Job description

About the role

At The Brilliant Club, we mobilise the PhD community to support students from less advantaged backgrounds to access the most competitive universities and succeed when they get there. We work with students who, because of their family income, parental history or the postcode they live in, are at risk of missing out on the life-changing opportunities linked to higher education.

The Research and Evaluation officer sits within the Research and Impact team and reports to the Evaluation and Impact Manager. Collectively, the team has three key responsibilities: evaluating and reporting the impact of the charity’s programmes, quality assuring the programmes, and providing research and evaluation consultancy to education organisations. The Research and Evaluation officer is responsible for supporting evaluating and reporting the impact of the charity’s university access programmes, university success programmes, and communities work. The role also involves supporting the tracking and reporting of organisational targets that relate to the strategy. In this role, you will work closely with the Programmes teams as well as support consultancy colleagues.

The successful candidate will have experience supporting data analysis, evaluation and reporting activities, with strong numerical skills and an interest in working with data to generate meaningful insights. They will be keen to develop their expertise in data visualisation and reporting tools, including Power BI, and will be supported to build their skills in creating dashboards, visualisations and performance reports that inform decision making across the organisation. They will be able to communicate data and evaluation findings clearly to a range of audiences, helping to translate complex information into accessible insights for colleagues and partners. Working collaboratively across teams, they will contribute to the production of high-quality reports, data products and impact evidence that support the charity's university access and success programmes. They will demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning, take a proactive approach to developing new analytical skills, and champion the charity's values in all interactions with colleagues and external stakeholders.

While this role can be based at any of our offices throughout the UK, some travel will be required (mainly to London) to attend in-person meetings.

About you

The role will best suit someone who:

  • A degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Data Science, Economics, Education, Public Policy, Psychology, Statistics or a related field), or equivalent experience, with strong analytical and research skills.

  • An understanding of evaluation and research methods, and experience supporting the collection, management and analysis of data to assess programme delivery, outcomes and impact.

  • Strong Excel skills, including data cleaning, manipulation and analysis, and an interest in developing proficiency in statistical software packages (e.g. SPSS, Stata or R).

  • Experience using, or a willingness to learn, Power BI (or similar business intelligence tools) to create dashboards, visualisations and reports that support performance monitoring, evaluation and organisational learning.

  • Good quantitative analysis skills, with the ability to interpret data, identify trends and contribute to evidence-based insights and recommendations.

  • Experience supporting data analysis, evaluation or research projects, with the ability to work effectively across multiple tasks and priorities.

  • Experience working collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders to support the effective use of data and evidence to inform practice and continuous improvement.

  • Ability to produce clear, accurate reports, presentations and other outputs, and communicate data and findings to a range of audiences in an accessible way.

  • Strong organisational skills, with attention to detail and the ability to manage deadlines while maintaining high-quality work.

  • A commitment to developing technical and analytical skills, including learning new tools and approaches to data analysis, visualisation and reporting.

  • Will adhere to information security policies included in the charity's ISO 27001 manual and complete information security training.

  • Has a demonstrable passion for furthering The Brilliant Club's mission.
