At The Hygiene Bank, our volunteers are the heart and soul of everything we do and achieve as a charity. Without the incredible individuals up and down the country who generously give their time to run our local hygiene bank projects, collecting and distributing essential products through our network of community partners, our charity simply wouldn’t exist.
The Hygiene Bank aspires to build the best recruited, best trained and best supported community of volunteers in the charity sector. The extraordinary commitment, dedication, enthusiasm and sheer hard work of our nearly 600 volunteers underpins our current operations and our future plans. In particular, our volunteers and projects are central to our aspirations to engage Parliamentarians and other key stakeholders, and to raise awareness of hygiene poverty, in support of our goal to end it for good.
Thanks to a generous grant, we are now able to recruit a Volunteer Engagement Officer, who will play a pivotal role supporting and empowering this brilliant community. As such, you will play a key part in shaping the future of a national anti-poverty charity working on a key social justice challenge.

About The Hygiene Bank
Hygiene poverty is not being able to afford many of the everyday hygiene and personal grooming products most of us take for granted. The reality of low income is that it restricts people’s options, leaving us caught between being able to heat our homes, pay the rent, eat, or be clean. It is washing hair, bodies, faces and clothes in the same cheap washing-up liquid used for the dishes. It is not being able to replace a toothbrush when needed or sharing a toothbrush because one each just isn't an option. It is having to choose between shaving foam and razors or the transport fare to a job interview.
Hygiene Poverty is the hidden crisis facing the UK. In 2024, The Hygiene Bank published a research report into the incidence and impact of hygiene poverty. It found that over 4.2m adults in the UK are affected by hygiene poverty, that is an additional 1.1m people into hygiene poverty since 2022 - the equivalent of the population of Birmingham.
Hygiene poverty is not only on the rise, it’ is also undermining the nation’s health: 50% of those affected by hygiene poverty say that it is causing them anxiety or depression. 92% of people affected report that it limits their social interactions with friends and family. 54% of those affected have not gone to the dentist in the last 12 months. But most importantly, it’s putting people in impossible situations. A staggering 69% of adults experiencing hygiene poverty are having to make the difficult decision between paying for essential needs like food and bills or purchasing basic toiletries. 65% of parents affected by hygiene poverty have had to choose between buying hygiene products for themselves or their children.

About the role
Reporting into the Operations Manager, this role will be part of the Operations Team and will work closely with the Partnership Managers who support our projects and volunteers on a day-to-day basis. You will provide exceptional service to the volunteer journey and experience, including recruitment, training and engagement.
Responsibilities (with estimate % of time in role)

Recruitment 20%: (Year 1 priority) Design and implement compelling volunteer recruitment campaigns at a national level and for specific areas of the UK - in line with the organisational strategy.

Virtual Volunteering 5%: Develop our offer for volunteers to bring their skills, experience and time to the charity outside our local community and project structures, for example coordinating volunteers who can support local projects with social media, or with fundraising.

Onboarding 10%: Design and run the volunteer onboarding process, ensuring that all of our volunteers have the tools they need to be successful

Governance 10%: (Year 1 priority) Administrate and coordinate the Volunteer Council, a new Committee designed to centre volunteer voice in the charity’s governance

Consultation 10%: Further develop the charity’s volunteer survey and create ongoing opportunities for genuine feedback and consultation from our volunteer community to amplify their lived experience

Training 20%: (Year 1 priority) Identify areas for training, source and develop these, providing exciting and effective opportunities for our volunteers to develop their skills, practice and impact

Resources 10%: (Year 1 priority) Working with the Partnership Managers and other colleagues in the central team, design and develop video and written resources to support the projects in their day-to-day work. The postholder will also hold responsibility for the Volunteer Members’ Area, ensuring content is up to date, relevant and useful

Communications 10%: Working closely with our communications team, collate compelling, informative and engaging content and write the monthly volunteers’ newsletter, ensuring volunteers’ achievements are celebrated, that they understand and are involved in the charity’s development. You will also be responsible for developing new and effective communication channels.

