We support people irrespective of age, gender or when the abuse occured.
SV 2 is at an exciting point in our development, with changes across victim and survivor services coming over the next 12-18 months as a result of a refreshed commitment from government to effectively reduce the number of victims and ensure that victims and survivors receive the highest quality of support at the right time.
After 4 years in post, our existing chair has decided to step down, although she will remain on the board. To support us through our next period of development we're looking for a new chair who can provide leadership to the board and support to the executive team. We’re looking for someone with a passion for ensuring that victims and survivors get the right support, at the right time and that their voices shape our services. This might be through professional or lived experience, or through your own interests.
Our chair needs to understand what good governance looks like and to be able to ensure that SV 2's board arrangements are inclusive, equitable and accessible. We welcome applicants from all sectors, including people for whom this would be their first role as chair. Our current board is comprised primarily of members with public and private sector professional experience.
As the incoming chair you will receive a full handover from the outgoing Chair, who is remaining on the board, alongside a full induction from the Board and the Chief Executive in the role and responsibilities of trustees and the work of SV 2 to ensure that they are supported and empowered to undertake this vital role. We're particularly keen to hear from potential trustees from backgrounds we know are under-represented in our sector. This includes men, people who are LGBTQ+ and people from Black, Asian or other ethnic minority backgrounds.
Full role descriptions are provided in our application pack. These roles are subject to DBS checks and attendance of at least 75% at board meetings. We’re a charity and a company limited by guarantee.

We're England's leading creative writing charity for young people. Our professional writers empower students from under-resourced and under-represented communities with the confidence and skills to tell their own stories.
Our year-long enrichment provision combines deep learning for a core cohort, with opportunities for the whole school to benefit from writing creatively. It's a fulfilling extracurricular programme, including workshops, events, competitions, training and support for teachers, plus exceptional progression routes for participants. Over the past 14 years we have expanded into four English regions - London, East Midlands, Yorkshire and North West.
We are looking for two new trustees to join the board who will support us to deliver our new strategy Reach and Impact and to make a real difference with your skills and experience. It is an exciting time - we aim to grow our programmes reaching more young people and building exciting future progression routes for them. We are especially keen to attract applicants from the communities we serve. We welcome applicants based in all our regions and people with diverse socio-economic and heritage backgrounds.
Term of service
Trustees of First Story are usually expected to serve for a minimum of four years. After the period of four years, a trustee's commitment may be extended for another term by mutual agreement.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for people who are committed to our values and who can take a role in steering the charity for the future and champion our work externally. Each of our board members brings something different to the board; we work as a team, but we value everyone's individual contribution. You don't need experience of being a board member, but you will need:
- Time and willingness to take part
- Willingness to learn and improve your contribution over time
- an ability to think strategically and to make constructive criticisms of management reports, finances, forward plans, overall objectives, major resourcing issues and potential risks. As board members, it is more important that we ask intelligent questions than know the answers.
- Be over 18 years of age

About the British Youth Council
The British Youth Council is the National Youth Council of the UK. A youth-led charity, we empower young people aged 25 and under to influence and inform the decisions that affect their lives. We support young people to get involved in their communities and democracy locally, nationally and internationally, making a difference as volunteers, campaigners, decision-makers and leaders.
We are young people - and our charity aims to help other young people, whatever their background or barriers they face, to make the world a better place for us all.
Responsibilities of Trustees
The Board of Trustees is legally responsible for the charity - this is a significant responsibility and one that should not be taken lightly. Trustees have responsibility for ensuring the charity is well run, financially secure, and doing the work it is meant to be doing. There are specific legal and other duties. It is recommended you look at the Charity Commission 'The Essential Trustee' guidance.
As a charity and a company, we have two legal documents that govern how we run. These are called the "Memorandum and Articles of Association". We also have a Rulebook which governs how things work within the British Youth Council. Copies of the legal documents and Rulebook can be found here: www.byc.org.uk/aboutus/our-governance. You can also view our profile on the Charity Commission website. If you want to find out more about our current board of trustees visit: www.byc.org.uk/aboutus/meet-us/our-board.
Trustees are volunteers; they are not paid. Reasonable expenses can, however, be reimbursed (e.g. to cover travel costs). Remuneration is available for the Chair in connection with the duties carried out, over and above that of a trustee.
As well as the legal duties and those detailed in the Charity Commission guidance, the British Youth Council defines the responsibilities of the Board in its rule book and these can be summarised as follows:
- to set the vision, values and objectives of the organisation;
- to develop the strategic direction of the organisation, sometimes using subcommittee to do this work;
- to act on behalf of the British Youth Council as a decision making body on some policy matters as set in Council Meetings;
- to appoint from its members and from member organisations, representatives as necessary;
- to represent the Council to other bodies, and allocate representation opportunities to the most appropriate committees;
- to be responsible for all financial and legal aspects of the organisation, including buildings property and assets of the British Youth Council;
- to promote the British Youth Council to external organisations, and review and develop partnerships;
- to be responsible for the appraisal of their own work.
As a Trustee, you would be acting collectively as part of the Board of Trustees. Together, the Board is responsible for all of the points above.
Role Description: Chair
The Chair provides leadership and direction to the Board of Trustees, enabling them to fulfill their responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity. Working with Trustees and the Senior Management Team to deliver and further develop the charity's strategy. Working in partnership with the Chief Executive, they will ensure Trustees' decisions are acted upon and the Charity is managed in an effective manner, in accordance with the Memorandum and Articles, along with legal and regulatory guidelines.
Knowledge, experience and skills
We want to make sure the Board of Trustees has members with a range of knowledge and skills. We don't expect everyone to have knowledge of every area but between us we need to be able to cover all the skills.
To be eligible to apply to be the Chair of the Board you must have previous experience on a charity board that is comparable to the British Youth Council.
Diversity and Inclusion
Being inclusive is a fundamental value of the British Youth Council. We welcome applications from all eligible young people and are particularly keen to receive applications from young people who:
- Identify as Black, Asian or from a minority ethnic community; and/or
- Live in and/or are from Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland.
