Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees

Join London Mining Network as a Co-Chair of our Board of Trustees, and help lead us through a crucial moment for climate, nature and a just transition away from destructive extractivism,hold mining companies to account and stand with communities resisting harmful mining practices worldwide.

London Mining Network (LMN) is seeking a committed, justice-driven individual with experience in NGO or charity governance to co-chair our Board of Trustees. If you believe in environmental justice, human rights, and corporate accountability, and want to help lead a small but influential charity working in solidarity with communities affected by mining and extractivism across the world, we would love to hear from you.

The Co-Chairs serve voluntarily and are responsible for monitoring strategic development, the financial health and effectiveness of the organisation, chairing meetings and AGMs, ensuring decisions are implemented and acting as a channel of communication between the Board of Trustees and LMN staff.

London Mining Network is a coalition of human rights, environmental, and solidarity groups. We work with mining-affected communities around the world to challenge harmful mining practices, expose corporate misconduct, and push for stronger regulation of mining companies listed on London.

We are a small organisation with a big impact. Our Co-Chairs play a vital role in guiding our strategy, ensuring good governance, and supporting our staff team.

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who wants to make a difference and help shape LMN’s next chapter. Join as a trustee and act as one of the Co-Chairs. You will work alongside an experienced and supportive board, including an existing Co-Chair and a legally qualified trustee who can provide additional support, particularly on governance matters. It is a genuine opportunity to bring your experience, ideas and leadership to LMN and help shape its future, alongside people who care deeply about the network, its community and the work it does.

What we're looking for

We're looking for a Co-Chair with a passion for social and environmental justice, solid trustee experience (ideally including experience chairing a board), strong people and governance skills, and the time to commit properly to the role.

We welcome applications from people who share our values, have the ability to contribute to collective decision-making, a commitment to equality and diversity, and want to contribute their skills, experience, and insight.

We're particularly interested in people with experience in any of the following:

• Charity governance and leadership

• Experience managing change 

• External representation or partnership-building (e.g. with funders, coalitions, or other organisations)

• Experience in fundraising and managing boards

What the role involves

As Co-Chair, you will:

• Lead the LMN Board of Trustees, keeping it focused on the charity's purpose and long-term strategic direction.

• Support and challenge the organisation to ensure it remains effective, ethical, and financially sound.

• Chair board meetings and AGMs, facilitating discussion and helping the board reach decisions.

• Lead on the development of the board and ensure its decisions are implemented, and that the charity is exercising its governance.

• Take urgent decisions, where authorised, between board meetings when it isn’t possible or practical to hold a trustee meeting.

• Promote good governance, ensuring trustees understand their legal duties and that LMN complies with its governing document and charity law.

• Oversee senior staff, acting as a key and communication link between the board and the staff team.

• Contribute to sub-groups or LMN working areas depending on your skills and expertise.

• Represent LMN externally as an ambassador for our mission and values, acting as a figurehead for the charity (for example, representing it at functions, meetings, public events or in the press).

• Help develop the board's effectiveness, including recruiting, supporting and evaluating trustees.

• Approve financial expenditure where appropriate and request approval from the Board of Trustees.

• Endorse joint events where a decision is needed within a short timeframe. 

This is a voluntary role, with reasonable expenses reimbursed, if agreed beforehand.

Time commitment

• Minimum one-year commitment, ideally longer given the leadership nature of the role.

• Around six to eight board meetings a year (usually online and/or hybrid). Additional hours a month (around 5+ hrs) for meetings with senior staff, reviewing papers, and preparing for board meetings.

• Occasional involvement in working groups or specific projects, attending public events as capacity allows.

You will be supported by the other Co-Chair, as well as the other trustees and staff members, who will work with you to provide a tailored, supportive induction.
