Job description

Operating Room Lead

  • Volunteer Role

  • Min commitment required: 6 months

  • Mercy Ships – based in West Africa

  • Accommodation & Food provided

Mercy Ships is a faith-based charitable organisation that deploys hospital ships to some of the poorest countries in sub-Saharan Africa, providing vital, free healthcare to people who have little or no access to safe surgical care.

However, our work goes beyond providing surgery. Alongside our clinical services, Mercy Ships is committed to training local healthcare professionals and building long-term medical capacity within the countries we serve. By sharing knowledge, skills and expertise, we aim to leave a lasting legacy and strengthen healthcare systems for the future.

The role of Operating Room Educator brings these two important areas of our work together. You will be responsible for the orientation of all Operating Room staff, including participants in our Education, Training and Advocacy (ETA) programmes, helping them to understand the Operating Room department, its practices and their role within the team.

Alongside your clinical responsibilities, you will also provide education and training to partner-country healthcare professionals, trainees and students participating in Mercy Ships' training programmes.

This is a unique opportunity to combine your clinical expertise with your passion for education, supporting colleagues from the countries we serve while helping to build sustainable surgical capacity long after our hospital ship has departed.

Essential qualifications & experience

  • Current active license as a Registered Nurse RN (or its International Equivalent) required.

  • Minimum of 5 years of Operating Room Nurse

  • Operating Room teaching/educator experience
