The Society

The Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) is the learned society and professional body for geography and geographers. It is also a charity and a membership organisation. The Society was founded in 1830 and has been one of the most active of the learned societies ever since. It was pivotal in establishing geography as a teaching and research discipline in British universities and continues to play a key role in geographical and environmental education.

The Society is a leading world centre for geographical learning – supporting education, teaching, research, professional practice and scientific expeditions, as well as promoting public understanding and enjoyment of geography and providing advice to policymakers.

The Society offers professional accreditation to members through Chartered Geographer status. The Society is based in a listed building in its own grounds in Kensington opposite Hyde Park, and operates nine regional branches in the UK and two overseas.

The Position

We are seeking a proactive, collaborative professional with marketing and sales experience to take on the role of Membership Development Manager.

This is a new role to drive the growth, engagement, and retention of our Fellows and Members by working across the organisation to deliver membership acquisition, development, and engagement.

You will work across our organisation to develop member-focused initiatives and contribute to the Society’s strategic goals of expanding and diversifying its membership base.

Duties and responsibilities

• Membership acquisition - Design and deliver, in partnership with colleagues, membership strategies that grow acquisition, deepen engagement, and improve retention.
• Membership development - Design and develop product diversification, pathways for member progression, including transitions between membership types and professional recognition.
• Collaborate across departments to ensure membership and partnership initiatives support wider organisational goals.

The successful candidate will have commercial, marketing and sales experience as well as experience in membership development – products, services, customer engagement, or professional development.

Salary and Benefits

This is a permanent, full-time post subject to successful completion of a probationary period of three months. The salary range for this post is £45,000 to £47,375 per annum depending on experience and qualifications. The post is based in Kensington, London.

This is an exciting brand-new position within our growing Public Fundraising team supporting on our Individual Giving, Community Fundraising and Sports & Challenges programme. NB. We do not expect you to have experience in all three areas (Individual Giving, Community Fundraising and Sports & Challenges).

This role will contribute to the delivery of our Public Fundraising activity, helping to maximise income and create a great supporter experience for both new and existing supporters.

You’ll project manage fundraising activities and supporter journeys from start to finish, delivering them on time and in line with annual plans and budget. You will analyse and evaluate activity so that we can inform future plans and support the annual planning of the team’s activity.

You’ll have strong relationship-building skills and the ability to communicate effectively with our supporters across a range of channels, including mail, e-mail, telephone and face-to-face. You will also be able to work collaboratively with the Communications, Corporate, and Digital Engagement teams on a variety of projects.

Crisis is the national charity for people experiencing homelessness. We have embarked on our 10-year strategy for ending homelessness. We know it is not inevitable. We know together we can end it.

Job title: internally this role is known as Structured Coach (Landlord Liaison)

Crisis Skylight Oxford is located in the Old Fire Station in the centre of the city. Our team provide a one to one specialist housing led service to help people find and secure affordable housing. We offer person centred support and will help people with anything that will support them to end their homelessness, such as mental health and well-being, finances or finding employment. 

The Old Fire Station building also accommodates a range of flexible arts spaces which are run by an independent arts company.  

About the role

In this role you will carry your own caseload and be supporting people who are at risk of homelessness or experiencing homelessness into the Private Rental Sector.

You will be part of a supportive and established team who have knowledge and experience of accessing the PRS sector With a specialism in landlord liaison you will be finding, securing and maintaining the relationships we need with private and social landlords to provide a supply of good quality and affordable homes for Crisis members.

The key to success will be your ability, as part of the Crisis team, to make collaborative, consistent and persistent relationships with each person you support and have good partnership working skills.

About you

To be successful in this role you will have:

1. Experience of working within a relevant sector (e.g. homelessness, mental health, drug and alcohol treatment) and have good knowledge of relevant housing, homelessness and welfare legislation

1. Excellent understanding of the rental housing market local to Skylight Oxford and experience of sourcing and procuring properties including demonstratable knowledge of the legal requirements when letting a property
2. Understanding of both the needs of social and private landlords and the barriers and opportunities faced by people moving out of homelessness and into housing.​​​​​​​
3. Effective negotiation skills with the ability to mediate between parties who may have different priorities and to broker agreements
