Job Description
The Individual Giving Manager will build a programme with enormous growth potential. Working closely with the Director of Fundraising and colleagues across the charity, you will develop the Individual Giving strategy for Heart Research UK, establishing a robust programme of donor acquisition and supporter development, while focusing equally on supporter experience and retention to inspire long-term giving.
The Individual Giving Manager will be comfortable balancing strategic thinking and planning with hands-on delivery. They will have experience in using audience insight, data and continuous testing to identify the channels and products that deliver the greatest long-term value. They will focus on establishing a test, learn, tweak, test again culture that is driven by evidence, insight and return on investment.
Given the nature of the role, it will require the postholder to be able to manage their time and workload effectively across a variety of tasks, while actively contributing to our work to generate income and achieve our targets.
Key Responsibilities
·Work with the Director of Income Generation to develop and deliver an ambitious Individual Giving strategy that supports Heart Research UK’s fundraising and organisational growth objectives
·Develop and deliver acquisition activities already identified for the coming year, and identify opportunities for developing new products and propositions in the medium to long-term, focussing on meeting supporter needs and delivering sustainable income
·Develop an acquisition programme using a mix of digital and offline channels including:
oPaid social, search and other google platforms, email
oDirect mail – both warm and cold
oDRTV
oLottery
oFace to face
oTelemarketing
·Utilise modelling tools to secure investment for test, learn and optimisation activities, and then to forecast and reforecast returns on those activities as they progress. Using this insight, recommend future investment.
·Work with the CRM Manager to develop supporter journeys that maximise engagement, retention and lifetime value, and deliver the highest standards of supporter experience across channels
·Identify opportunities to deepen supporter relationships through cross-sell, upgrade and reactivation activity
·Lead relationships with third party agencies, following procurement procedures and managing agencies to ensure Heart Research UK gets the most value for our investment and that agencies behave in line with our values and policies
·Work with the Director of Income Generation to create and monitor budgets and forecasts, monitoring financial performance and contributing to annual budget cycles as well as longer-term forecasting
·Work collaboratively with colleagues across fundraising, communications and data to deliver activities, utilising project management tools and the CRM to ensure clear expectation setting and time management and to avoid project creep
·Share knowledge and champion best practice in Individual Giving and supporter insight across the organisation, for example identifying opportunities from within the Individual Giving programme to promote legacy giving, and contributing to the ongoing strategic development of the fundraising team
·Ensure all fundraising activity complies with relevant legislation such as GDPR, and adheres to the Fundraising Code of Practice as well as Heart Research UK’s fundraising policies

The Opportunity
This is a new and significant appointment for SWT UK. We are looking for a Director of Development to develop and lead our UK fundraising strategy – taking ownership of income generation across all streams, donor communications and supporter stewardship, and managing a team of three talented fundraising professionals.
Our individual supporter base is large globally – growing in UK – loyal and deeply engaged: many give through our elephant adoption programme, which connects them directly with named animals in our care. We are now ready to build on this engaged supporter base and develop it into a structured individual giving programme – with mid-level giving pathways, major donor cultivation, systematic stewardship and deeper philanthropic relationships. That is the central challenge and opportunity of this role.
We also have active corporate and trust relationships, a legacy programme in development, and real potential to grow income from European and international funders. The Director of Development will take ownership of all of this – hands on and strategic in equal measure.
What You Will Do
- Develop and implement a new UK fundraising strategy, establishing clear priorities, income targets and programmes that will drive growth through to 2030 and beyond
- Develop and implement a UK individual giving programme – building on our adoption base to create structured giving journeys, mid-level and major donor cultivation, and meaningful stewardship
- Manage the UK fundraising budget, set and monitor income targets across all streams, and report regularly to the Executive Director on performance and ROI
- Take day-to-day ownership of corporate and trust relationships, writing reports, proposals and partner communications
- Build a major donor programme from the ground up, identifying and cultivating high-value individual prospects
- Develop legacy marketing activity, working alongside our existing legacy administrator and Freewill partnership
- Manage and inspire a team of three: Communications and Fundraising Manager, Retail Manager and Supporter Care Officer, and Fundraising Support Officer
- Oversee the donor database (Donorfy), ensuring data quality and insight-driven decision making
- Explore opportunities to grow income from European and international donors
- Contribute to the global income picture, including through improved donor stewardship and deeper supporter engagement
- Support the growth of SWT's profile and visibility in the UK through press opportunities, social media, and other channels.
About You
We are looking for a fundraiser who loves the craft – someone who is energised by building relationships, writing a compelling proposal, developing a giving programme from scratch, and ensuring every supporter feels genuinely valued. This is a hands-on role as much as a leadership one, and the right person will be comfortable doing both.
- Proven track record in fundraising, with demonstrable success securing income from individuals, trusts or corporates – including five-figure gifts and above
- Experience developing individual giving programmes, including mid-level or major donor cultivation
- A hands-on practitioner – comfortable writing proposals, reports and donor communications yourself
- Experience managing a small fundraising team with warmth, clarity and accountability
- Strong relationship management and stewardship skills
- Experience working with a donor CRM and using data to inform fundraising decisions
- Comfortable in a building role – excited by developing programmes that don't yet exist
- Experience managing fundraising budgets and producing income forecasts and performance reports.

