Purpose of the Role:
To provide personalised support and companionship to ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students at the Baytree Centre, fostering their English language skills, understanding of life in the UK, and integration into the community. By engaging in one-to-one interactions and creating a welcoming environment, the role contributes to the social inclusion and well-being of participants from diverse backgrounds.
Main Responsibilities:
- Provide tailored one-to-one support to ESOL students, focusing on conversation skills and knowledge of life in the UK.
- Share insights about cultural aspects and community resources to support integration.
- Create a friendly and supportive atmosphere that reduces feelings of isolation.
- Offer basic information and assistance to help access services and navigate resources.
- Maintain consistent attendance and communication with the paired student.
- Adhere to Baytree Centre policies and procedures.
Skills and Qualities Required:
- Sufficient English to engage effectively in one-to-one conversations.
- Empathy, patience, and cultural sensitivity.
- Good interpersonal and listening skills.
- Flexible and adaptable to varying schedules and needs.
- Reliable, punctual, and committed to the agreed schedule.
- Interest in community support, integration, and language development.
Commitment:
- 1 hour per week, Monday to Thursday between 9am and 3pm (exact day and time subject to each person’s availability).
- Minimum commitment of 2 terms for continuity and effectiveness.