Data 5%: through collecting and sharing data on our volunteers and their experience with the charity, you will report on progress and suggest ways to continuously improve our offer. You will also ensure that data is captured appropriately on our systems.

The role is remote based, but with bi-monthly full organisation team days in London. In addition, we have approximately 4 Operations Team meetings in London or other central UK location. Experience
You will have a minimum of two years’ experience in the following:

Experience of supporting the volunteer journey, delivering work on the planning, recruitment, induction and engagement of volunteers across a dispersed geography.

Job Summary
To ensure the appropriate care and protection of children and adults at risk, who are using Mental Health Innovations (MHI)’ services, and to take appropriate actions to safeguard those identified as being at risk of significant harm.
Key Responsibilities
- Alongside the Designated Safeguarding Lead/Safeguarding Manager, contribute to ensuring that everyone working or volunteering with children, young people, and adults at risk of harm at Mental Health Innovations understands the safeguarding policies and procedures and knows what to do if they have concerns about a child’s or adult’s welfare.
- Implement Mental Health Innovations’ safeguarding policies and procedures, ensuring all concerns are responded to appropriately.
- Deliver training to the MHI workforce around safeguarding processes and thresholds.
- Respond to information that may constitute a safeguarding concern for children or adults at risk of harm, including:
- assessing and clarifying information
- reporting and recording safeguarding issues as they arise
- responding to and supporting staff who raise concerns live in the moment on the Shout/The Mix platforms, including counsellors
- making referrals to statutory organisations as appropriate
- consulting with and informing relevant members of the safeguarding management team
- following the organisational safeguarding policy and procedures
- Be aware of PREVENT concerns and ensure the Prevent Duty is followed and adhered to.
- Regularly liaise with, share information with, and, when necessary, make formal referrals to statutory agencies such as social services, police, and ambulance services.

