Job description

Imagine not being able to move, sleep, or smile. Feeling anxious or depressed and struggling to think or remember. Your body not feeling like your own. This is what Parkinson's can feel like.

Your mum, son or friend. Anyone can get Parkinson’s, young or old. Every hour, two people in the UK are told they have Parkinson's – a progressive neurological condition. It causes problems in the brain and gets worse over time. Currently there is no cure.

We’re close to major breakthroughs. Funding the right research into the most promising treatments, we get closer to a cure every day.

Until then, we're here for everyone affected by Parkinson’s. Fighting for fair treatment and better services.

We are Parkinson's UK. Powered by people. Together we'll find a cure. Join us.

About the role

The charity is in the first year of a new 5 year strategy (2020-2025) with income expected to be nearly £36m by the end of 2019.  The Board and its committees take on the challenge of governing the charity with diligence and enthusiasm. Our trustees and independent committee members come from a wide range of backgrounds and have diverse experience, which we draw on to guide and oversee the charity’s work. As part of our succession planning, we are recruiting a Finance Trustee Designate to work alongside our incumbent Finance Trustee and become an active member of our Audit and Risk Committee.

In the role of Finance Trustee Designate you will use your specialist financial and commercial experience to provide crucial expertise, guidance and leadership to our Board and its committees which is key to the charity achieving its ambitious goals.

As a member of our Audit and Risk Committee, you will provide valuable expertise and knowledge to help the Board manage risk and properly discharge its responsibilities by ensuring that the Charity has effective internal control systems and is operating within approved policies, its budget, and the law.

What you'll do

To be successful in these roles we are looking for a senior commercial finance professional who will be a trusted advisor to the Board and sub-committees. You will be a visible ambassador for the charity promoting our work across all networks, with the ability to build strong and effective relationships with all key stakeholders.

As a critical friend to the Director of Resources and Deputy Director of Finance, you will provide guidance and support in the preparation of financial papers to committees and the board to help ensure these papers provide the necessary information and analysis to aid effective financial decision-making.

This combined role offers a real opportunity to make a powerful impact!

What you'll bring

We welcome applications from candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Commitment to the aims and values of Parkinson’s UK
  • Understanding of the duties and responsibilities of being a Board and committee member
  • Strong commercial finance experience
  • Extensive experience and understanding of financial and risk management
  • Understanding of the role of audit (internal and/or external)
  • Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort
