The AdAmi Project is on the hunt for a dedicated volunteer Safeguarding Trustee to join our friendly Board! You’ll help ensure young mothers in Sierra Leone are protected and supported as they rebuild their lives. We’re looking for someone with safeguarding knowledge, a collaborative spirit, and a strong commitment to accountability and care. Your guidance will help keep our work safe, ethical, and grounded in dignity.
WHO WE ARE
The AdAmi Project works together with young mothers in Bo district, southern Sierra Leone, to build happy, healthy and independent lives. We facilitate opportunities, foster hope, reunify families, build community and amplify the voices of young mothers so that they can be the drivers of their own lives.
ROLE OVERVIEW
As the Safeguarding representative on the Board of Trustees, your primary responsibility is to ensure that safeguarding is embedded in all aspects of the AdAmi Project’s work. You will provide support, oversight, and guidance to help protect the young mothers we serve.
Summary of additional responsibilities:
1. Leadership & Oversight

Serve as the Trustee’s lead for safeguarding and provide an update at quarterly Board of Trustee meetings.

Provide oversight on safeguarding practices with our local partners and respond to any concerns appropriately.
2. Policy & Practice

Support the implementation and regular review of safeguarding policies and practices for AdAmi UK and our local partners.

Ensure policies comply with UK Charity Commission guidance and are appropriately contextualised to Sierra Leone.
3. Training & Awareness
-
Ensure all staff, volunteers and Trustees at AdAmi UK and our local partners receive appropriate safeguarding training on a regular basis.

Promote a safeguarding culture and continuously share best practices.
4. Monitoring & Reporting

Regularly review safeguarding reports and incident logs.

Advise on managing safeguarding concerns or disclosures.

Support risk assessments related to safeguarding.
Required commitment:
-
Attend quarterly Board of Trustee meetings held virtually for up to two hours.

Liaise with local partners to review quarterly safeguarding reports and provide feedback on safeguarding best practices, as well as ensure teams receive refresher training at least once annually.

Ad hoc preparation and/or review of key safeguarding documents and policies.

Represent the Board of Trustees at AdAmi Project fundraising and awareness raising events, as and when is required (a few times a year, maximum).

Unreliable and Exploitative Markets Farmers often sell produce to informal vendors at exploitative prices due to the absence of structured, transparent, and reliable markets. This erodes potential profits, discourages production, and limits economic empowerment.

Many farmers lack access to training on climate-smart agriculture or awareness of sustainable land and water use practices.

At Yafika Agri Venture, we provide a holistic, scalable, and community-rooted model that increases the productivity and resilience of last-mile smallholder farmers in Malawi. Our solution directly tackles the key challenges farmers face by integrating four core components:

Access to Quality Inputs on Credit We source certified seeds, fertilizers, and other essential inputs from approved suppliers and deliver them directly to farmers on an asset-based loan model. This eliminates high upfront costs and long travel distances, enabling timely access to resources needed for improved yields.

Farmer Training & Extension Services Through hands-on training and field demonstrations, we equip farmers with practical knowledge in climate-smart agriculture, including microdosing, mixed cropping, composting, and post-harvest handling. Our field team works collaboratively with government extension officers and community facilitators to strengthen local capacity.

Village Banking & Financial Literacy We organize farmers into village savings groups, providing financial literacy and helping them build a savings culture. This enhances their ability to repay input loans, invest in future production cycles, and manage household finances sustainably.

Yemaya Surf
We create space and opportunity for Dominicans, especially Black & Indigenous women and girls, to reclaim their right to the ocean through surfing, cultural reconnection, and climate justice.
The north coast of the Dominican Republic is home to world-renowned waves and surf beaches. It is also home to a long and painful history of colonialism, exclusion, and ecological disruption. In 1492, Christopher Columbus landed in what is now Puerto Plata—where Cabarete, the island’s surf capital, is located. More than 500 years later, that legacy continues to shape who has access to the ocean, whose knowledge is valued, and who benefits from its economic, cultural, and healing power.
In Cabarete today, surfing is dominated by foreigners and men. Despite living near the sea, Black Dominican women and girls are largely excluded from ocean sports, environmental decision-making, and leadership opportunities. Of the 30+ surf instructors at Playa Encuentro, only three are women—and just one is a local Dominican. While the Dominican government has branded Cabarete as the country’s “Capital of Surf,” local communities face barriers at every level: surfboards and lessons are priced for tourists, beachfront access is restricted by private developments, and the sport’s culture often feels unwelcoming or unsafe for women and people of color.
This disparity is not coincidental—it is systemic. Tourism and coastal development in the Dominican Republic have prioritized profit over people, often displacing low-income communities from their ancestral shorelines. Surf beach entrances are illegally closed to favor tourists. One surf lesson can cost up to $65 USD, with board rentals priced at $20 per hour—far beyond what most Dominicans can afford. Gender norms, racism, and cultural stigma further prevent Afro-Dominican and Indigenous women and girls from feeling safe, confident, or supported in ocean spaces. At the same time, climate change is wreaking havoc across the country. Hurricanes and heavy rains regularly displace entire coastal neighborhoods, while government inaction and deforestation by foreign-owned corporations exacerbate the crisis. The burden of climate adaptation falls on local communities, especially low-income women, who are often excluded from climate conversations, planning, and resources.
Yemaya Surf exists to shift this reality.
Yemaya Surf integrates sports, cultural healing, and climate action to produce long-term, structural change in who has access to coastal spaces and who shapes environmental solutions. We prioritize community-led environmental care, Afro-Indigenous spiritual practices, and environmental stewardship.
Yemaya Surf's Theory of Change
We believe that when Black Dominican women and girls reclaim the ocean through surfing and ancestral wisdom, they heal, empower themselves, and challenge systemic exclusion. In rural Uganda, limited access to quality education, economic opportunities for women, and creative expression prevents communities from reaching their full potential. Many families live below the poverty line, and young people often drop out of school due to financial hardship. Women, especially single mothers, lack stable income and professional skills. Our eco-friendly initiatives include tree-planting projects to combat deforestation and sustainable menstrual hygiene programs to reduce plastic waste and ensure menstrual equity. Through civic education and advocacy, we empower youth, women, and persons with disabilities to demand climate justice and influence policies that promote equitable resource allocation. Additionally, we establish community-led technical working groups and provide training on climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy, and sustainable livelihoods to enhance long-term resilience. By combining direct interventions, policy advocacy, and grassroots mobilization, we ensure that vulnerable communities are not only protected from climate change but also actively shape solutions for a sustainable future.
Fundraising Officer
Volunteer Role Description (remote, unpaid)
Role Description: Identify and research potential donors, partners, and funding opportunities.
- Develop and submit compelling grant proposals and fundraising applications.

Our goal is to recover the health of our ocean so it can help with healing our climate; to make seas protected in law to be protected in practice; and to stop the tide of plastic that’s getting into our waters. By joining as a Trustee, you will help navigate us through the risks and opportunities that we meet.

What we’re looking for

Governance/Legal – expected to be a legal professional with experience in charity, company or regulatory law.

Marine Conservation – knowledge of the marine environment, with policy and/or practical experience of conservation. A network of contacts across the marine sector, particularly with business or government, would be an advantage.
What you can bring to our Board can be just as interesting as where you’ve been working. Ideally, you will have the relevant skills and experience set out in the profile but you should not feel prevented from applying if you do not have experience across all criteria. You do not need to have previous charity trustee experience, but you will need to be comfortable participating at a senior level with complex discussions and the need to be comfortable making pragmatic but key decisions.
