Background
Thyroid UK is a charitable company working primarily within the United Kingdom. Formed in 1998, we became a company limited by guarantee in 2007 and in 2008 we became a registered charity.
The provision of quality information for people with both diagnosed and undiagnosed thyroid disorders is the primary concern of Thyroid UK, and we work effectively in this field through dialogue with NHS departments, networking with other voluntary organisations, and providing services directly to patients.
We are a small charity, with just three permanent employees, plus contract staff, but we have a wide influence, and provide a great deal of support to our beneficiaries, within the UK and abroad. The charity’s annual income in 2023 was £96,900.54 with the majority of that income being spent on both running the charity and conducting campaigns and activities to support our beneficiaries.
The Thyroid UK Board of Trustees is a diverse group of 7 individuals, including the CEO, a Chairperson, Deputy Chair and this Treasurer role.
Role
We are looking to fill the position of treasurer for our Board of Trustees. Working with the CEO and Finance Manager, this role monitors the financial administration of the charity and reports to the Board of Trustees on its state of financial health, in line with best practice and in compliance with the governing document and legal requirements, to provide the board with the confidence and knowledge to better make operational and strategic decisions.
The ideal candidate will have experience of finance or finance management, preferably including some experience in a small company or charity.
Time requirement
The role will require a time commitment of an average of 1 to 2 days per month, with more time required in some months than others. This includes three planned board meetings of approximately 3 hours (two held online and one held in London with the option to join remotely, if needed) and the Thyroid UK AGM.
The Treasurer should be available to support the CEO, Chair and fellow trustees between board meetings, including taking responsibility to deal with issues which may arise, and have one-to-one meetings with the CEO and Finance Manager before board meetings.
Term of office
The Treasurer’s term is two years, following which the trustees may re-elect the position for a further one or two term(s).
Remuneration
Thyroid UK is a charitable, not-for-profit organisation. Trustee roles are not remunerated. However, reasonable expenses for travel can be paid for those not living in London.
Key Responsibilities
· Liaise with CEO and Trustees to ensure the financial viability of the organisation’s strategy, advising on the financial implications of Thyroid UK’s strategic plan
· Present Thyroid UK’s financial position and broader context at Trustee meetings, and oversee the production of an annual budget.
· Ensure that the Board of Trustees is aware of its financial duties and responsibilities and the need to comply with all legislation, and take a lead in interpreting financial data to fellow board members.
· Provide oversight and guidance where necessary of accounts prepared for funders and relevant statutory bodies.
· Oversee the appointment of an independent examiner of the accounts and review the appointment on a regular basis.
· Act as counter signatory on charity cheques and some applications to funders, approve payments on banking systems, and spending approval in accordance with financial management processes.
· Work in partnership with the CEO/Finance Manager in executing their responsibilities and achieving their financial goals.
· Ensure that all financial policies, procedures and the appointment of external financial advisors are reviewed on a regular basis.
Person Specification
In addition to fulfilling the experiences, skills and attributes of a trustee, a treasurer must also have:
1. Knowledge and experience of accounting and audit practices in the UK as they apply to companies and charities
2. Be able to interrogate and interpret financial statements
3. Communicate financial information in a meaningful and understandable way to the Board
4. Strong working knowledge of any accounting software

Cats Protection is the UK’s leading feline welfare charity and our vision is a world where every cat is treated with kindness and an understanding of its needs. Cats are at the centre of everything we do and our objectives are: homing, neutering and educating people about cats and their care. We help thousands of cats across the UK each year thanks to our network of dedicated volunteers, staff and supporters.
A bit about this role
Across the UK, many cats are cared for by volunteer fosterers who provide a stable, safe and loving environment in their homes or in purpose-built pens in their gardens. They provide vital hands-on care and accommodation to stray or abandoned cats or cats whose owners could sadly no longer keep them, and are part of a dedicated team of volunteers committed to finding new homes for cats in need. Our fosterers carry out this role with support from their local branch or centre.
Most of our fosterers care for one or two cats at a time and enjoy providing lots of TLC to those cats, who have been pre-loved or have had a difficult start in life. Some of our fosterers look after new mums and kittens and provide round-the-clock care to newborns to give them the best start in life.
What can you expect to be doing?
- Meeting the needs of the cats and kittens in your care
- Cleaning and looking after the cats’ environment and equipment
- Feeding, grooming and administering medication
- Spending time enriching the cats’ experience in care including; play, exercise and stroking
- Maintaining high standards of animal welfare
A bit more information about this role and the team
Please note: Haverhill Branch are seeking Indoor Fosterers only at this time. Please enquire for further information.
What are the benefits to you and the cats?
You will develop new skills, expand your knowledge and make a significant contribution to improving the lives of cats and kittens in need by caring for them before they find new, loving homes. You will also meet new people, make new friends and be part of a dedicated team of volunteers.
We’re looking for someone with
- A dedicated suitable spare room in your house or space in your garden for a purpose-built pen – you can read more about this here
- Basic knowledge of cats, cat care and understanding their needs
- An appreciation of cat welfare and hygiene standards
- Good interpersonal skills
- Patience, commitment and empathy
- Willingness to be part of a team
Time expectation
Our volunteer fosterers usually spend one and a half hours per day on average (around 10 to 13 hours per week) in this role, but this might vary depending on the number of cats or kittens in care. In order to help you feel confident in your fosterer role we ask that prior to looking after your first foster cat you complete some online cat welfare learning modules.
Support, guidance and keeping you safe
At Cats Protection we believe our volunteers should be happy and confident in their roles. We provide support and guidance from our National Cat Centre and through our regional and local volunteer groups and teams. We offer engaging online and face-to-face training, expenses and have policies and processes to help volunteers get the most out of their time with us.
The wellbeing of our people is important and at Cats Protection we are committed to safeguarding children, adults at risk and all those that we come into contact with as part of our activities.

