About the Team:
This position will be based in the WaterAid UK Programme Operations Team within the International Programmes Department (IPD). IPD operates in over 17 countries with approximately 600 staff in total. The Programme Operations Team enables the effective management of the International Programmes Directorate (IPD) through the provision of robust high quality programme management policies, processes, tools, management information and systems.

About the Role:
The primary focus of the role is to support Country Programmes and Regional Teams in both project and programme design. This is primarily by (1) directly supporting the design and set up of specific projects, programmes and proposals, and (2) strengthening capacity of specific staff in project and programme design.

In this role, you will:

Support project (and programme) design and set-up processes 

• Lead, facilitate, support and advise on quality project design and project set-up processes, focusing particularly on larger, complex or higher risk projects. These may be individual Country Programme or multi-country/region projects designed at the regional or global level.
• Review and provide feedback on project design outputs to help strengthen their quality. This could include situational analyses, theories of change, results frameworks, monitoring and evaluation plans, risk analyses, narrative proposals and budgets.
• Liaise closely with identified technical and policy specialists during project design and set-up processes to ensure projects are designed to deliver sustainable outcomes and align with Global and Country Programme Strategies, Quality Programme Standards and thematic approaches. 
• In specific cases, support Country Programmes in the development/adaptation of their long-term programme plans and linked project portfolios

Strengthen organisational capacity in project design and project set-up 

• Build and strengthen capacity in project design across WaterAid (globally), targeting particular staff categories, through training, mentoring, coaching and the development/refreshing of tools and guidance
• Develop engaging training materials and examples.  

Strengthen project design and set-up guidance 

• Maintain and strengthen the project and programme planning component of WaterAid's Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting (PMER) core procedures (often referred in our sector as MEL or MEAL) based on internal learning and sector good practice

About You:

• Significant proven experience in designing complex projects under rigorous deadlines and involving multiple stakeholders
• Excellent understanding of project design theories and approaches and their practical application
• Proven ability to work collaboratively with technical programme advisors, fundraisers and finance staff in order to develop sustainable, high quality, suitably resourced projects with clearly defined monitoring and evaluation processes
• Demonstrated ability to effectively coach and train others in project design and implementation
• Excellent understanding of the project design requirements and approaches of different donors (e.g. GAC, FCDO, USAID)
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
• Strong interpersonal skills and networking skills with the ability to collaborate, influence and build alliances internally and externally
• Strong problem identification and problem solving skills
• Excellent computer literacy, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point etc.)
• Ability to travel up to 12 weeks per year
• Proven ability to work effectively with diverse cultures and adapt personal style to get the best out of others. 
• Graduate degree or equivalent professional qualification/experience in international development
• Highly organised and proactive with the proven ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks and a complex work programme within deadlines

• Lead the development of multi-channel marketing plans, with a focus on audience and insight.

• Cultivate collaborative relationships with key partners such as marketing agencies, production companies, and fulfilment agencies, motivating and inspiring them to deliver their best for Save the Children.

The role
This is a key role within the organisation, internally support the Senior Program Directors, as well as externally working directly with government partners to provide implementation guidance, in order to ensure the successful delivery of transformational, cross-sectoral initiatives in Sub-Saharan Africa.

In this role, you will review and develop program-related materials that drive strategic priorities; monitor program achievement progress; manage local consultants and technical assistance providers; provide financial oversight of grants; identify and highlight compelling stories about leaders with whom they work; document and help disseminate best practices across their programs; and track and document results across programs. 

This role is focused on working directly with inspiring government leaders to implement their human capital development goals for their people, and you will be expected to interface in a respectful, savvy, and non-prescriptive manner with government colleagues, while simultaneously providing the honest feedback of a true partner.

In this role you can expect a dynamic environment and a culture of collaboration, innovation, and drive for highly leveraged outcomes. 

Experience
To be successful you will need extensive experience in managing complex and large-scale program implementation, ideally in Sub-Saharan African countries. 

You will have a good understanding of how governmental departments work (ideally with direct experience working within government) and have had significant interactions at high policy levels within governments, with proven experience in managing complex and politically sensitive relationships with different stakeholders. 

Able to demonstrate methodical program oversight and management, you will need an exemplary work ethic with a drive for achieving concrete results from often complex environments.  You will be experienced in the use of program management tools such as dashboard creation, program monitoring and strategic planning and be able to example good financial acumen and excellent research and analytical skills, with ability to synthesise comparative research clearly. 

Knowledge wise we are looking for substantial, relevant expertise in one/some of the following: health, nutrition, job creation, urban development or education, ideally in Sub-Saharan Africa. This will include familiarity with evidence, key actors, and proven interventions in a broad range of human development areas. 

This role will suit someone who is used to working at the most senior levels and brings excellent people skills and highly developed communication, presentation, negotiation and influencing skills. Key responsibilities 

Organisational Leadership and line management 

• Deputise for the Director when necessary

Fundraising 

• Work with the Director and consultants to own and implement a robust fundraising strategy to support the organisation as it executes its new strategic plan 

• Develop processes for managing fundraising applications and stewardship of existing funders and supporters 

• Write and submit high quality, inspiring and tailored funding applications and reports for trusts and foundations (expected to be in the region of £10,000-150,000) 

• Identify and develop potential new funding opportunities for First Give, including major donors and corporate funders 

• Manage relationships with a set number of key funders, ensuring that we proactively seek feedback, engagement and involvement in our work 

New School Partner Recruitment 

• Oversee and co-ordinate all new school partner recruitment sales and marketing activity 

• Work with our marketing agency to develop and implement marketing campaigns 

• Support the Programmes Team to recruit new partner schools in priority regions 

• Proactively seek opportunities for growth of the First Give partners network 

• Develop and design and production of marketing and sales resources to support all sales activity 

• You may also be required to deliver sales meetings with networks including Headteacher meetings and attend conferences to promote the work of the charity 

Communications 

• Lead the development and manage the delivery of our communications strategy, including all messaging to key stakeholders via a range of appropriate channels, including newsletters, social media and our website

• Brand champion, ensuring that all external communications and resources are aligned with our brand identity and tone of voice

What you'll be doing:

Our Finance Department works as a team of experts to safeguard resources and support decision making across Shelter. Additionally, it would be an advantage if you have experience working in a Charity and have associated experience of managing restricted funds and fundraising.
