Job description

Our 46 year old veteran has always been keen on computer games and Audio books, and his great companion is his Staffordshire bull terrier. Because of his health problems related to Diabetes and Multiple Sclerosis, our member is now housebound.

He would like 2 patient and understanding volunteers: one an under 50 female befriender for chats once a week, who’s into films and IT. The other one, a male volunteer to push his wheelchair outside for shorts walks – this would enable him to walk with his beloved dog.

This blind veteran joined the Royal Corps of Signals TA Unit at Southfields and after returning to civilian life, he worked as a first aid trainer for 10 years. After that, he worked as a salesman for Hewlett Packard, hence his love of IT.

If you think you can make the difference in his life, we look forward to hearing from you.

By providing regular companionship, social interaction and building a positive one-to-one relationship you can help to reduce the effects of isolation so commonly experienced by our veterans. Your positivity, friendliness and communication can make the world of difference to their day lives.

Volunteers need to be over the age of 18 years and able to travel independently to and from our veterans home. Reliability, punctuality and trustworthiness are essential requirements for this role as are good listening and interpersonal skills. As understanding of the importance of confidentiality and relationship boundaries is key to this role. We will give you the necessary training, induction and support to be confident and enjoy your volunteering.
