please see the role description for further details.
