The Biochemical Society promotes the future of molecular biosciences, facilitating the sharing of expertise, supporting the advancement of biochemistry and molecular biology, and raising the awareness of their importance in addressing societal grand challenges.

We are seeking a Governance and EDI Officer, on an 12-month Fixed Term Contract, to support the Governance and EDI team. Please note that governance meetings are usually held between Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, so applicants should be available to attend meetings on these days as required.

The Governance and EDI Officer will work closely with Trustees, the Senior Leadership Team, and other key stakeholders (both internal and external) to help deliver the calendar of governance committee, board and panel meetings ensuring adherence to pre-defined service standards and ensuring that all discussions, decisions and follow-on actions are recorded, communicated and actioned as appropriate, alongside supporting team members with EDI initiatives, including the Society’s EDI Community, the 2026 online EDI Symposium, Society involvement in the 2027 Minoritised Life Scientists Future Forum and organisational mentoring schemes.

The post-holder will support with administration and management for various Committees by compiling and preparing agendas and associated papers before each meeting, preparing Chair Notes and producing accurate minutes of meeting within the agreed timelines. You will also act as a liaison between the Society/PPL and Committee members on practical and logistical matters, such as supporting with expenses, as required.

The role will provide administrative support for the Nominations process and success planning, including Committee Chair, Trustee and Director inductions, along with drafting and reviewing policy documents and terms of reference. In addition, providing support on EDI initiatives with the wider team on the EDI Toolkit management.

Suitable candidates will have experience in Committee work, with excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with a variety of stakeholders. The successful candidate will also be able to present information in a concise report format, with strong attention to detail, while being able to work flexibly to manage competing demands as required.

Job Title: Partnership Events Coordinator (Inspiring the Future)

Purpose: This is a fantastic opportunity to take on the role of Partnership Events Coordinator for Education and Employers on the internationally recognised Inspiring the Future programme. The Charity aims to ensure that all young people have the inspiration, motivation, knowledge, skills and opportunities they need to help them achieve their potential.

This key post is part of the Partnerships Team with responsibility for supporting the team to deliver various showcase virtual and face-to-face events and activities involving a diverse range of volunteers from the world of work. Remuneration: £27k per annum

Job Purpose:
Reporting to the Head of Partnership Delivery and working closely with colleagues in the Partnerships Team, the Partnership Events Coordinator is responsible for working closely with volunteers and school staff to support successful delivery of interactive activities aimed at schools and young people under key funded projects for the charity’s Inspiring the Future and Primary Futures programmes. These programmes leverage technology to raise the aspirations and broaden the horizons of children and young people by connecting them to a huge range of volunteers from the world of work via career related learning activities.

The Partnerships team are responsible for relationship management of the key corporate and charity partners for the charity’s Inspiring the Future and Primary Futures programmes. Partners cover a range of sectors and employment areas and our employer partnerships provide partners employees with the opportunity to engage with schools and reach many children and young people across the UK, both virtually and in-person.

This role will be split between supporting organisation of activities related to our corporate partners and delivering activities to schools across parts of the country. There is opportunity to interface directly with children and young people from both secondary and primary schools. through facilitating virtual and in person interactive activities with volunteers.

The Partnership Events Coordinator will be an integral member of the Partnerships Team as well as working closely with the wider Inspiring the Future team. The role will help coordinate and deliver engaging activities across a diverse portfolio of partnerships such as Bank of America, Amazon, Tritax Big Box, Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust, Maritime UK, CIPD and the ERA Foundation.

Key Accountabilities:

Enquiries management and administrative support across the programme team

Delivery

• Recruiting and engaging schools according to the geographic or sector focus of a funded partnership
• Supporting the engagement of employers and volunteers in special activities within funded projects.
• Facilitating interactive virtual and face to face activities to connect pupils with volunteers through themed sessions, Q&A or job guessing-game format.
• Contributing to the successful delivery of a funded project with the ERA Foundation, supporting the wider team to plan, coordinate and deliver activities including volunteer recruitment, development of resources, and outreach and engagement with schools and teachers.

