Job description

Strengthen the MA’s branch network and help grow, retain and engage its membership. Working with the Head of Membership, Events and Branch Development, the postholder will build relationships with branch volunteers and deliver practical initiatives that help branches thrive and members make the most of the MA.

This new role requires a proactive approach, combining initiative with hands-on support for active, inclusive and sustainable branches, in line with the MA’s charitable purpose and governance.

Key responsibilities

A. Branch development and support

  • Build trusted relationships with branch officers and volunteers, acting as a key contact for branch development and membership support.
  • Work with branches to identify local needs and agree practical plans for recruitment, induction, retention and engagement, providing additional support where needed.
  • Develop and share guidance, templates and good practice to help branches deliver local activities and reach members who face barriers to participation.
  • Build peer networks, including for branch membership secretaries and retired members, to encourage connections and mutual support.
  • Support volunteer development, recognition and succession planning to sustain active branch leadership.
  • Strengthen communication between branches and the national MA, ensuring local feedback informs wider priorities.

B. Membership engagement and activities

  • Working with the Head of Membership, develop and deliver initiatives to attract new members, retain existing members and re-engage lapsed members.
  • Work with colleagues on targeted communications and campaigns that help different member groups understand and access membership benefits and opportunities.
  • Support regional and national learning events and conferences, including administration and logistics.
  • Support Magistrates in the Community coordinators, working in conjunction with the Learning and Development Officer.

C. Insight and delivery

  • Use membership data and feedback to identify needs, monitor the impact of activities and recommend improvements.
  • Work collaboratively across the MA, maintaining accurate records, managing priorities and meeting agreed deadlines.
  • Represent the MA professionally and undertake other reasonable duties consistent with the role.

D. Support

Ad hoc duties to support organisation objectives.

Person specification

Essential

  • Experience in a membership organisation, charity, volunteer-led organisation or comparable environment, delivering engagement, recruitment, retention or community-building activities.
  • Strong relationship-building skills, with the ability to earn trust, support volunteers and work with people with different needs and perspectives.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, adapting information for different audiences.
  • Experience of coordinating projects, campaigns or events from planning to delivery, managing competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to turn feedback and membership information into practical improvements and monitor results.
  • Confident use of Microsoft Office and digital systems to maintain accurate records.
  • A proactive, resourceful approach, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a small team.
  • Commitment to an excellent member experience, equality, diversity and inclusion.

Desirable

  • Experience of supporting a geographically dispersed membership, local branches or volunteer-led committees.
  • Experience of developing member induction programmes or targeted engagement campaigns.
  • Experience of CRM systems, email marketing platforms or membership reporting tools.
  • Knowledge of the justice system and the role of magistrates.
  • At least five years’ experience volunteering as a magistrate and membership of the MA.
