Charity Trustees Volunteer Roles

The Generation Trust, based at Guy’s Hospital in London, seeks new charity trustees to support its mission of advancing scientific research and translating discoveries into clinical practice.

The Generation Trust was created in 1982 with the aim of raising funds to invest in genetic research, with a particular focus on the work of expert scientists in the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at Guy’s Hospital, London. Initially the charity raised about £2m and it currently has reserves of £700k. The charity has provided early support for a number of projects leading to better understanding of a number of disabling and life changing conditions.

The science of genetics continues to make exciting and rapid advances in the knowledge of human disease, helping to inform diagnostic practice and to develop new treatments.

The Department at Guy’s has played a key role in helping to move scientific knowledge ‘from bench to bedside’ in the NHS, advancing new methods of preventing or treating a range of life-changing and disabling conditions in both children and adults.

Modern DNA sequencing techniques at Guy’s have advanced understanding of the molecular origins and characteristics of breast cancer, leukaemia, inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis and Huntingdon’s Disease as well as some of the rarer genetic diseases in children.

Funds raised by The Generation Trust have been used to invest in the early careers of the Department’s brightest young scientists, in PhD students or post-doctoral fellows, in pilot studies to ‘prime the pump’ for successful major grant applications and occasionally in capital projects to enhance the facilities of this world class research centre.

At the end of 2023, the Trust had reserves of about £700,000. The founders of The Generation Trust now hope to find the next generation of charity trustees to succeed them. We aim to recruit a small group who between them will have an interest in or, at least, a curiosity about the development of health science, cell biology, bio-informatics, DNA sequencing and genome analysis.

To sustain and grow the Trust we would like to add some expertise in investment management, charity governance and, ideally, access to wider networks of potential financial support in the City of London and elsewhere.​​

Our Board members are unpaid volunteers called trustees. They fill an essential role in ensuring our charity improves the lives of older and vulnerable people around the borough of Lambeth. We currently have seven Board members with space for up to five more. South West Advocacy Network (SWAN) want to strengthen their Board of Trustees with up to 4 new Trustee appointments, including a Treasurer. These are voluntary positions and provide opportunity to help SWAN to develop its strategic direction and sustain innovative services to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities, primarily, but not solely, in counties across the South of England.

SWAN began life in Wiltshire and over the past 25 years has expanded into Somerset, Bristol, Dorset, Isle of Wight, West Berkshire and Portsmouth. We deliver high quality, independent advocacy services supporting a diverse range of vulnerable people. We have developed a model of advocacy which ensures everyone, including the most marginalised, have the same rights and opportunities as their fellow citizens. We are looking for dynamic and empathetic people to become trustees within our organisation, people who have the passion and drive to support SWAN and help us to ensure that the voices around our Board table reflect and understand the communities we work in. About us

Lipodystrophy UK is a dedicated charity, set up to support people affected by Lipodystrophy. Lipodystrophy is a rare disease which affects the body’s ability to store fat under the skin. This can lead to metabolic complications including insulin resistance, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, heart disease, kidney disease, fatty liver disease and many others. 

We are a small but growing charity and need help with our Trustee board, after some dedicated long-serving members have stepped down. 

We’re looking for a socially-conscious individual to help support our goals. This will be a fantastic opportunity to gain experience as a Board member and Trustee, facilitating the growth of the charity in its continuous efforts to support patients and their families. We welcome anyone affected by Lipodystrophy, rare disease, or anyone who wants to help our vibrant community.

