Housing Rights Support Volunteer Merseyside

Information about the role

You’ll be supporting our Housing Rights Workers to help people who are currently experiencing the housing emergency. This is a varied role, with tasks including gathering information from clients, keeping clients updated on their cases, completing research, data entry and other admin tasks. 

Location: Holy Trinity Church, Richmond Park, Liverpool, Merseyside

Suggested contribution: One day per week (can be flexible around your commitments).

Availability: Volunteering will take place at a time that suits you, within Monday-Friday, 9am – 5pm

Main activities may include:

• Speaking with new clients about their circumstances to identify how we can help.

• Communicating with existing clients to gather information, provide updates and support them with practical tasks like form filling. 

• Inputting client data onto our database.

• Researching options for housing and welfare funds and helping to complete applications on behalf of clients.

• Gathering and analysing data to identify local housing issues and trends. Compiling this information into a simple report.

• Completing administrative tasks such as photocopying and scanning.

This role fights the housing emergency by supporting people who are struggling with housing and bringing them one step closer to a safe home.

Your skills and experience

We’d love the volunteer in this role to have good communication skills and be confident with using IT. But the most important thing is that you have enthusiasm for fighting the housing emergency.

Supporting you

• You will be provided with an induction into your role, access to relevant learning and a copy of our volunteer handbook.

• The role, including learning and communications, are flexible, so can be tailored so they best suit your needs and preferences. 

• You will be able to claim reasonable volunteering expenses in line with Shelter’s volunteer expenses policy. Where financial circumstances would be a barrier to volunteering, we may be able to offer these funds in advance. 

• You will be able to access our volunteer support package, including our colleague assistance programme and Shelter’s network of mental health first aiders.

About the role:

As a Shop Volunteer you’ll be joining a friendly, welcoming team of volunteers and staff who support each other and have a lot of fun along the way. We value every volunteer and the unique perspective, skills and energy you bring. 

Whether you’re sorting donations, creating beautiful displays, or chatting to customers, every task you take on helps to build a more inclusive world. 

We value volunteer development, and as part of this role your can develop your skills further by training to become a till user alongside your regular shop volunteer responsibilities, or progressing into a Key volunteer, a role which includes opening, running, and closing the shop in the absence of the manager.

No matter your reason for volunteering – whether it’s to meet new people, build new skills or support Sense’s cause – there’s a place for you in one of our shops. 

Due to the nature of the role, we require all applicants to be aged 16 or over. You must have a UK address to volunteer with Sense.

Key responsibilities: Shop volunteer 

You’ll spend time doing a range of activities, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service, helping create a wonderful shopping experience.
• Receiving donated items from the public, thanking them for their support.
• Sorting, steaming and preparing donations for sale.
• Helping to display stock in eye-catching and exciting ways.
• Keeping the shop floor clean, safe and tidy.
• Talking to customers about Sense and the work we do.

Key responsibilities: Till volunteer

Being a till volunteer includes all the same responsibilities as a shop volunteer, however, when you’re ready, we’ll provide you with additional training to:

• Serve customers on the till in a warm and friendly way.
• Put sales through the till, packing them and thanking the customer for shopping with us.
• Talk to customers about Gift Aid and other fundraising initiatives.

Key responsibilities: Key volunteer 

Being a Key volunteer includes all the same responsibilities as a shop and till volunteer. However, if you’re interested in taking on additional responsibilities, you can train to become a Key Volunteer, helping the shop manager by:

• Helping supervise the shop and other volunteers.
• Supporting the shop manager to make sure customers have a great experience.
• Opening and closing the shop when needed.
• Cashing up at the end of the day.

Customer Service / Reception Volunteer

We’re looking for a friendly volunteer to be the first point of contact for clients visiting our Guildford office on Wednesdays and to start as soon as possible

What will you do?

Provide a customer facing reception service to clients who drop in to see us in our Guildford office, including:

• Ensuring relevant forms are completed
• Assigning clients to Advisers for more detailed support
• Booking appointments
• Monitoring the flow of clients in the drop-in
• Assist clients with form filling
• Complete day sheets
• Scan and upload documents to case recording system
• Write up notes on case recording system
• When the the drop-in service is at full capacity, ensuring that you understand the client’s issue and support them by providing information, signposting them to another, more appropriate organisation or another CASWS drop-in

Provide administrative support, including:

• Monitoring emails
• Answering client enquiries by email and phone
• Sending out appointment information

We ask all our volunteers to commit to volunteering one day a week for at least a year.

How much time do you need to give?

We are looking for someone to cover reception duties on Wednesdays in our Millmead, Guildford office between 9am and 4pm.

What will you do?

This is a key frontline role helping people who are seeking information and advice. Our aim is to provide an effective and efficient advice service to members of the public and our assessors are at the heart of this work.

As a Gateway Assessor, you’ll work as part of a team directly with residents who need advice both face to face in community venues and on the phone.  You’ll suggest the appropriate next steps after finding out more about the client’s problem and situation.  This might be providing information, making an appointment with an Adviser, or making a referral to another organisation. 

How much time do you need to give?

The initial training takes around 1 month if you attend twice a week.  We prefer people who can commit to 2 days a week for at least 6 months after completing the initial training.

What do you need to have?

No formal qualifications are required – just the right attitude and dedication.  We’re looking for volunteers who:

• are friendly, caring and empathetic
• are non-judgemental and able to remain impartial
• have strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and are a good listener – you’ll need to be able to assess client’s problems using sensitive listening and questioning
• have a good level of literacy and numeracy skills, including attention to detail
• are comfortable using computers for training, communications and writing up notes
• can work as part of a diverse team
• can handle challenging situations and use their initiative to solve problems
• will commit to the training programme and continuous professional development

We are keen to encourage volunteers who speak a community language e.g. Arabic, Bengali, Farsi or European languages.

You’ll also need to complete an Enhanced level DBS disclosure (criminal record check), which we will arrange. Having a criminal record does not necessarily prevent you from volunteering with us.

What we offer you

• Our Volunteer Coordinator will support you throughout your volunteering journey at CAW and ensure that you get any training that you might need
• You’ll join a positive, supportive and friendly team of volunteers and paid staff
• All our volunteers are an integral part of our team. You’ll be invited to attend regular training sessions, join social events and support group activities
• Your line manager will provide regular individual meetings and support
• You’ll have access to the national Citizens Advice e-learning, networks and resources.
• Reimbursement of agreed out of pocket expenses.

Progression

There may be opportunities to progress into Adviser roles. Advisers explore and discuss clients’ issues and options in more dept and suggest the next steps.

If you are interested in joining the advice team, then you need to be prepared for a longer commitment and training.
