Hillside Clubhouse is recruiting an IPS Employment Specialist to join our dynamic Islington team, supporting people with mental health conditions to gain and retain employment. The IPS Employment Specialists within the Islington IPS Service work within the nationally recognised IPS (Individual Placement and Support) model within NHS secondary and primary care mental health teams, based in the heart of Islington.

Who We Are:
Hillside Clubhouse is a co-produced mental health employment support charity working across Islington. We support people with mental health conditions into training, volunteering, and employment opportunities. People can access our services via our Clubhouse, where they can share their skills and expertise with others and support the running of the charity. Alternatively, they can receive support out in the community from one of our Employment Specialists based within NHS mental health teams.
The Role:
We are recruiting for one IPS Employment Specialist role within our Islington IPS Service. This position will be based within the North London NHS Foundation Trust mental health services in the borough of Islington.
As an IPS Employment Specialist, you’ll play an important role in supporting people with lived mental health experience on their recovery journey by supporting them back into paid employment. This is an opportunity to offer ongoing support, to motivate and provide people with hope, while developing the tools and skills required to recover - ultimately transforming their lives.
A variety of skills are needed in this post including but not limited to: a strong ability to develop empathy and rapport with clients; a determined approach to seeking out job opportunities; a person centric-approach to working with people; strong communications skills to motivate clients; strong administrative capabilities and an attention to detail engage with prospective employers via business development and face-to-face meetings, as well as to be able to challenge some perceptions around mental health.
The postholder will be directly employed by Hillside Clubhouse but work under an Honorary Contract from the North London NHS Foundation Trust. They will be managed directly by the IPS Operations Manager but work as team member within the clinical team. The role is dynamic and involves being integrated in a clinical team, working within the community, and we operate a flexible working policy where working from home is also permitted up to two days per week.
Overall Aim:
To enable people with mental health issues to gain and sustain competitive employment by working within the evidence-based Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model.

Position: Careers Specialist
Location: Hybrid – London Waterloo office
Salary: £32,000 – £34,500 per annum (depending on experience)
Contract: Fixed term until December 2026 (with possibility of extension)
Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday)
Start Date: February / March 2026
Benefits: 27 days annual leave plus the 1st Friday of every month as a half day.
3% pension contribution after 3 months of service.

About the Role
As a Careers Specialist, you will play a key role in supporting and empowering young people to overcome barriers to employment and progress towards meaningful, sustainable careers. You will build trusted relationships, broaden horizons and inspire ambition, using a person-centred and strengths-based approach.
Through personalised Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG), workshops and employer engagement, you will help young people develop confidence, employability skills and clear career pathways, ensuring they feel supported every step of the way.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide individual, person-centred IAG to young people, supporting them to identify and achieve their career goals
- Identify and create opportunities for employment, education and training aligned to participants’ interests and aspirations
- Deliver workshops, group sessions and outreach activities across multiple London boroughs
- Support young people with CVs, applications, interview preparation and professional skills development
- Maintain an inclusive, client-centred approach, sensitive to diverse backgrounds and experiences
- Record and monitor participant progress using internal databases and contribute to reporting for funders and partners
- Work collaboratively with delivery partners to achieve agreed outcomes and milestones
- Represent the programme at internal and external meetings, sharing learning and good practice
- Contribute to a positive, supportive and learning-focused team culture
About You
You will be resilient, empathetic and solutions-focused, with a strong belief in the potential of every young person. You will be confident working with individuals facing complex barriers and skilled at motivating, engaging and empowering others.
You will be organised, adaptable and comfortable managing a varied caseload, while working both independently and collaboratively within a supportive team.
Experience, Qualifications and Skills
Essential:
- At least 2 years’ experience supporting young people or adults from disadvantaged or underrepresented backgrounds into employment, education or training
- Proven ability to build trust and work effectively with individuals with complex needs
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience delivering employability workshops, training sessions or group activities
- Sound understanding of safeguarding and risk management
- Strong organisational, time management and record-keeping skills
- Confidence using IT systems and databases (e.g. Salesforce or similar CRM tools)
- Resilient, adaptable and committed to helping young people reach their full potential

These roles will support a small caseload of individuals with a range of needs who are looking to move into work, enabling them to find the right opportunities and sustain the roles through in-work support. The coaches will also need to be skilled in working with employers to support them to make their roles accessible and sustainable. Growing and maintaining a strong employer base will be a central part of these exciting new roles.

· Full UK drivers’ licence and use of own vehicle
Core Competencies
· Maths and English GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent)
· Experience working in employment services supporting people to obtain or keep work
· Proven experience of meeting and exceeding outcomes and targets
· An understanding of the employment needs, and challenges faced by people who experience labour market exclusion
· Experience of working with someone on a one-to-one basis
· Experience of providing supported employment services
