​Who are Governors for Schools?

Governors for Schools operates across England and Wales to improve educational standards and ensure all children and young people have the chance to realise their full potential.

We believe the key to improving school performance is effective governance. By finding, nurturing and supporting a committed network of governors, we drive positive systematic change that benefits each and every student, regardless of their background.

Governors for Schools recruits and matches volunteers with school governing boards and provides ongoing support.

What’s involved?

There are governor vacancies across England and Wales. Some schools are also looking for remote governors who don't need to live near the school they support.

Governors volunteer at board level to set the strategic vision for their school. This involves constructively challenging current processes, using your unique skills to support senior leaders, and overseeing school finances. You’ll be involved in areas such as monitoring, budget management, and data analysis. As well as putting your expertise to good use, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your professional skills. Ultimately, you’ll work towards facilitating the delivery of a broad and exciting curriculum and oversee wellbeing and inclusion initiatives. Governance represents a fantastic opportunity to develop yourself while making a real impact on the education of children and young people.

Governors work collaboratively with the headteacher and other members of the board, including parents and school staff. In most schools, full board meetings are held termly, as are committee meetings. Many governors will sit on a committee linked to their expertise or interests, such as teaching and learning or finance and resources. In addition to attending meetings, governors will need to read the papers in advance, complete training courses, and occasionally visit their school.

Governors usually support schools for a period of four years and with an estimated time commitment of 7 hours per month. During these hours, you will attend meetings, read papers, attend training sessions, and make occasional visits to school.

The most important part of being a governor is the ability to ask questions, provide support and have the best interests of the school at heart. You don't have to be a parent or have experience in education to become a governor. Schools seek a  wide range of skills to support the board, including finance, HR, and data analysis.

Schools welcome professional experience, as well as community insight and experience of working collaboratively.

You need to be aged 18 or above and there are certain criminal convictions that would exclude you from the role. A Disclosure and Barring Service check will be carried out by the school.

Our housing association members provide homes for around six million people and are driven by a social purpose: providing good quality housing that people can afford.

We support our members to deliver that social purpose, with ambitious work that leads to positive change, and we are looking for board members who are committed to helping us achieve this.

We have a vacant independent board member position and are looking to appoint to this post with a start date in September 2026.

Our board members come from both within and outside of the social housing sector, and we have a number of independent board members who bring a range of more diverse experiences.

On this occasion, we are inviting applications from people within the social housing sector to join us. We are particularly interested in hearing from our larger members, particularly those with a presence outside of London.

Successful candidates:

Although we do not expect the candidate to have experience in the housing sector, we are looking for relevant candidates with an interest in the sector or experience in working with membership organisations at a strategic level.

As a successful Board member, you will provide excellence in governance, be an ambassador and use your strategic skills to make us an even more effective organisation.

You will be involved in influencing the NHF’s business to ensure that we successfully manage the challenges and significant change that the future is set to bring.

In addition to the above, the essential experience required includes:

- Proven strategic leadership, vision, and a collegiate approach.
- A strong track record of championing equality, diversity, and inclusion, and delivering change.
- Governance expertise and strong analytical skills.
- An excellent track record of effective stakeholder relationship management and ambassadorial activities.
- A passion for the social housing sector's purpose and the current challenges.

Commitment:
Board meetings will be a mixture of in-person meetings, generally held in central London and virtual video conference calls. There may be occasional national travel, reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed.

In addition to Board meetings, each Board member also sits on one of NHF’s sub-committees, either our Audit and Risk Management Committee or our Nominations, Remuneration and Governance Committee. The total time commitment from Board members is approximately six days a year.

As our Social Media & Communications Volunteer, you’ll help bring our mission to life across digital platforms. Working closely with our Digital Marketing Officer and the wider Fundraising & Communications team, you will support the creation of content that:

• Raises awareness of our work and impact
• Supports fundraising and community engagement
• Strengthens our online presence, especially during our period of transition
• Taps into trends, conversation moments, and creative formats

This is a varied and dynamic role — perfect for someone who thrives on creativity, enjoys experimenting with content, and wants hands on experience in the charity sector.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Assisting with planning, creating and scheduling engaging social media content across Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and LinkedIn
• Work with the team to develop creative, trend-aware content and campaigns that boosts engagement and attracts new followers
• Keep track of relevant awareness days/weeks and help develop content around them 
• Assist with research for content generation and storytelling ideas 
• Create and edit short-form video content for social media, campaigns, and fundraising moments 
• Adapt content into formats suitable for different platforms and different audiences, including young people 
• Repurpose existing content into new formats (e.g., infographics, Reels, stories, carousels, blog snippets) 
• Maintain brand consistency across all visual and written output 
• Capture live content at events (including supporting and cheering on our challenge event runners!)
• Any other tasks that would be deemed suitable within this role as directed.