- Support and develop wider Individual Giving activity, including donations, lower-level appeals and top-up or repeat giving
- Use ideas, data and insight to grow unrestricted income and improve recruitment, retention, supporter journeys and giving opportunities
- Draft clear, engaging supporter communications, acknowledgement letters and fundraising messages that build affinity, loyalty and giving
c) Stewardship, events and supporter experience
- Support and lead cultivation, stewardship and fundraising events for Patrons, Friends and wider donors, drawing on the Museum’s public programme and tailored opportunities
- Help ensure every supporter interaction is well prepared, reflects the Museum’s values and leaves donors feeling valued, informed and connected to the Museum’s work
d) CRM (Beacon), administration and reporting
- Ensure Beacon supports effective fundraising by maintaining accurate, reliable and useful data
- Oversee the effective processing of donations, memberships, renewals and acknowledgements, ensuring a consistently high-quality supporter experience
- Use reports, lists and updates on income, renewals, activity and supporter engagement to strengthen planning, tracking and decision-making.
e) Wider Development contribution
- Contribute to wider fundraising activity where this supports team priorities, including trusts and foundations, events, corporate partnerships and other Development priorities as needed, offering useful personal development opportunities
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across Finance, Programming, Communications and other teams to support joined-up fundraising and supporter engagement
- Carry out other reasonable duties appropriate to the role and the needs of a small museum team
PERSON SPECIFICATION
a) Experience and knowledge
Essential
- Experience of working in fundraising, membership, development or a closely related supporter-facing role
- Experience of managing Patrons, Friends, membership or similar supporter programmes, including recruitment, renewals, stewardship and income growth
- Experience of supporter stewardship, renewals, donor communications and relationship management
- Experience of using a database or CRM system to manage supporter records, donations, memberships, renewals and acknowledgements accurately
- Experience of supporting or delivering events, mailings or supporter communications
- Experience of working collaboratively across teams and contributing beyond a core programme area where this supports shared priorities.
Desirable
- Experience of working in a museum, gallery, arts, heritage or charitable organisation
- Experience of helping to increase unrestricted income through Friends, Patrons, annual giving, general donations, lower-level appeals or membership schemes
- Experience of other income streams and a willingness to learn, develop and grow
- Experience of writing supporter-focused fundraising copy, appeals or stewardship communications
- Knowledge of Gift Aid, data protection and good fundraising practice

- A genuine interest in the cultural and heritage sector generally, the Museum’s story, mission and values, and in the role fundraising plays in advancing them
- A clear interest in developing and widening your fundraising skills, with enthusiasm for working in a small museum where you can help shape change and make a visible difference
