Job description

Do you have experience of working with vulnerable people and/or people with multiple and complex needs within a safeguarding framework, possibly in an environment that involved giving specialist level debt advice? Then join Shelter as an Advice, Support and Guidance Worker - Debt and you could soon be playing an important role in an initiative aimed at supporting disadvantaged people overcome complex barriers and move towards work and training.

In response to growing needs, Shelter Lancashire is developing its service offer under the Building Better Opportunities programme to provide specialist level debt advice. Building Better Opportunities is funded by The National Lottery Community Fund and the European Social Fund (ESF) 2014-2020, investing in local projects tackling the root causes of poverty, promoting social inclusion and driving local jobs and growth.

Three Building Better Opportunities (BBO) projects in Lancashire are being delivered by a partnership of 45 social enterprise and community organisations, led by Selnet (the Social Enterprise Lancashire Network).'Age of Opportunity' supports people over 50, 'Invest in Youth' supports 15-24-year olds and 'Changing Futures' supports people with multiple and complex barriers to employment. Over the lifetime of the programme, 6,230 disadvantaged people will be supported to overcome complex barriers and move towards work and training.

About the Role
This particular post is designed to be flexible to reflect the needs of the service and involves working as part of a wider team on a project to deliver specialist debt advice and support to clients. This will include advice around income maximisation through to full debt advice and solutions, including insolvency options. Indeed, it could cover a range of activities, from providing advice to working closely with clients to help them achieve sustainability in the future, depending on the need in the local area. Inputting client data onto our case management system and providing ongoing casework are important aspects of the role too. And, when it comes to providing briefings and updates to other agencies or providing cover and/or taking on additional/alternative responsibilities when required, again, we'll count on you.

About you
To succeed, you'll need a proven track record of providing advice and support to vulnerable clients and operating within a safeguarding framework. You'll also need experience of managing your own caseload, providing quality casework and adhering to multiple deadlines. The ability to research caseload and legislation and to utilise that in your day to day role is important too, as is a flair for preparing, planning and delivering briefings and/or group work sessions. Self-motivated, results-driven and commercially aware, you have the communication skills it takes to work with a wide variety of statutory and non-statutory stakeholders and are proficient using office IT, including case management systems.
