Mencap Befriender - Football, Friendship and a Cuppa

MTC Together is a befriending service for people with a learning disability, who are registered with the Mencap Trust Company.

The service matches the skills and interests of passionate befrienders with the specific needs, hobbies and interests of the people we visit. Befrienders visit every month to create a 1-2-1 connection, help enhance social connections, reducing isolation, encouraging interests and support access to local community activities and resources.

About the person you'll be visiting:

• A dedicated Port Vale football supporter and season ticket holder
• Loves football and enjoys talking about the latest matches and sporting events
• Has a great sense of humour and enjoys a laugh and friendly banter
• Likes watching football and sports videos on YouTube
• Would appreciate some basic support using his laptop to find and watch videos online
• Enjoys sitting with a cuppa, having a chat, and watching the world go by from the window

What you could do together:

• Share a cup of tea and a good conversation
• Chat about football, especially Port Vale
• Watch football and sports highlights on YouTube
• Help him use his laptop to access videos and online content
• Enjoy some friendly banter and companionship
• Spend time together at home in a relaxed environment

Bonus if you're a Port Vale fan!

• Ideally, we'd love to find a fellow Port Vale supporter
• He would like someone to accompany him to Port Vale home games around once a month
• As a season ticket holder, he enjoys the matchday experience and would love to share it with someone who shares his passion for the club

We're looking for someone who:

• Enjoys football and sport
• Is friendly, patient, and comfortable chatting with others
• Has basic IT confidence
• Can offer companionship and build a meaningful friendship
• Enjoys making a positive difference in someone's life
• Passionate about supporting people with a learning disability

As Mencap befriender you have the opportunity to help make a difference to the life of the person you visit. You will receive a personalised volunteer induction and training, have agreed out of pocket expenses reimbursed, meet new people, get on-going support and feel appreciated and valued.
