Job description

The University of Leicester is seeking a dynamic Director, with a passion for championing diversity and inclusion, to take the Attenborough Arts Centre (AAC) to the next stage of its development both as a cultural leader in the sector but also as a ground-breaking, creative hub, fostering public engagement in the arts for university staff, students and communities.

Our Director, Michaela Butter MBE, will shortly be retiring after 12 years leading the AAC through a major period of growth supported by Arts Council England as a National Portfolio client. Audiences have increased from 25,000 in 2010 to over 110,000 and the venue doubled in size with the creation of a major gallery extension for the display of contemporary art.  A new commissioning programme, craft shop and award-winning education and outreach programme were established, alongside a new Creative Fellowship programme to foster links between artists and academic research.

The AAC now has a national reputation for the quality and range of its inclusive and multi-disciplinary programme, which fosters creative risk taking and talent development whilst removing barriers to access, working closely with a strong network of local, national and international creative partners.

The successful candidate will lead on developing a cultural policy for the wider university with links to research and teaching excellence.  You will have a proven track record both as a strategic thinker but also as somebody who delivers results. You will have strong negotiating and influencing skills for fostering creative and funding partnerships; recognise the opportunities and challenges of working within a complex environment and command respect from both staff and artists in recognition of your dynamism and strong inter-personal skills.

Interviews will take place on Thursday 13th January 2022 with an expected starting date of mid- April 2022 subject to notice periods, to allow time to feed into the next NPO funding application.