What We’re Looking For:

• Warm, welcoming and friendly person
• Creative, reliable and able to work independently  
• Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
• Interested in and experienced with video editing, content creation across social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Tiktok

Join our warehouse teams in the vital role of Volunteer Warehouse Assistant, to help handle food deliveries and prepare orders for charities and community groups.

Duties may include

• Picking & packing food items ready for despatch or collection.
• Performing physical tasks including lifting, loading, moving and storing goods.
• Recording quantities and types of food.
• Checking labels and dates on food.
• Following instructions - adhering to Health & Safety and Food Safety procedures.
• Keeping work areas clean & tidy.

You will need to be

Be at the heart of our operations! 

Help ensure food is successfully collected from our suppliers and delivered safely to charities and community groups.

Duties may include

• Safely driving our vans to deliver food to charities and community groups.
• Loading and unloading food.
• Completing paperwork.
• Assisting with routine van checks & vehicle maintenance.
• Reporting any accidents or damage.
• Representing the Company in a courteous and professional manner.

You will need to be

• You must be confident driving and handling vans (Sprinter & Ford Transits) and feel comfortable driving them, we’d love to hear from you.
• You must be over 18, have a full licence and be confident driving a van.
• Able to read maps/ use Sat Nav.
• Able to commit to a shift pattern.
• Numerate and literate.

A bit about this role

As a charity we can continue to help cats and kittens in need thanks to the donations we receive at fundraising events from generous members of the public. Our fundraising event helpers have the exciting and varied role of helping at local fundraising events - such as cakes sales, barn dances, quiz nights – and everything in between!

You can expect us to

• make you feel welcome, included and respected in line with our values and behaviours
• support you in having a positive and impactful experience at Cats Protection
• cover agreed out-of-pocket expenses in line with our Expenses Policy
• provide you with access to learning, development and engagement opportunities

What we need from you

• help set up and/or man stalls at events
• help on collection days like supermarket collections events or street collections
• help at fundraising events such as quiz nights, cake sales and dances
• promoting a professional image of Cats Protection at events

Time expectation

This role is really flexible! You could choose to volunteer at one event for a couple of hours or attend multiple fundraising events.

We’ll keep you up to date with upcoming local events where volunteers are needed. You’ll then be able to choose which events you’d like to volunteer at and how many hours you’d like to give. However much time you can give, your contribution will help raise much needed funds to continue the work of Cats Protection.

• Face-to-face fundraising – organising or helping at fundraising events, running supermarket collections and fundraising stands, and monitoring collection tins
• Online fundraising – setting up online appeals and writing engaging cat case studies to maximise donations
• Marketing and promotion – spreading the word about fundraising activities via social media and local press
• Administration – processing donations, sorting and recording donated goods, and completing Gift Aid paperwork
• Championing our work – helping to develop new fundraising ideas and increasing community engagement
• Photography – capturing images of cats in care, cats we’re helping, fundraising events, and all things Cats Protection

Time commitment

This role is flexible and designed to fit around your other commitments. You’ll be part of a friendly team raising vital funds — and having fun along the way.

Come and join the team at Hampton Court Palace Pink Ribbon Walk on Saturday 18 April 2026. We need friendly, enthusiastic volunteers to help welcome our walkers, support them out on the route, and cheer them across the finish line

About this volunteering opportunity 

We’re expecting hundreds of walkers to take part in our 10 mile Pink Ribbon Walks. You’ll be part of the 100-strong support team on the day, helping to make sure they have a safe, fun experience while they raise funds for our world-class research and life-changing support. 

What will I be doing? 

• From welcoming and registering our walkers in the event village, to running a snack station on the route, to cheering and handing out medals at the finish line - there’s a role for everyone at a Pink Ribbon Walk! 
• You’ll be that friendly face, making sure our walkers get the support and encouragement they need, when they need it

What do I get out of it?

What skills or qualities do I need?

• Bags of enthusiasm! Able to quickly connect with and uplift people
• Happy to work as part of a team or independently
• Flexibility - we need you to be available between 8am and 4pm, but we don’t expect you to volunteer all day! 

How will you support me? 

• You’ll get an info pack well in advance, to help you plan for your big day! 
• You’ll get a full briefing from the staff team on the day
• You’ll get a free hot meal (and breakfast if you start early)
