We have an exciting opportunity for you to join our Northern Projects reserve team on a dedicated learning and development programme to survey and monitor species such as great crested newts and white clawed crayfish.
This opportunity is for 6 months at 2 days per week
What will you be doing?
On this Voluntary Placement you will gain experience from survey and monitoring projects across the county. You will be based in YWT’s York office with field work predominantly carried out across North and West Yorkshire. You will spend time with our project officers in undertaking activities on third party land, however there will also be the opportunity to shadow other members of the team to enhance your development. You could gain experience in the following areas:
- Species survey and monitoring as part of national and local schemes including environmental DNA (eDNA) and traditional methods
- Riparian ecology, restoration and monitoring
- Land management techniques to improve water quality
- Wetland habitat creation
- Undertaking practical tasks such as habitat creation and restoration
- Gain an understanding of budgets and project management tools
- Mapping, administrative and GIS work using QGIS and Survey123
- Helping to publicising project work via traditional communications, social media and engagement events
- Helping to set up survey work and events with volunteers and landowners
- Involvement in partnership projects and engaging with farmers, landowners and other stakeholders

Looe Island Nature Reserve, Looe, Cornwall

Cornwall Wildlife Trust is working to create a Cornwall where nature thrives on land and at sea. For over 60 years, we’ve been inspiring people to connect with and protect the natural world — and Looe Island is one of our most unique and cherished nature reserves.
The Role:
Looe Island is a flagship Destination Nature Reserve, carefully managed by residential wardens who permanently live on the island throughout the season. During the summer months, visitors can explore the island on organised boat trips or stay overnight in our eco-friendly Smuggler’s Cottage or island bell tent.
In 2026, we’re expanding our offer to include new, exclusive tours and immersive experiences — making this an especially exciting time to be involved.
We are seeking volunteer wardens for a joint application from:
- A couple
- Friends or family members
- Or an individual willing to share accommodation
Wardens will live in our simply renovated Island House, with separate bedrooms, and play a key role in caring for the island, supporting visitors, and helping protect its wildlife.

As a volunteer videographer at our wetland centre, you will play a vital role in helping us to inspire our visitors to connect with wetlands and wildlife. In this role you will be visiting WWT Martin Mere weekly or every two weeks to capture wildlife spectacles, species, visitors’ experiences and our volunteers for inclusion in promotional material online and for short-form video content across social media.
What will you be doing?
- Capturing videos of the centre, its wildlife, wetland landscapes, events and people (depending on skill level).
- Receiving direction from the centre Marketing Officer and HQ content team as well as taking videos whenever you find an opportunity.
- Working proactively with staff and volunteers at your local centre to capture key events and wildlife sightings that would make engaging content for website, marketing materials, social media etc.

Face Painter Volunteer
About The Role
As a face painter you will be out and about in the grounds, engaging with visitors to create memories and helping them and you to have a great day out!
We believe that the best way for people to understand and connect to wetlands is to experience them, so we awe-inspiring nature up close at Martin Mere Wetland Centre, visitors can explore unique wetland habitats and the amazing array of birds and mammals that inhabit them. By providing an excellent visitor experience as a member of the Living History team, you will be bringing wetlands throughout history, and the history of the mere to life by delivering key messages about how important wetlands are for food, materials, medicine and livelihoods. This encourages our visitors to make the most of their visit to Martin Mere, and to understand and support our work to save wetlands for wildlife and people.
This role involves:
- Undertaking talks and hands-on activities in our Mere Tun Village about how useful wetlands are. Specifically about villagers settling next to wetlands 1000 years ago to provide them with food, materials for shelter, medicine and items to trade.
- Undertaking talks in our Mere Tun Village about the history of the mere and development of Martin Mere
- Assisting with activities when Mere Tun Village is open as a working village to our visitors in school holidays and weekends.
- Communicating WWT conservation messages and membership during talks about how people in places such as Madagascar still make settlements next to wetlands for their livelihoods.

Be part of an amazing project to improve connectivity of green habitats around London. Trees are amazing – they capture and store carbon, prevent flooding, reduce heat in summer, reduce pollution, support wildlife and are beautiful too.
The London Tree Ring project aims to involve volunteers in practical tree and hedgerow planting, woodland restocking or related tasks in various locations across London.

The role will include:
- Being welcoming in the discovery hide and bird Observatory helping point out to the visitors what wildlife they can see
- Surveying the marsh harriers and avocets during the breeding season
- Walking around the other hides birding and talking to visitors.
- Updating the sightings board and letting the information desk team know about any exciting sightings.
- Keeping the hides clean by litter picking and sweeping

The purpose of the role is to design and facilitate gardening activities at our community allotment with refugees and people seeking asylum, alongside our other gardening volunteers.
The role includes:
- planning and facilitating seasonal gardening activities with small groups
- supporting participants to bring their own ideas, work independently or lead their own activities where appropriate, providing support and guidance as needed
- fostering a positive culture of support and community
- raising any safeguarding or support concerns with our People Support Team
- setting up/packing down around sessions, generally contributing to the smooth running of sessions
- maintaining tools
- contributing to overall running of the charity (attending monthly online meetings, taking on organisational tasks)
- maintaining participant confidentiality
- attending training sessions as needed
At the garden we run gardening, art and craft activities. Through these sessions we maintain our beautiful community garden, grow and harvest vegetable/fruit crops and create wildlife and social areas. We always try to make sure there are a range of activities to choose from to fit with a range of energy/ability levels. All new ideas for activities to do at the garden are welcome!
Our sessions are on Tuesday mornings and afternoons and Friday mornings
Gardening expertise is not necessary for this role, although it is always very welcome.
As this is an on site role we will consider applicant who are based in Greater Manchester,UK.
