Chair of Trustees - The Family Place Foundation

We are recruiting a new Chair of Trustees to lead our Board and support the next stage of our charity’s development.

Location: Remote, with occasional in‑person trustee meetings (typically once or twice a year) held in the Clyro/Herefordshire area.

Time commitment: Approximately 1–2 days per month. This includes six trustee meetings a year, occasional ad‑hoc discussions and light‑touch support between meetings (for example reviewing policies or responding to emails).

About us

Established in 2020, we are a small, well-established charity with a strong grounding and a clear purpose. We raise funds to provide support to adopted, fostered and kinship care children and their families to improve emotional wellbeing, strengthen relationships, and reduce the impact of early trauma. In collaboration with leading UK practitioners, we support the delivery of a range of services providing essential therapeutic care and family support that isn’t covered by statutory funding. Services offered include Family Activity Days, Specialist Clinical Workshops, Advisory Consultations and Family Respite Camps. We also work to raise awareness of the challenges faced by children who cannot live with their birth families. We are a warm, committed team with a strong reputation for high‑quality support, clear governance, and genuine care for the families we serve.

We are now seeking a Chair of Trustees to help guide the charity through its next stage of development, including shaping our emerging Family Foundations project, a significant new early‑years initiative for the charity, alongside our ongoing portfolio of funded projects delivered through our specialist partner. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dedicated Board and a small operational support team who care deeply about the families we serve and the long‑term sustainability of the organisation.

The charity is currently led by a Board of four trustees, supported by two part‑time operational staff and a small group of volunteers.

As Chair, you will provide leadership to the Board, ensure effective governance, and help the charity continue enabling the delivery of high‑quality, trauma‑informed support. You will work closely with the trustees and operational colleagues to help shape strategy, strengthen partnerships, and ensure the charity remains compliant, resilient, and focused on its mission. You will also play a key role in strengthening the charity’s governance and fundraising, which in turn enables the therapeutic delivery carried out by our specialist partner. 

A supportive handover will be provided to ensure a smooth and confident transition into the role.

Person Specification

We are looking for someone who brings:

• The ability to work collaboratively with trustees and our small operational support team, offering encouragement and constructive challenge while supporting the charity’s governance and fundraising role, which enables the specialist delivery work carried out by our partner.

• Strategic thinking, with the ability to help shape the charity’s direction and ensure long‑term sustainability.

• Reliability, integrity and a calm, steady approach, keeping the charity’s purpose at the centre of decision‑making.

• Meets the eligibility requirements to serve as a charity trustee, as set out by the Charity Commission.

Helpful but not essential:

• Experience of chairing a board or committee

• Experience in charity governance, education, social care, therapeutic work, or community leadership would be helpful, but we are open to a wide range of backgrounds.

• Lived or professional experience related to adoption, fostering, trauma or family support.

Join FARA, a charity with over 30 years of experience and 39 charity shops across London. Our Richmond shop is looking for a dedicated Clothes Repair Volunteer to support our team in preparing donated clothing for sale through basic repairs, alterations, and garment care.

By volunteering with us, you’ll play an important role in extending the life of donated clothing, reducing textile waste, and supporting our commitment to reuse and a sustainable circular economy.

The Role:

As a volunteer, your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

• Repairing donated clothing, including sewing buttons, fixing hems, and mending minor tears

We’re recruiting volunteer HR managers and people managers to take part in a research pilot focused on early burnout detection, psychological safety, and evidence-based manager action. This is a practical pilot designed to help managers spot strain earlier, respond sooner, and understand what changes inside a team before absence or attrition appears.

Rather than functioning as a wellbeing app, this pilot measures team-level risk through short anonymous check-ins using validated psychometric tools, including burnout, psychological safety, and work-based needs satisfaction measures. Managers receive aggregated insights and suggested actions, helping them respond at the point where they can make the biggest difference.

We’re looking for:

• An engaged HR or people manager.

• A team lead or line manager willing to receive insights and act on recommendations.

• A committed team of around 10–12 people who can take part for the full pilot.

What’s involved:

• A short scoping conversation to agree goals, timing, and success measures.

• Pilot set-up and baseline measurement.

• Weekly anonymous check-ins for around 12 weeks.

• A review at the end of the pilot with a written summary of findings and next steps.

We are looking for three volunteers to join our team of receptionists and cover our reception once a week for 3.5 hours. 

Our office is just a 10-minute walk from London Bridge, staff are friendly and welcoming, and volunteers tend to stay with us for long periods. Shifts are on Mondays 12:30 - 4:00pm, Tuesdays 9:00 am - 12:30 pm and on Wednesdays 9:00 am to 12:30 pm. Preferably, you will be free to commit to a weekly shift for a least six months, or longer if possible. 

In this role, you will:

• use Outlook to check staff availability and whereabouts 
• screen and transfer phone calls to staff or take message to pass on by email 
• give visitors a warm welcome and ensure they sign in and out 
• respond to requests to send information out, mainly application packs and letters
• assist with outgoing mail, franking and posting 
• help with occasional admin tasks as they arise 

You will need to speak English fluently, to be a good listener and confident screening phone calls; our clients are Scottish and some have strong accents.  Reliability, commitment and good time keeping are a must.

You must be 18 or over and live in the London area. Our office has no step free access. 

Volunteer Animal Fosterer (RSPCA North West London and South Hertfordshire Branch)

As an animal fosterer, you would be supporting our Branch in providing either our cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, or other small furries with the safety of your home whilst tending to their welfare needs such as feeding and grooming. In addition to this, by providing a temporary loving environment, you will play a crucial role in their wellbeing and socialisation, which will significantly improve their chances of successful rehoming.

We will guide you through the fostering process and ensure that you have all the necessary equipment, food, and veterinary care for your foster. We are also happy to reimburse any other pre-agreed expenses that you may incur through volunteering for us.

Whilst our animals are in your foster care, you will:

• Provide them with care, suitable housing, and a safe environment as per our policies and guidelines.
• Feed, water, and groom them in line with our advice.
• Transport them to any veterinary appointments if required.
• Provide them with your time and patience.
• Help us spread the word about the animals in your care so they might find their forever home quicker.
• Playing and cuddles are also a must! 

What we are looking for in a volunteer Fosterer

• Volunteers aged 18 or over who have had plenty of experience caring for animals.
• Fostering experience is beneficial but not essential as training is provided.
• For their wellbeing, the whole family should be on board with fostering an animal.
• Any existing pets or animals need to have been spayed/neutered (some medical reasons may mean they cannot be so, please let us know if this is the case).
• You will need to live in our branches area (see attached map)
• You will need to be able to pick up supplies from our office in Eastcote and transport animals to the vets for routine and emergency appointments.

It is worth mentioning that our animals do have different needs as whilst some are ready for rehoming others may require rehabilitation or ongoing medication. Therefore, we also aim to understand your situation and circumstances to ensure that we match you with your perfect foster animal.

Our voluntary roles are subject to an informal interview and trial period. We will ask you to provide contact details for two referees, and, depending on the position, you may need to sign an agreement and complete specific training before starting the role.