Evolve Counselling is a long-established charitable social enterprise, providing low cost, affordable or funded mental health counselling to adults in Cambridgeshire and surrounding counties. Our professional counselling community is made up of 50 – 60 qualified self-employed practitioners, working part-time to deliver talking therapies both online and in person.
We deliver around 500 counselling sessions per month to a broad range of individuals, many of whom would not otherwise be able to access therapeutic support. Evolve also provides supervision, reflective practice, critical incident support, and mental health awareness and related training to organisations and businesses large and small.
We are searching for an experienced treasurer/finance specialist who can support our board, committees, and the CEO as we move through our next strategic stage of consolidation, then growth. Although long-established and successful, Evolve is reshaping itself and your financial expertise will be instrumental in positioning our charity to successfully meet the ever-growing demands and opportunities for supporting good mental health in our communities. Please note, a background in counselling is NOT a prerequisite for this role.
Including quarterly board meetings, committee sessions (at present virtual), a face-to-face AGM event, away days, and regular meetings with our CEO and the trustees, we anticipate a flexible time commitment of around 2 - 5 days per month.
For further information or an informal discussion of interest, please contact Kevin Bottrell, Chair of Trustees.
Application process: Expressions of interest in the first instance by email to Kevin Bottrell, Chair of Trustees.
Our Chair will review and assess expressions of interest and will then call for applications in the form of a CV and letter setting out the applicant’s motivations, which will be assessed by a panel of trustees under conditions that maximise our commitment to EDI principles. Applicants may be asked to interview, and appointment will be made at a meeting of the board of trustees and ratified by the membership at AGM.

We enable individuals to donate to causes they care about and provide them full transparency on what impact their donation makes. Many people genuinely wish to do good and contribute to improving our world. Donating to charities is a common way to pursue this. The challenge is that the charity industry is a jungle. It can be complicated to see how your donation is actually spent and hard to identify the charities who have the largest impact.
We want to change that by:
- Providing full transparency on what your donation is spent on when you donate through us.
- Making it easy for you to support NGOs with proven impact.
- Creating communities centered around the causes you care about, offering exclusive content to further engage and inform you.
MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS
- Involves content creation and management, strategy implementation, engagement, analytics and reporting, and collaboration.
- Volunteer 2-3 hours per week for 3-5 months.

Village Solar creates jobs for rural marginalized women in off-grid, last-mile communities of Malawi through the distribution of clean energy products to low-income consumers. This means we recruit, train and offer ongoing business support to disadvantaged women, while also providing life-improving products to households in remote rural areas. In the rural areas of Malawi, a vast majority of households, schools, businesses and healthcare facilities do not have access to reliable electricity, and most operate without electricity at all. As a result, more than 17 Million people are losing their chance at a better standard of living, and are losing economic opportunities that could lift them out of poverty. Furthermore, poverty has a clear gender aspect. Compared to men, rural women face challenges in accessing decent work opportunities and struggle to translate their labor into secure and higher-paying employment.
We target underserved communities not being reached by the majority of current energy access programs. In these communities we recruit and train local women that belong to local Village Savings Associations (VSLAs) and bring them into our micro-entrepreneur distribution network. We provide them with in-demand products, primarily solar lamps and home systems, and compensate them on a commission basis. These women not only raise awareness of clean energy solutions but also serve as essential points of sale and provide post-sales support within their communities. We offer consumer financing that makes it easier for low income customers to afford our products.
WRITER
- Write compelling feature stories, explainers, and news articles related to clean energy entrepreneurship, women empowerment, and sustainable development.
- Volunteer 4-6 hours per week for 3-5 months
