Director of Partnerships & Philanthropy

Mencap is entering an exciting new chapter in its fundraising development and is seeking an ambitious and strategic leader to join the organisation as Director of Partnerships & Philanthropy. With strong support from the Chief Executive, Executive Team and Board, Mencap is investing in its fundraising capability and building the foundations for long-term growth across partnerships, philanthropy and trusts.
This role will shape the future of high value fundraising at Mencap. At a pivotal point in their strategy, you will lead an ambitious portfolio across Corporate Partnerships, Philanthropy, Trusts, Foundations and Statutory funding, helping grow major and multi-year income, strengthen senior relationships and build sustainable support for their work.

You will build on these valued relationships while developing a compelling case for support that inspires new partners, philanthropists and funders to engage with Mencap's mission. We are looking for a confident senior fundraising leader who combines strategic ambition with strong financial judgement, effective relationship management and a clear understanding of compliant, disciplined pipeline development. You will be credible with senior stakeholders, able to influence well and passionate about building inclusive, high-performing teams focused on meaningful impact.
You will directly lead key roles across the function, including the High Value Relationship Lead and Corporate Development Lead, creating the leadership, confidence, systems and ways of working needed for high value fundraising to grow. This role is for someone who can set direction, build trusted relationships and help the function scale income and deliver lasting impact.
This is a highly visible leadership position requiring someone who is comfortable operating both strategically and externally. The successful candidate will be expected to build relationships personally, develop external networks, identify new opportunities and act as a visible ambassador for Mencap and its mission.

Philanthropy Lead
Hours: Full-Time, 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday (0.8 FTE may be considered)
Contract: Permanent
Salary: £50,000 - £60,000 depending on experience, with the possibility of further flexibility for an exceptional candidate (pro rata for a 0.8 FTE position).

The Role
This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the most successful college philanthropic programmes. Clare College is celebrating its 700th anniversary this year. Accompanied by a new strategic vision for the College’s eighth century, the anniversary provides an opportunity to launch Clare’s next fundraising campaign.
The Philanthropy Lead will be in a key position to attract significant support for our 700th anniversary campaign, working alongside the Master, other senior College Officers, the Deputy Development Director and other members of the College. The post will appeal to a talented major gifts fundraiser who is motivated by the opportunity to have a tangible impact on the College’s future success at a crucial point in its history. Building on a platform of strong fundraising performance and alumni engagement, the role-holder will play a pivotal role in attracting philanthropic funding from alumni, well-wishers, trusts and foundations in the UK and worldwide. Success in this role will be transformational, not only for the College but also for the role-holder’s own career.

Salary and Benefits
Remuneration will be between £50,000 and £60,000 depending on experience, with the possibility of further flexibility for an exceptional candidate. There will be a four-month probationary period. Confirmation in role will be subject to satisfactory completion of the probationary period, which will include demonstrable progress towards achieving the full-year fundraising target for the role. The salary increases annually with the cost of living and will be subject to periodic review, benchmarked against equivalent roles in other Cambridge colleges.
The nature of the role requires the role-holder to be out of College, visiting prospective and current donors, at least 2–3 days per week. Attendance in College on these days is not required. Because Clare is a community, attendance in College at least one day a week will be essential. The usual hours of work are between 8.45am and 5pm, Monday to Friday (36.25 hours a week), but flexibility and some evening and weekend work are required. A willingness to travel abroad for donor and prospect meetings is highly desirable. TOIL may be given at the discretion of the line manager.

About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to join the team on a 12-month maternity cover contract. In this busy and varied role, you’ll assist in the delivery of legacy marketing campaigns across a range of channels, including digital, telemarketing, legacy events and direct mail, and help to promote gifts in wills to internal audiences too. You’ll be allocated your own campaigns to project manage and you’ll monitor income, expenditure and KPI’s for all activity.
You’ll provide support for the administration of gifts in wills, including managing both legacy enquiries and legacy notifications, ensuring these are handled efficiently and to agreed timescales. This is a great role within a growing legacy program that will build your legacy and direct marketing skills and give you plenty of opportunity for development.
With combined individual giving income growing strongly and expected to reach £31 million in 2026-27, this is the perfect time to join an experienced and effective individual giving team.
About you
You’ll have some experience of working in a similar environment such as fundraising, marketing, sales or customer services, or have experience of managing your own projects.
You enjoy the variety of working on campaigns across a range of channels seeing the results of your work. As a well-organised person with great communication skills, you’ll be at ease liaising with external suppliers and in-house stakeholders across the charity to support the delivery of legacy marketing campaigns. Your close attention to detail will ensure accuracy with campaign reports, record keeping and invoice processing. And you’ll be able to use your excellent writing skills to craft copy that inspires both internal and external audiences about gifts in wills.

About the role
Reporting to the Chief Development Officer and working with colleagues worldwide, the Head of Major Gifts will lead the organisation’s major gifts programme, taking responsibility for both strategic development and frontline fundraising. The Head of Major Gifts will build pipeline, create new opportunities, strengthen fundraising discipline and embed a proactive new-business culture across the major gifts function.
