About the Role
We are looking for a Chief Operations Officer to lead the operations team, join the management team and support the CEO. The BNSSG VCSE Alliance is a collaborative network of over 200 voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations working across Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG). Tasks and Responsibilities

About the role
As the Senior Programme Development Specialist, you will manage a pipeline of institutional funding opportunities and be responsible for securing a significant proportion of CIUK’s restricted income. You will work in partnership with CARE country offices, national and international partners, finance colleagues, and technical advisory teams to identify, scope, bid for and secure new funding for programmes through both grant and commercial contract modalities. You will deliver a high-quality bidding process, submitting applications to funders such as FCDO, DEC, START Fund, Education Cannot Wait, Jersey Overseas Aid Committee, and Power of Nutrition. You will build learning from existing CARE programmes into bid design and design programmes in line with CARE policies and standards, as well as donor standards.
About you
You are a passionate and experienced funding specialist, with a proven track record in fundraising from key UK donors – including solid experience of commercial bidding and FCDO frameworks, trusts and foundations and corporate donors. You will have the ability to lead and coordinate multi-disciplinary teams during proposal preparation, working with partners and colleagues in multiple locations. You have experience in and very good understanding of programme design and meeting institutional and corporate donor requirements. You have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. You are capable of building strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders; you are a positive collaborator and a strong team player.

The Opportunity
This is a senior leadership appointment, reporting to the Director of Resources and leading a Finance team of around nine, including the payroll function. We are seeking an ambitious and motivated Head of Research to oversee the delivery of our research funding programme. You will ensure our funding is delivered strategically with the greatest impact possible for people affected by MND. You will manage our research team to oversee the development and delivery of effective funding schemes, partnerships and initiatives, whilst ensuring the outputs of our research are monitored and evaluated, to communicate our impact and inform our future activities.
This is a key role in our small, agile organisation that will involve close working across the charity, and the research community. Team Structure:
You will report to the Director of Research and manage a team of four: three Research Programme Managers and a Research Officer.
Key responsibilities:
Have day-to-day responsibility for distribution of the charity’s research funding, developing detailed annual plans and delivering against time and budget;
Be responsible for overseeing governance and compliance for all research funding activities, including adherence to standards set by the Association of Medical Research Charities;
Identify opportunities for improvements to grant management systems, processes and documentation and work closely with the research team to ensure they are implemented;

Skills and experience required:
Educated to postgraduate level, or with similar experience in a relevant biomedical science subject e.g. biochemistry, molecular sciences, neuroscience, pharmacology;
Working experience of drug discovery, gained either in the bio-pharmaceutical industry or an academic setting;
Significant experience in research management, ideally within a charity or government funding organisation;
Proven leadership and people management skills with direct line management experience;