Friends of Ibba Girls School, South Sudan (FIGS) was set up in 2011 in response to a specific request from local community leaders to help them translate into reality their vision to build and develop a girls’ boarding school in South Sudan in order to enable girls to complete primary and secondary education rather than drop out of school due to poverty and family pressures.
FIGS has raised over £4.9 million over the last 10 years, particularly through relational fundraising from the wide network of individuals who donate through regular giving, mainly in the UK but also internationally. Other sources of funds include schools, churches, trusts and foundations, corporates, and business philanthropists, as well as a yearly campaign through the Big Give Christmas Challenge.
FIGS has a committed and hardworking body of trustees, chaired by Chris Trott, former British Ambassador to South Sudan, and now British Ambassador to the Holy See based in the Vatican City, Rome. The charity currently employs 2 staff who work on fundraising, communications and administration.
In 2023 FIGS Trustees commissioned Windle Trust International (a well-managed UK charity with a long track record of effective work in South Sudan and sub-Saharan Africa) to act as FIGS managing agents in South Sudan, and to provide professional, technical and management advice and support to Ibba Girls Boarding School (IGBS).
Ibba Girls Boarding School (IGBS)
Ibba Girls Boarding School (IGBS) now educates over 300 primary and secondary school girls from across the whole of Western Equatoria State (an area the size of Scotland but less densely populated) and employs 42 staff (teachers, matrons, cooks, grounds maintenance, night guards and other support staff). The school is on a large, 100-acre green campus and provides not only high-quality teaching in the core subjects on the national curriculum, but also a wide range of co-curriculum subjects like drama, debating, sewing, and farming.
Since its opening in 2014, IGBS has become recognised as a tried and tested visible demonstration of the benefits of boarding school education in South Sudan, where most girls drop out from school before the end of primary and very few complete their secondary qualifications. IGBS is making a substantial impact across South Sudan, by providing good quality “all-through” integrated girls’ schooling, for both primary and secondary girls, from any background and of any faith or none.
IGBS is achieving both tangible and intangible measures of success, including reduced drop out from school; excellent exam results; a safe, stimulating, happy and nurturing culture; empowering young women who can exercise leadership locally and nationally for this new nation (independent since 2011). IGBS is now attracting widespread recognition in South Sudan for lifting standards of teaching and learning, and acting as a beacon of light and hope, whose example can gradually ripple out to other schools across South Sudan.
The Opportunity
This is a great moment of opportunity for a highly experienced fundraising and communications professional with a strong and demonstrable track record to play a crucial role (alongside a subgroup of trustees and two paid staff) in reviewing and refreshing FIGS’ fundraising strategy for the short, medium and longer term, and in raising FIGS’ profile through strategic communications. This will support FIGS to reach ambitious fundraising targets to allow us to increase the number of girls in the school to full capacity and implement multiple capital projects on the school campus over the next 5 years. The fundraising challenge also includes deepening and expanding FIGS’ donor base, while sustaining and engaging the large network of existing supporters and loyal donors, supported by effective communications and PR. You will lead and direct the fundraising work and will use your skills across a wide range of fundraising functions, including cultivating gifts from wealthy philanthropists, and through wills and bequests. You will also lead on delivering FIGS’ communications strategy, identifying opportunities to raise its profile with target audiences using a variety of relevant communications channels. You will have experience of digital and social media campaigns, and will oversee the development and dissemination of strategic communications materials in support of FIGS’ fundraising and profile-raising objectives. You will ideally have experience working on projects in fragile or developing contexts and an interest in education and gender equity.
There is plenty to enjoy in the varied work, where one can see visible results not only in FIGS’ fundraising targets, but also in the impact it has on the school, its students and staff, parents and communities across Western Equatoria State and across the nation of South Sudan.
Key Responsibilities
- To support the design and delivery of FIGS’ fundraising strategy and action plan, achieving or exceeding targets and KPIs, both financial and non-financial, as agreed with the Chair of FIGS Trustees, Treasurer and Chair of its fundraising sub-group
- To oversee and deliver FIGS’ communications strategy, and raise its profile with existing and new audiences through strategic communications and PR
- To widen the existing network of donors, based on relationship development and management
- To maintain active engagement with existing supporters and donors
- To identify and generate new fundraising opportunities, from the corporate and philanthropic sectors, as well as from other organizations, groups and individuals
- To generate a pipeline of activities across a range of fundraising streams
- To undertake PR and communications work in order to support the fundraising strategy
- To lead the design and distribution of PR and comms materials, including website, regular newsletter, leaflets, social media.
- To line manage FIGS fundraising and comms staff
- To produce progress reports for FIGS Trustees about fundraising in relation to targets and budget and make recommendations for future workstreams
- To attend key fundraising and supporter events to generate significant income, support and profile
- To act as an ambassador for FIGS
- To ensure fundraising and comms activities are in line with FIGS’ values and policies, relevant legislation and the Fundraising Regulator Code of Practice.
The selection process and how to apply
The post can be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis (where part-time is at least 24 hours a week). Hours can be flexible by arrangement. The person will work mainly from home, liaising online with FIGS and WTI Trustees, staff, and volunteers and with the Board of Governors and Head Teacher of the school in South Sudan.
Some travel to fundraising and communications events in London and elsewhere will be needed. A three-year rolling contract will be offered in the first instance, with annual review and the potential for extension, subject to achievement of agreed performance measures and targets. The salary is in the range of £45-70K (or pro rata) depending on track record and experience.

Join our team and help us improve public sector food across the UK with our School Plates and new Hospital Plates programmes. We're looking for a passionate and driven Chef Trainer to support schools and hospitals in delivering healthier and more sustainable menus.
The programmes continue to go from strength to strength. Through School Plates, we currently support over a third of all UK local authorities, catering for more than 12,000 schools and feeding over 1.25 million children daily. To date, we have been responsible for swapping over 50 million school meals from meat-based to meat-free or plant-based. We're now expanding our successful model into the health sector with our new Hospital Plates programme, bringing the same positive change to patient and staff menus.
Are you a skilled chef trainer with a passion for improving public food? Can you match our ambition? You'll be using your culinary expertise to train catering teams in both schools and hospitals, provide menu advice, and get involved with recipe development and culinary education. Recipe Development & Training: You'll co-lead the creation, testing, and development of new plant-based recipes for our school and hospital programmes, and lead on developing ‘grab-and-go’ and internationally inspired options for secondary schools.