Your role

You’ll be required to: 

• Attend quarterly Board meetings (virtually)
• Offer opinions and recommendations on charity projects and directions
• Support our actions through organisation of/support organisation of different projects, for example: 
  • Arranging the printing of information leaflets 
  • Being a point of contact to a collaborator/collaborating organisation 
  • Organising a patient support day, etc. 
• Liaise with and advise fellow trustees and other volunteers regarding assigned projects/tasks, keeping the Board up-to-date with any related developments
• Maintain a flexible approach in line with community engagement 
• Give regular updates (quarterly Board meetings and ad hoc, when required) to the other Trustees on the Board 
• Ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, organisation law, and any other relevant legislation or regulations 
• Ensure that the organisation pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document
• Undertake, along with fellow trustees, actively to govern, direct and control the organisation through collective decision-making

We would also like to appoint a Trustee with relevant experience as a Treasurer. Additional responsibilities would include:

• Oversee the financial affairs of the organisation and ensure they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice
• Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures and controls are in place 
• Monitor and report on the financial health of the organisation
• Liaise with and advise fellow trustees and other volunteers on all financial matters to ensure the financial viability of the organisation
• Make fellow trustees aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting financial data to them
• Produce or assist with the production of all necessary financial reports and returns, accounts and audits
• Regularly report the financial position at trustee meetings
• Appraise the financial viability of plans, funding applications, proposals and feasibility studies and advise the trustees accordingly
• Ensure that funds are properly expended in accordance with any restrictions placed by the donor

About you

You’ll be comfortable communicating with others, discussing the merits and disadvantages for different approaches. You will be comfortable suggesting ideas to support patients and willing to take on responsibility for different projects, as required (expect no more than a few hours commitment a month). It would be great if you had an understanding and/or a personal connection to Lipodystrophy and/or rare disease, or a willingness to learn about Lipodystrophy and its challenges. You must be sensitive to the difficulties experienced by the lipodystrophy community. To be considered for a Trustee role you will have:

Additionally for the Treasurer position:

The Organisation:
We are an environmental education charity, best known for providing residential and day field trips for those studying biology and geography. But our mission is to create outstanding opportunities for everyone to learn about nature. 

We have welcomed over 3.7 million visitors since we opened our first centre in 1946. In 2023 123,000 or so learners visited our centres: most were aged 25 and below and were in school or university groups. We (the Charity and its trading subsidiary) employ 325 or so people and in an accounting context have annual turnover in the range £15m to £20m.

The Survivors Trust is keen to find someone with a finance background to join our active and highly motivated Trustee Board.We really welcome the insight and drive that survivors can bring to our work and are keen to promote diversity on the Board.

The Survivors Trust is a national membership organisation for specialist voluntary sector rape and sexual abuse support services in the UK and Ireland.  We have 120+ member agencies who are all independent charities providing a range of counselling, support and advocacy services for women, men, children and young people, partners and family members who have been affected by sexual violence of any kind at any time in their lives.

The impact of sexual violence of any form, whether experienced as an adult or as a child, can be devastating and can last a lifetime. Survivors may experience a wide range of physical and mental health problems as a result of being sexually violated, affecting every aspect of their health, lives, relationships, education and work.  We aim to raise awareness of the support survivors need and the work of our Member Agencies in providing this crucial help.

TST is in the unique position of having member agencies that are working with all victims and survivors of sexual violence and sexual abuse.  We are well aware of the issues facing organisations that are delivering trauma informed services and can support them and policy makers and commissioners to understand how services need to be developed and provided.  TST is an independent inspection body for our UKAS accredited service standards for specialist sexual violence organisations.

We provide an accredited Diploma for Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (ISVAs) and CPD accredited workshops.  We have also established a quality mark for educational establishments and corporate organisations, our Trauma Informed Educator and Trauma Informed Employer Quality Marks (TIE).

We are looking for a new Trustee who is willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board. The Care Workers' Charity supports social care workers across the UK by providing mental health and wellbeing support, financial support in the form of crisis grants, and signposting applicants to other organisations and resources.

We are particularly looking for trustees who:

• have charity experience, or
• have marketing experience, or

Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that The Care Workers’ Charity achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity and ensure that The Care Workers’ Charity has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Where they have specific expertise such as fundraising, they work with the CWC team, providing coaching or connections in order for us to raise funds to enable us to support as many care workers as we can. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the executive team to enable us to grow and thrive.

As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may involve leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, presenting externally, representing the Charity, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise. Our trustees have a key role in risk management, working with the staff team to identify and manage risks.

