Business Director / Manager
Headway Cardiff and South East Wales
£36,000–£45,000 · Full time or part time considered, up to 37 hrs/week · Hybrid — University Hospital Llandough
About the role
We're looking for someone to run all the vital behind-the-scenes work that makes it possible for our services staff and volunteers to provide direct support to our service users. We'd be looking to you to make sure our centre is a safe and pleasant environment for everyone who uses it, that staff have the resources they need and systems in place to focus on what matters most, and that the finances are in place and properly accounted for to make everything possible. In the first instance, you wouldn't do this on your own. You'd become the third member of our management team. The CEO would support you and enable you to grow into the role so she can step back from the internal doing to do more of the overseeing, developing and external relationship building.
We don't expect you to come with all the experience already in place. What matters most is the ability to learn quickly, spot ways to improve and innovate, think critically and strategically, research independently, and make good decisions — including supporting service staff through challenging situations when the other managers aren't around.
Crucially, this role doesn't have a fixed ceiling. We're deliberately keeping it open rather than narrowly defined, because we want someone who can grow with us — someone who starts by taking real ownership of finance and operations, earns trust quickly, and is given more as they prove themselves. We're looking for someone who could realistically develop into the CEO role over the next 7–10 years.
What we're looking for
- A degree, or an equivalent professional qualification
- Genuinely strong Excel skills — a real, confident grip on numbers, percentages and detail
- Some real budget experience — ideally you've helped put a budget together for a funder, grant application or department, and reported back on how it's tracking
- Real spark, drive and ambition to develop, ideally with an eye on a much bigger role in the years ahead
- Comfortable holding responsibility — able to handle confidential information sensitively, work well under pressure, and make a call on the spot
- Most importantly, to care and believe in our mission
Bonus, not essential: payroll experience (genuinely trainable), Xero or similar accounting platform experience, line management experience, IT/procurement contract experience, HR administration, health & safety or data protection (DPO) background, charity or voluntary sector background, Welsh language skills.
Why join us
- A broad, trust-based role with a genuine, stated path to leadership — not a narrow finance job with a fixed ceiling
- A very supportive, committed and caring staff team
