A Day in the Life of a Mental Health Support Worker
Mental health support workers play a crucial role in the lives of individuals experiencing mental health challenges. Their days are filled with diverse tasks, all aimed at supporting and empowering the residents of our services to live fulfilling lives. Every day is different in our services, and most of the shifts are either Earlies (8am to 4pm) or Late (2pm to 10pm).
The day begins at 8am with a handover meeting to discuss any urgent matters that arose overnight and to plan for the day ahead. Support workers organise the day, prioritise tasks and coordinate with team members to ensure seamless customer support.
One of the first tasks is to support customers with their medication and treatment needs. This may involve administering the medication or observing customers taking it by themselves, it is also the perfect opportunity to catch-up with everyone.
After this, it is approaching 10am and it's time for individual appointments. These meetings are a cornerstone of the mental health support worker's role. During these sessions, support workers review clients' progress, discuss assigned tasks, and assess any new observations. Each session is tailored to the client's specific needs and goals: new residents may want practical advice on how to eat healthily, how to stay on top of their rent or they may simply wish to discuss their anxieties. Others who have been in our services longer may want to develop strategies on looking for work, developing coping mechanisms or rekindling relationships with their families. No matter how long they have been in our services, mental health support workers always actively listen to their customer's concerns, validate their emotions, advocate for them and provide reassurance.
After each appointment, support workers carefully document their observations and interactions with the customer on their electronic record. They note any changes in customers' mood, behaviour, or well-being. They also record the progress they have made towards their goals and identify any areas where they may need additional support. These detailed notes are essential for providing continuity of care and tracking customers' progress over time.
At 2pm, the afternoon brings a team handover meeting to start the Late Shift, where all customers are reviewed and discussed, and support workers ensure that everyone is well-informed and prepared. The team also determines who can connect with those who need support immediately and divide any new team tasks up.
Some days may involve accompanying clients to activities, shopping, or appointments in the community. Alternatively, support workers may attend trainings or workshops to enhance their skills and knowledge. Look Ahead offers a wide range of trainings, from Diabetes to Personality Disorder, 1st Aid or Safeguarding.
While the entirety of the day is not spent with customers, mental health support workers continuously assess and manage potential risks associated with their customers, as well as support their betterment. This comes in the form of working together with them, reviewing their information and working with co-workers to ensure individuals are given the maximum amount of support to make strong steps forward.
