We are seeking a Treasurer/Trustee for The Historic Towns Trust, an educational charity that focuses on inspiring future generations to understand, appreciate and preserve their urban heritage. The Trust works in partnership with local historians, geographers and archaeologists to publish historical maps and atlases that give everyone a sense of belonging and custodianship.  Our unique multi-layer mapping techniques reveal a new way to visualise the complex development of Britain’s towns, enabling us to better analyse the impact of events and communities over time. We use our research to develop teaching materials for schools and to engage the public with free talks, empowering them with the knowledge and confidence to influence future decisions about their built environments.

Among our Trustees we have some of the leading academics in the fields of urban history and archaeology, architects, and business people, who share a passion for maps and history.  While the organisation has no central office and Trustees are spread across Britain, we meet frequently, usually but not exclusively in London.

The Trust has expanded significantly in recent years, increasing the number of maps and atlases we produce and developing educational and community outreach programmes to increase the impact of each map for the town it serves. The number and value of transactions we undertake (raising funds for projects, selling maps, taking on our first employee) has grown considerably and we are seeking a new Trustee to fill the role of Treasurer, helping us to re-shape the organisation for the future.

The Role

The Historic Towns Trust has the following financial activities

1. Income from our endowment

2. Income from sale of maps and atlases directly, through our website and through third party distributors

3. Income from grants and donations to HTT towards core activities

4. Holding of money raised for individual atlas and map projects

5. Expenditure on administration

6. Quarterly VAT filing

7. GiftAid collection and accounting

8. Annual audit

Currently three sub-committees (Projects, Communications and Resources) report to an Executive Sub-Committee (“ESC”) that reports to the Board of Trustees.  Each of these meets quarterly, with two Board meeting held in person in June and December, usually in London.

In the light of the recent growth in activities we are reviewing our operating structure.  This may include

· A new Educational sub-committee

· Splitting Resources between Administration and Sales/Marketing

· Recruitment of a paid part-time book-keeper

· Recruitment of an office administrator

The Treasurer will sit on ESC and will be responsible for the financial administration of the Trust and its reporting obligations to HMRC and the Charities Commission.  They will report to the Board on the financial position of the Trust on a quarterly basis, and lead deliberations on major investments. They will lead the audit.

As a Trustee they will have the opportunity to be engaged in our atlas and map activities, attending events and launches and contributing in any other way to the development of the Trust.

The Candidate

We are looking for an experienced, preferably qualified, accountant who has a passion for cartography, for urban history and for education.

We’re looking for friendly, empathetic volunteers to join us, who have strong interpersonal skills and are able to navigate digital systems. Whether you’re a confident communicator who wants to help survivors or a reliable and honest volunteer looking to build your administration and inputting skills, we’d love to have you on board as a SPOC Administration Volunteer!

Administration Volunteers will volunteer within the BCWA SPOC Team, who provide key administrative support to all BCWA services. Volunteers will assist in the smooth running of SPOC; they will access and input case data, collaborating with SPOC staff to ensure cases are allocated correctly. They will also have the opportunity to answer phone calls and enquiries, once they become confident in their role.  The SPOC team is a busy, sometimes high-pressure environment – our volunteers are integral at our busiest times of the year to ensure our clients and services get the support they need.

Volunteering with our SPOC team as an administrator might look like:

• Inputting data into the BCWA case management system.
• Consulting with our SPOC staff to ensure correct allocations.
• Reading referral information and identifying and establishing types of abuse.
• Future opportunities to answer enquiries and phone calls once you have an established knowledge of BCWA services and feel comfortable doing so.
• Being an advocate for BCWA!

As a BCWA SPOC Volunteer, you’ll get:

We have an opportunity for a volunteer based in our Salisbury office to support our busy supporter care/membership team. You will help the team to ensure our members and supporters receive the highest standards of care and an excellent experience.

What you will be doing

This dynamic opportunity could involve anything from answering supporter queries and letter stuffing, to updating supporter records, filing and researching.

Location – This role is based at Plantlife Head Office in Salisbury, Wiltshire, so we are looking for a volunteer who is based in or around Salisbury. Ideally, we would prefer someone who lives in close proximity to our office.

Time commitment – We are looking for someone who can volunteer one day per week with us in our Salisbury office, aiming to give 5 hours or more (Wednesday or Thursday).

1. Recruiting and selecting potential volunteers, acting as an ambassador for Plateful Café

2. Inducting volunteers into suitable roles based on their interests, experience and expectations and the charity's needs

3. Providing an initial point of contact with the charity and ensuring volunteers maintain a positive and confident approach

4. Supporting the volunteer team to ensure the provision of relevant experience, training and development opportunities as well as supervision and support

5. Maintaining an up-to-date database in order to monitor volunteer progress and to record and celebrate their contributions

6 Contributing to newsletter and reports in order to maintain and develop the profile of Plateful Café

7. Good understanding of safeguarding to keep both employees and volunteers safe and protected. 

8. Good management skills and the ability to organise on behalf of others.

9. Help new volunteers when they are stuck with certain tasks

10. You will need to effectively strategise a plan for other volunteers, make volunteer rotas and stay on top of volunteering admin and prioritise important tasks.

A bit about this role...

Every penny counts when it comes to improving the lives of the thousands of cats and kittens across the UK that need our help each year. Our Collection Box Volunteers help us raise vital funds by collecting and distributing collection boxes in their local area. Making a difference can mean as little as raising 20p, which is enough to feed one cat in our care for a day, to £150 which is the average cost of a cat in our care.

What can I expect to be doing?

As a flexible role, you have the choice to be involved in the following:

• Researching local shops, pubs and businesses to place Collection Boxes
• Delivering Collection Boxes to locations
• Recording donations and thanking local businesses and supporters
• Collecting and replacing Collection boxes when they're full
• Sharing your passion for cat welfare and promoting the work of Cats Protection

What we need from you

This is a highly flexible role, and you can choose how you’d like to get involved. Opportunities include:

• Face-to-face fundraising – organising or helping at fundraising events, running supermarket collections and fundraising stands, and monitoring collection tins
• Online fundraising – setting up online appeals and writing engaging cat case studies to maximise donations
• Marketing and promotion – spreading the word about fundraising activities via social media and local press
• Administration – processing donations, sorting and recording donated goods, and completing Gift Aid paperwork
• Championing our work – helping to develop new fundraising ideas and increasing community engagement
• Photography – capturing images of cats in care, cats we’re helping, fundraising events, and all things Cats Protection

Time commitment

This role is flexible and designed to fit around your other commitments. You’ll be part of a friendly team raising vital funds — and having fun along the way.