Our Board meetings are mostly remote with one held face-to-face each year in London and occasionally we ask trustees to represent the Charity at events or award ceremonies, or at stakeholder events which are held close to the trustee's location.

Duties:

• Support and provide advice on The Care Workers’ Charity’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
• Approve operational strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
• Oversee The Care Workers’ Charity’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress.
• Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.

• Review and approve The Care Workers’ Charity’s financial statements.

• Attend Board meetings (mostly remote and possibly one being face-to-face), adequately prepared to contribute to discussions and respond promptly to requests for required action.

Community Action Malvern & District is a registered charity that has been serving the Malvern area since 1972 and we aim to combat social isolation by connecting people through transport and other community projects delivered by volunteers. We currently have 10 staff, over 100 volunteers,  a Men’s Shed, a volunteer recruitment project, and a small fleet of accessible minibuses and wheelchair vehicles.

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE

The Baca Charity is currently looking for Trustees with expertise in at least one of the following areas: 

• Property /social housing expertise including an understanding of housing law, regulations and property market/trends.

LEVEL OF COMMITMENT 

All trustees are required to attend quarterly evening and one full day Board meetings.  Board meetings usually take place at the Baca main office, Loughborough, Leicestershire. As appropriate, meetings could also take place virtually.

In addition to reading papers and preparing for meetings/conference calls, Trustees may be called upon for specific advice if they have particular expertise in a given area. 

According to their individual skills and experience, Trustees may also be invited to serve on Baca’s Finance or Staff & Young People Wellbeing Committees or on ad-hoc Working Groups. Committees meet quarterly, usually in advance of Board meetings.

• The Board of Trustees work with the Chief Executive at a strategic level to ensure the organisation is effective within its aims and objectives.
• The Board, made up of 6 Trustees, meet with the Chief Executive and Deputy Chief Executive, approximately every two months, to discuss the wider obligations and challenges of the specific sector in which we work
• The Board have a joint responsibility with the Chief Executive to ensure the charity complies with good practice and legal obligations.

We are seeking to appoint a new Trustee to provide strategic oversight and leadership for the organisation, particularly in the area of IT, Digital, and Technology.

The purpose of your role is to work alongside the other trustees to ensure that the Association is working towards its charitable purposes, is complying with all applicable rules and laws, and is making best use of its resources to achieve its aims. We are specifically looking for someone to provide us with the expertise to oversee our exciting digital transformation, product development and overall cybersecurity. 

Being a charity trustee with the Association is a rewarding experience and gives a unique opportunity to support and shape a national mental health charity at the highest level. Now is an exciting time to join us as we have recently begun the transition from a volunteer-led organisation to a staff-led model, which is opening up new opportunities. 

Trustees have legal responsibility for the Association’s management and administration. They are ultimately responsible for the Association’s work and are accountable to both the Association’s legal members and its regulators such as the Charity Commission for the good governance of the Association.

Trustees take considered and informed decisions in the best interests of the Association. Trustees are not expected to be experts on all areas of their work but are expected to seek guidance and support where necessary and to bring their own knowledge and experience to contribute to discussions.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications

• Eligible to be a Company Director & Charity Trustee

Experience

• Professional experience in an IT/Digital/Technology Field, such as (but not limited to):
  • Software development
  • Cybersecurity
  • Technical programme/product management. 
  • Engineering management. 
  • Managing/overseeing technology-related projects, including financial components.

Competencies

• Excellent communicator, verbal and written – approachable, clear and professional
• Strategic and creative approach – not being afraid to change the way we do things to improve outcomes
• A strong team-player – a contributor of opinion and thoughts, whilst having the ability to collaborate and be accepting of others views
• Logical approach to decision making – ensuring difficult decisions are taken calmly on the best available information, and with the beneficiaries of the charity in mind

Knowledge

• Familiar with public Cloud technologies. 
• Familiar with modern software development principles (SDLC, DevOps)

• Previous experience with a telephone helpline or mental health charity (or similar)
• Managing and engaging volunteers and/or young people
• Previous experience as a company director and/or charity trustee

Knowledge

• Understanding of the Nightline movement and/or the wider student mental health sector
