We are seeking to recruit a highly skilled Key Worker for our Key Worker Service in East Berkshire. The role will be diverse and service user centred and would suit someone with significant experience in supporting young people and young adults with Autism and Learning Disabilities and their families.

The day to day work will involve a flexible approach to coordination and direct support for the young person and their family, as well as providing responsive communication at times of increased need. This is an exciting role which allows for the Key Worker to support families to navigate the system whilst advocating for them and ensuring that their voice is heard.

As the service is new there will be opportunities for collaboration and co-production and our vision is to provide young person and family centered support, whilst influencing system change to achieve better outcomes for more children,  young people and adults under the age of 25.

The service will be provided across the entire East Berkshire footprint covering: Slough, Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Bracknell Forest.Although the team will be “virtual”, there will be frequent travel within and across the East Berkshire area, therefore being a car driver with access to a car is essential.

The Key Working Function has been developed as a response to the NHS England & NHS Improvement Long Term Plan (LTP) commitment that by 2023/24, children and young people with a learning disability, autism, or both, with the most complex needs will have a designated Key Worker, applying the recommendations made by Dame Christine Lenehan in ‘These are our Children'.

Once excluded, prospects for these young people are bleak, with only 4% achieving good GCSE grades, and 67% entering sustained education, employment or training compared to 96% of their non-excluded peers. Our mission - To ensure that young people who have been excluded from school are not excluded from society.

Young people who are eligible for free school meals are 4x more likely to get excluded, along with black Caribbean boys. We use rugby as a hook and mentorship as an anchor, using our four cornerstones (developing life skills, raising aspirations, improving physical wellbeing, focus on mental wellbeing) to develop young people throughout their time with us. We enable young people to be in a better position to enter sustained education, employment or training (EET) when they leave school. 

The delivery team always work in pairs, running our interventions across a variety of settings (including mainstream schools, Pupil Referral Units, Alternative Provisions, SEN schools, Youth Offenders Institutes, community centres and rugby clubs) working in the school timetable and between 3-7pm. While delivering our interventions is a big part of the job, you will also be responsible for supporting the team to ensure the successful collection of data, managing school relationships and delivering on partnership projects.

You do not need to be a rugby fanatic for this role, but you do need to be passionate about social mobility of the excluded. We are looking for someone with a youth work, teaching, mentoring or sports coaching background to help strengthen our team as we work towards our forward strategy.

Contract

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Planning and Organisational Leadership

• Lead the development and implementation of Girls Not Brides’ people and culture strategies to deliver on the vision, mission and goals set out in the Secretariat and Partnership strategies, 2022-2025.
• Lead the creation of an inclusive organisational culture, values, plans, and HR policies that are rooted in and informed by a deep commitment to the values of Girls Not Brides and to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

• Lead the development and implementation of Girls Not Brides’ people management and acquisition strategies to deliver on the vision.

What will I be doing?

The role of Community Youth Worker is, by nature, highly relational and is a position of great influence that enables you to nurture, inspire, connect and empower young people from all walks of life, so they can make the most of their lives. As such, it is a role which is demanding and carries great responsibility, but provides exciting opportunities to impact the lives of young people.

This is a varied role which carries with it a variety of different aspects and you are expected to manage your own workload and diary and priorities in liaison with your line manager and with the available time. Your role is primarily delivery but does also include some coordination relating to projects and volunteers. Community Youth Work takes many forms and while the actual work is subject to change according to the current needs of young people or Matrix, it may include:

Youth Café

The Youth Hideaway is our flagship project and is a fun open access youth café run by our team after school at our social enterprise café - The Hideaway.

As a Community Youth Worker some of your time will be spent assisting the Youth Café, Project Lead and Head of Youth Work in delivering this project and it may include:

• Helping to create a safe, fun and inspiring environment for the young people that attend
• Plan, prepare and deliver quality youth sessions
• Build healthy relationships with young people that attend the sessions, identifying and responding to the needs that may arise

Monthly Youth Hubs

Youth Hubs are fun open access youth clubs run by our youth workers in the community. These are run on a monthly basis on rotation in different areas within Guildford Borough. GASP Motor Project

Matrix will often work in collaboration with partner organisations and following a successful run of pilot sessions we are pleased to confirm that from September 2022 we will be extending our work with GASP Motor Project.

Working in this setting is very similar to the mentoring work that we offer in schools and you may be expected to:

Schools Work

Our work in schools is varied and you may be expected to:

• Develop and run a variety of contact points and projects for young people across the school, including group sessions and drop-ins and after school projects

General

• Contribute to, and be involved in fundraising and other activities that benefit Matrix, including whole staff workshop days, fundraising activities.

Level of Authority

As a Community Youth Worker, you will need to operate with a high degree of autonomy. You will be expected to administer your own time and workload in liaison with your line manager, keeping an ‘open’ diary for all activities. Your primary role will be to keep our service and young people, safe. You will help to contribute to a great working environment, with a calm, yet assertive manner, being able to handle potentially difficult situations. In addition, you will complete health and safety checks, ensuring the service is clean and tidy and reporting any repairs. You will be lone working as part of the role, so you will need to be comfortable with decision making and following procedures.

You will work a shift 21:30-08:30, on a four night on, four night off rota. Although these are long shifts, you will get four days off after, which can provide a great work life balance.

This role is based in Rochdale Police station along with some hybrid working, you must be prepared to deliver and facilitate recognised support and behaviour change programmes to perpetrators of domestic abuse (DA) and those at risk of becoming perpetrators.