Job Description 

Post: JUMP Project Coordinator

Salary: £30,000 (pro-rata/3 days a week)

Location: Brighton and Hove Jewish Community Centre (BNJC)

About the role 

HIAS+JCORE supports refugees and asylum seekers, led by Jewish values. Our work is driven by the belief that the Jewish community should play an active part in building a society in which Refugees are able to live in dignity where the UK is a welcoming place free from racism. 

Our organisation came into this form through the joining of operations between two organisations: the UK-based JCORE (Jewish Council for Racial Equality) and HIAS, a global humanitarian aid and advocacy organisation. HIAS+JCORE is inspired by Jewish values and history to support those who are displaced, no matter their background. 

JUMP is a London-based befriending project for young asylum seekers and refugees who have been separated from their families. The three primary ways in which JUMP supports young people are befriending, casework and community. 

We are currently supporting 30 pairs through our London project and have built a Brighton branch of this project, supporting up to 10 pairs so far.

We are looking for a self-starting team member who will help coordinate and continue to build this valuable project in Brighton. You’ll be responsible for the befriending pairs and undertake tasks such as develop and maintain relationships with partner organisations, manage referrals for young people, recruit volunteer befrienders, and setting-up and sustaining pairs. This includes leading an initial training day. 

Contact with befrienders is through monthly reporting, and bi-annual supervision (initially after three months for new befrienders); alongside ad-hoc communication on safeguarding or other urgent matters. Contact with young people is more regular and varies depending on their casework support needs. 

Community events take place from time to time and offer a space for all young people and volunteers to come together and celebrate the work they are doing on JUMP. You will need to attend these events, and liaise with your cohort of befriending pairs to ensure everyone has the correct information. 

JUMP also has Hardship Fund (HSF) available to young people who need financial support with travel, clothing, food vouchers, and phone contracts.. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

Supporting the running of our JUMP project in Brighton, and overseeing and supporting up to 15 pairs, by: 

Supporting young people and the JUMP Community 

• Managing a caseload of young people; 

• Offering casework support (e.g., related to housing, education; day-to-day needs; arranging legal intervention etc.); 

• Where necessary arranging and attending appointments with the young person (GP, Home Office, Job Centre, and Legal appointments); 

• Signposting young people to available support and intervening where necessary. 

• Assisting in the planning and organising of group trips and events every 2- 3 months; 

• Conducting initial assessments with young people to understand their needs, and once paired with a volunteer, hosting befriending initial meetings; 

• Facilitating Hardship Fund payments to young people, including applications and approvals. 

Supervising and supporting volunteers 

• Organising and delivering JUMP core training to new and existing befrienders; 

• Recruiting, interviewing and onboarding new befrienders; 

• Supporting befriending volunteers through regular supervisions, meetings, emails and phone calls; 

• Responding to applications from new volunteers and actively recruiting volunteers as required; 

• Ensuring that volunteers uphold JUMP’s policies and boundaries for 

befriending; 

• Responding promptly to safeguarding concerns raised by volunteers. 

Publicising JUMP, and engaging with key stakeholders 

• Publicising the project to existing and potential referral agencies working with young asylum seekers and refugees who have been separated from their families; 

• Establishing and maintaining excellent close working relationships with referral organisations; 

• Representing HIAS+JCORE and JUMP in the refugee sector as required, for example at the Refugee and Migrant Forum meetings.. 

Project monitoring, evaluation and record keeping 

• Working with experts and the Frontline Support Manager on supporting the project and its evaluation; 

• Keeping accurate records in the JUMP database, including for safeguarding and impact evaluation purposes. 

ABOUT YOU 

• Ability to support, develop rapport and trust with, and motivate both young people and volunteers from a range of backgrounds and ages in challenging circumstances, including the ability to facilitate and engage in cross cultural communication; 

• Knowledge of issues facing separated asylum seeking and refugee children and young people, and the rights and entitlements of ‘Looked After’ children and young people; 

• Understanding of the current context surrounding immigration, asylum and welfare issues facing children and young people in the UK today;
