The Company
For more than 700 years, the Mercers’ Company has been a philanthropic force for good. Our giving focuses on Young People and Education, Heritage and Arts, Older People and Housing, and Church and Communities. Through this work, we aim to improve lives and support lasting societal change.
The Company is sole corporate trustee of six charities and sole member of a seventh. Together, they award significant grants, provide social housing and steward substantial charitable assets and investments.
The Role
We are seeking an Interim Charities Accountant to join our high-performing Finance team for a nine-month assignment. Reporting to the Head of Finance (Charities), you will deliver financial and management accounting across seven charities and act as a trusted business partner to the Housing and Philanthropy teams, providing insight that supports sound decisions, effective stewardship and the efficient use of resources.
This broad, hands-on role spans the 2027 budget cycle, management reporting, forecasting and financial modelling, statutory accounts preparation and liaison with auditors. You will manage cash flow, reserves, capital projects and intercompany accounting, and deliver clear financial reporting to committees.
You will oversee work delegated to the Finance Officer, support and challenge budget holders, maintain robust controls and compliance, and work with colleagues and external advisers to improve policies, procedures, systems and services, using automation and AI where appropriate to improve efficiency.
The Ideal Candidate
You will be recently qualified or part-qualified ACA, ACCA or CIMA, or bring an equivalent finance qualification or strong practical experience. You will have a proven track record in charity management accounting, including fund accounting, budgeting, forecasting, month-end and year-end processes, balance-sheet reconciliations, financial reporting, charity governance and regulation.
Analytical and forward-thinking, you will translate complex financial data into clear, timely advice and reports, build effective relationships and influence constructively. You will be able to manage competing priorities accurately and use Excel and finance systems confidently. Experience of MRI Qube, statutory charity accounts, external audit and committee presentations would be advantageous.
Benefits
In return, you will receive a competitive salary and excellent benefits package, including a non-contributory pension, private medical insurance, 30 days’ annual leave with the option to purchase more, a travel season-ticket loan, subsidised gym membership, three volunteering days a year, and strong learning and development support.
The role is based in our City of London office, with the option to work remotely one day a week where business needs allow. We are open to discussing other flexible working arrangements.
To Apply
To apply, send your CV and a covering letter explaining how your experience meets the role requirements by 10 am on Monday 26 October. We may interview before the closing date, so early applications are encouraged.
